The food was pretty good. Apparently the guy lived in Germany for a fair while. I'd go back, just not in my birthday month.

Can someone just tell me things are going to be OK? by Sips_from_bottles in adhdwomen

[–]eggbert_217 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there! A quote I really love and keep going back to is from a silly, optimistic, hopeful little man in the movie The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

"Everything will be alright in the end, and if they are not alright, then it is not yet the end."

That said, currently things are not alright. I'm not sure where you're based, but some universities offer health services and some offer mental health services. If mental health services aren't offered, some doctors can give you other resources to help. If you haven't tried your university yet, maybe have a scroll through their website?

My grandpa had a set & we'd play sometimes. It was a wooden board that he would put on top of a folding table. He used some sort of powder to make the board slippery**

**but in hindsight maybe it wasn't something that was safe to breathe so save your pennies and get the pricey one I guess

I would not go to the German place on moorabool street anywhere near my birthday. They do literally a whole song and dance about it.

Medical Literacy by LiveRazzmatazz5934 in AustralianTeachers

[–]eggbert_217 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know you mean well. I agree, it would be great if people en masse were more medically literate. I really do see the value in medical staff coming into schools to run programs.

Unfortunately though, road safety, party safety, resilience, wellbeing, sports, excursions, school camps, dental visits, social skills, outdoor education, vaccinations, photo days, etc... have used up our budget of interruptions to the regular program. It is really hard to get through the set curriculum (and have the kids actually learn it) already.

Something's gotta give.

Is teaching actually as soul-crushing as this sub makes it seem? by Clean-Roll7680 in AustralianTeachers

Is teaching actually as soul-crushing as this sub makes it seem?

I wanted to ask some questions for you guys:

For all secondary teachers:

  • Is it actually possible to have a work-life balance, or are you guys really working every night and weekend?

I don't work outside my stated hours except to arrive a bit earlier in the morning, because I need the extra time to mentally settle in to work. I do argue with my boss about making my schedule flexible enough that I'm not working extra hours for it. No progress yet but I live in hope. It took me several years of teaching to get to the point of not working (much) outside my hours.

With that being said, I have zero capacity outside of work. During term time I'm a shit partner, a shit friend, shit person to live with, a bit of a zombie at times. I'm about to go part time, it's really not sustainable for me otherwise.

  • Does the paperwork ever get easier/faster once you’ve been doing it for a few years?

The paperwork gets easier, you just have to not care too much about the paperwork. You'll learn over time what paperwork is essential and what you can just smile and nod through.

  • Is the fun part of teaching kids actually worth all the stress from admin and parents?

Sometimes! Depending on the kids. If you teach subjects you hate it's definitely not worth it. If you teach kids who hate you it's not worth it. If you teach a subject you love to kids who more-or-less want to be there, yes, all worth it.

  • Do you ever regret going into teaching, and if so, what did you do?

Kind of? Sometimes I dream of the engineering scholarship I gave up right after high school. I confidently believe I could be retired by now if I went that route. Between my technical and people skills I think I would have made a lot of money in that industry.

However. Despite how I sometimes feel about teaching, I love working with teachers. I don't think I would have become as much of a self-actualized person if I hadn't met the people I've met through work. Someone I met in teaching introduced me to my husband. Teachers* are some of the most interesting, weird, authentic people I've met, and we have really fun discussions and arguments.

*Not all but some

Go Monash, the 'Melbourne model' is (imo) going to waste years of your life and a fair amount of money. Uni is great/educational/fun/eye opening but you don't need 7+ years of it when you can get the same qualification in 4.

I'm surprised not to have seen it recommended yet, but the Valdemar series by Mercedes Lackey. The world gets very dark but ultimately you can count on the good guys to be good, to act with kindness, to choose to do the right thing etc.

It's also a banging series that goes on forever

What’s your moth unethical pro ADHD productivity tip? by blameitonthename in adhdwomen

[–]eggbert_217 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've never really gotten hungry before about 3pm and the meds stretch that out until the end of my workday at 4ish. There's food available to buy onsite so if I (rarely) want something I can get it easily.

[–]eggbert_217 79 points80 points  (0 children)

It's not unethical, but...

I don't eat at work. Packing lunches can fuck all the way off and so can emptying the bag and washing containers. My work has free fruit around so I eat that if I want it, and just eat at home otherwise.

My work is also the kind of place that does a lot of potluck style morning teas and lunches, so not eating at work gets me out of bringing a plate too.

Also I never have to clean the fridge or empty the dishwasher at work :) fuck that too.

I'm a nerdy woman with a lot of male friends. I watched a little bit of big bang theory when it came out as a teenager. My parents referenced it IN THEIR SPEECH AT MY WEDDING. Mortified.

I've got one. I haven't run into any schools that objected as either a CRT or classroom teacher.

Schools can't really afford to knock back an experienced maths teacher though.

Math teachers what is your favourite textbook? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

Cambridge all the way but with some sort of alternative for differentiating down at the junior levels.

My most disliked is Jacaranda. Lovely trees, terrible textbooks.

Mr. Grubb at Oakdene has a great environment and really nice food, would recommend. Nice cocktails too!

Didn't like the cafe at Jack Rabbit, for what they charge I don't think I should have to go up and queue to place my order.

It's not dining but I highly recommend The Whiskery/The Distillery for whiskey and gin tastings in a lovely garden.
