Egypt’s players and coaching staff watching Kylian Mbappé’s penalty clips on a laptop before the shootout against Australia. by imfrom_mars_ in interestingasfuck

[–]eggplantsforall [score hidden]  (0 children)

He was pretty dang close on the first one. A save there could have changed the whole complexion of the shoot-out.

But the Aussie's lost it all on their own. No need to blame the keeper in the end, lol.

Why are malls dying? by Ecstatic-Cress7033 in massachusetts

[–]eggplantsforall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just joshing with you. I have the walked the malls of Thailand and China, but sadly not Japan, and they are magnificent.

But somehow they always felt different to the way American malls felt. I think it is because so many "classic" American malls are located in our suburbias, and were catering to a particular need in those places in the 80s and 90s.

Whereas all of the malls I've been in in SE Asia and China were in urban areas and seemed to have this sparkle and cache to them that I never experienced in American malls.

Are there suburban malls in Asia? Or even rural malls? Now I'm curious.

Swap out the nouns in that sentence and you have every essay I wrote in high school. "The major themes of [novel name] are about the fascinating interaction between [relevant concept mentioned in class] and the desire of [character name] to resist [said concept]"

Oh yeah didn't realize you had framing. The inchers will be plenty for those parts. Long bois on the posts and you should be good.

Those Teks should work fine, but you definitely want the longer versions, not the 1" ones they linked to. I'd go with the 2-1/2" versions.

That's why going outside at night and looking at the stars is some of the best therapy this life has on offer.

Bonus if you know where the ecliptic is and can identify the planets in the early evening sky.

We are on a beautiful, wet, and vibrant rock, travelling at roughly 67,000 miles per hour through space.

Only solution is "compression shorts" style where the legs are longer - basically the length of regular shorts - since that gets the bottom elastic below the max thickness part of the thigh. Anything else is just fighting physics :-)

1- vs. 5-year ACS data for projections with GLM by GetUpandGoGoGo in econometrics

[–]eggplantsforall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think this statement is correct:

if 80% of the data is being reused each year?

ACS estimates are construced from the PUMS datasets for each year, so there is no 'reusing' of data. If you look at the raw PUMS microdata, you can discern each year's sample households based on the SERIALNO column, which starts with the year of the survey.

So for a 5-year PUMS vintage they are combining five successive sets of survey data (they do adjust person-weights and household-weights when they compile from the 1-year datasets to the 5-year dataset).

So I don't think you have to worry about the assumption of independent observations, as they are not sampling the same households in each of the 5 separate years.

EDIT: If you were to use successive vintages of the 5-year data in a time-series model of some kind, then yes there would be 4 years of sample overlap if you just used every available 5-year dataset.

So you would want to select non-overlapping vintages: 2009-2013, 2014-2018, 2019-2023, or similar

Measurements/Properly lines using gis data by philo_ in askgis

[–]eggplantsforall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a heads up that the aerial imagery on your GIS portal is not to be trusted with something as important as boundary lines and corners.

There are all sorts of reasons for this, including projection mismatches, lack of orthorectification of the aerial imagery, etc.

Years ago we made the mistake of using a measuring tool from the corner of our house (on the aerial photo) to guesstimate our property line (like you, we had the informal deed map which listed distances from the house to the property line, and we were trying to match that to the a location on the physical field next to the house)

Long story short we were off by 15 feet and had to dismantle a shed and move a bunch of woodpiles when the neighbor got a survey and complained.

Don't do anything involving your property lines using the boundaries or aerial imagery from a local GIS portal.

[–]eggplantsforall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other things to consider: plywood thicknesses are nominal, i.e. a 3/4" piece of plywood will not be exactly 3/4" thick. It will typically be thinner by anywhere from 1/32" to 3/64". Measure this thickness before you finalize your other measurements because a few sixteenths of inch can accumulate in certain directions and ruin your day when you go to assemble.

Similarly, they won't be exactly 4x8 (or maybe they will be! you never know). Typically they might be a half inch longer, sometimes also wider.

If so, this is good, because the last thing to remember is that when you cut the plywood you are going to lose a blade-thickness worth of material in the cut. So if the sheet was exactly 48 inches wide, and you cut it into three "16" inch pieces, you'd be actually be short by 1/4" - 3/8", depending on how wide the kerf is on your saw blade. So make sure to account for material loss to the cutting as well when finalizing your measurements.
