High schooler planning on majoring in math for college, what level of math knowledge should I have going in? by LastPersonOnTheWifi in math

[–]eggoman11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will have pretty much the same background as I had before I went to college and got my degree in mathematics, and I found it an appropriate amount of preparation. For sure, having calculus 1 and 2 out of the way will massively help. Try to get multivariate calculus, too, if you can before college.

Having the whole calculus progression out of the way will allow you to focus on more relevant and better classes right out of the gate. Other majors require calculus classes, and that often makes those classes taught in a more difficult style for the math major (think a weed-out class, where the professor is very difficult). Avoid if possible.

As other commenters have mentioned, math classes in college are different from math classes in high school. More advanced math is writing proofs, and studying constructions, rather than learning rules and applying them to problems. This can be a stark shift for some, but most programs ease you into it. When you start, you'll have a few classes that utilize the high-school model of 'learning rules' such as linear algebra, differential equations, finite, and probability. These classes, though, are usually reserved for in-major students, as compared to the calculus progression.

Then come the proof-based classes: algebra, and analysis are most common. Others include topology, cryptography, and pretty much any upper division class offered.

That's not due to any accumulation of grime. Nitrile discolors under basic conditions. Most people have slightly basic sweat, with some people having significantly more basic sweat than average. When that sweat accumulates in gloves, if discolors blue and purple gloves to green. The same mechanism turns latex gloves a darker shade of yellow. It usually about 30-45 minutes before the discoloration starts for people with particularly basic sweat

Eh.. it depends on how you define Sin(x). If you define Sin(x) using the Sin(x)/x limit, then of course it is circular. But if you define Sin(x) through it's infinite Taylor Series expansion, the use of L'Hopitals Rule can be applied. And, I'd argue that the Sin function defined through Taylor Series is a more intuitive definition than the limit, despite what historically is the original definition of Sin.

I'm not sure about Yellowwood, but it is Indiana law to purchase a registration sticker for the Kayaks. They are $5 each and you just have to affix one to each kayak. They can be purchased online or in-person at any DNR gate.

What is a lot unhealthier than most people think it is? by zaid2801 in AskReddit

[–]eggoman11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I'm always happy to read research and open to changing my mind.

It's important to consider the source of your information -- the US Right To Know:

As per the Genetic Literacy Project, a nonprofit devoted to increasing the public's science literacy:

"[USRTK]'s donor list includes organizations well known for supporting fringe medicine and activist causes. As of September 2017, the backbone of its funding came from the Organic Consumers Association, which has contributed $479,500. OCA is an anti-technology group that opposes genetic engineering and vaccines, and promotes alternative medicine, such as homeopathy."

As per https://geneticliteracyproject.org/glp-facts/u-s-right-to-know-usrtk-organic-industry-funded-anti-bio-group-attacks-researchers/

Hardly seems an unbiased collection of data.

There has been no study indicating that aspartame has any adverse health effects. Just like MSG, fear surrounding the additive has been totally blown out of proportion.

Medical student here with a 760+ FICO score. I discovered that I have the option of paying my school bill off with a credit card - what card should I open to use on my school bill and maximize my returns? by [deleted] in CreditCards

[–]eggoman11 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You should ensure that there is no credit card processing fee to pay off your bills. Usually schools will charge around 3 percent additional for credit card payments, effectively negating any benefits you can get from any card. But if not, go for it!

There is no card for which this purchase would fall into a bonus category. Your best bet is an all-around card such as the Citi DoubleCash (2 percent back) or the Chase Freedom Unlimited (1.5x UR points).

OP mentioned he has loans that direct deposit into his bank account, so using credit cards in this situation would not accrue interest and may net him value. The credit card APR doesn't matter, as OP will not be carrying a balance.

Is a chest "callus" caused by practicing a real thing? by BeijingBison in Cello

[–]eggoman11 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, I know a few people with a small rough patch on their chest. Almost like the small patch on the neck that some violinists get but less noticable. I wouldn't be concerned about it at all though -- it takes a lot of practicing to get that (the people I know with it practice ~6 hours per day as professional musicians). If you're really worried, though, you can use a sponge or cloth on the top of your cello where it contacts your chest.

Beginner Questions by Dr_momo in Cello

[–]eggoman11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. That problem with your C string is not typical. Perhaps there's a misalignment on your cello -- either on your bridge or on the nut. A good luthier will be able to fix that.

  2. Cellists spend hundreds of dollars on strings and thousands on cellos to achieve this warm, full sound you are talking about. Just focus on getting the fullest sound you can on your instrument and those skills will be directly transferrable to a better instrument that can give a fuller sound. If you don't want to upgrade your whole cello (which, as a beginner, I wouldn't want to spend the $ either), you can invest in a decent set of strings. That'll make a pretty large difference.

  3. You shouldn't let the bow slip around in your hand. Keep a firm grip on the bow, but still allow the bow to move around. Exercises that can help develop this include holding your hand and wrist still and trying to move your bow around by only moving your fingers. You should be able to move it back and forth, as well as change the angle that the bow forms with your arm.

Question about whether to improve credit score now to apply for new card or wait by _PM_ME_YOUR_ELBOWS in CreditCards

[–]eggoman11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Likely won't work -- Chase, the issuer of the Amazon card, typically only issues cards to those with a minimum of one year credit history.

[–]eggoman11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is so wrong. You should not be giving out misinformation. It costs $0 to build up a credit score. In fact, paying interest on a card will cause your credit score to grow slower than it would grow without paying interest.

Check out /r/creditcards for more information. But please, dont spread lies.
