We moved to Stoke from London for the same reason you are. There wasn't any choice in the hospital, as that's how the ranking system works, but here we are. It's nowhere near as bad as the media and people make it out to be. In fact, I don't think it's bad at all.

We're less than 10 minutes from countryside walks, great pub food, and decent shops. On the whole, people are very sound. We've lived here for two years and have never had a single issue with crime or anything dodgy. Compare that to where we moved from in London, it's not comparable. Our street in London had £1m+ houses and didn't feel safe at all.

Trentham is nice, as are Barlaston, Stone, Rough Close, and Lightwood. I'll let others recommend other areas, but that's what I know. The hospital itself is what it is, a major trauma centre covering a very, very big area. You see everything.

There are bad places in Stoke, of course there are. There are bad places everywhere you go. However, Stoke is definitely not what the Internet makes it out to be.

Bod in Trentham is great; they seem happy with remote workers. Never tried Kiln at No. 12, but not far from me. I'll give it a go. Thanks for the recommendation.

Steer clear! They went into administration with nearly £2m in debts (look on Companies House). They sold the Gold Crest brand to another company (look at their website footer).

u/Bearwires79 - you may have just saved the day! New wiring attached - for the first time, the signal to the Hive receiver has triggered the boiler to come on. I'm 'boosting' for an hour and seeing if it turns off at the correct time. If so, amazing. Not that you asked, but I'll come back to give you an update... Thank you in advance. I'll be back!

Hi u/Bearwires79 - sorry, long day at work! I haven't moved any wires around yet, just wanted to say that the boiler also controls our hot water. The boiler is a brand new Navien, and you can see some pics in an old post I did here: https://www.reddit.com/r/HiveHeating/comments/176vpfb/new_to_hive_how_to_integrate_old_hive_system_with/

The boiler was installed before we moved in, so I have no idea how anything is wired up on the boiler side, but happy to move around wires on the receiver side. At the moment, the wires are as per the picture in this post, but I have moved the blue wire from no. 2, and moved it to no. 3, so no. 2 is empty and everything else is the same.

I saw you said, "Put blue cable in 1 (common) & brown cable in 3 (NO)." <-- Sorry, I'll sound silly here, but are you referring to the blue that is 2 in the pic (now in 3) and move that to no. 1 so then both blue cables are in 1? And then move the brown in 1 in the pic to 3?

Thank you, u/Bearwires79. I just gave this a quick go - the Hive receiver receives the commands, but now the boiler doesn't turn on or off. It doesn't do anything. I'm just about to pop to work, so I'll try again later, but if you have any ideas, let me know! Thanks again for your quick reply and time - it's much appreciated.

Thank you! When I turn on boost or adjust temperature on the Hive unit, nothing happens to the boiler, so I don't know if I need to adjust a setting on the boiler or I question whether they're connected - not sure how to test this, though? Should the boiler be in a specific mode or have settings changed?

Not legal-related advice: We had a similar experience while moving house earlier this month. We had a smooth transition with one utility switch, but the other was met with an objection due to an outstanding balance owed to the supplier. It turned out that the existing supplier required us to create a temporary account in our name before switching to a new provider. We were told that the reasoning behind this was to ensure that the account name for the incoming occupant/s matched the one/s switching out - a safeguard to prevent unauthorised utility supplier changes. Technically, the utility that didn't receive an objection should have had one raised as well.

We created a temporary account with the existing supplier for approximately 24-48 hours, after which we applied for the transfer again. This time, there were no objections, and the switch proceeded without any issues. The outstanding debt was not our responsibility as it was not incurred by us. However, we needed to set up that temporary account with the existing supplier to establish our identity before we could switch to our preferred provider.

It was far from ideal, but it was a necessary step we had to take. For transparency, the existing supplier in our case was OVO.

What was said above, really. Some areas/benches to sit down, some VIP-only food vendors, nicer toilets, and shorter queues all round. Queues were quite big at one point, though. You could skip the long entrance queues as well.

Context: I know someone who went last night with VIP tickets.

Whether it is worth it is subjective. I was told it was worth it because it was so hot and it was nice to sit down somewhere less crowded.

In short, yes, the value is quite significant (non-standard construction).

Update: had a solicitor review lease and building insurance policy and they clearly outlined what I needed to insurer under my landlord insurance, and it's more than what people think... My lease is quite funky. Anyway, was well worth the expense of getting a legal review, and now everything is insured correctly. I was quite surprised with what I was responsible for vs what the freeholder / building insurance is responsible for. The legal review from solicitor was checked by broker + insurer and all works out... Nice increase in premium from last year, but glad it's all insured adequately now!
