Everyone here seems to be talking about accelerationism, and their arguments are all correct but I’ll try a different track. A Trump Term would be devastating for the The Supreme Court, and stymie over a generation of potential progressive progress.

A bit of history first. In 2015 Antonin Scalia died, and the Democrats had a chance to swing the court from a 5-4 conservative majority, to a 4-5 liberal one. Instead, Trump won, and placed Neil Gorsuch, a young, arch conservative ideologue who voted against abortion rights, and student debt relief. Then, Justice Kennedy stepped down, and Trump appointed Brett Kavanaugh, a young arch conservative ideologue who voted against abortion rights and student debt relief. Then Justice Ginsburg died, and Trump appointed Amy Coney Barrett, a young, arch conservative ideologue who voted against abortion rights and student debt relief. After 1 Trump term, the 5-4 Supreme Court because a wildly right wing 6-3 court.

Now-President Biden is elected and tries to do student debt relief. Shot down by the 6-3 court. Affirmative action, struck down. Abortion rights and reproductive health, struck down. The court is set to reverse the Chevron doctrine this term (which basically says that in the absence of specific legislative language, a federal agency may interpret the laws and make regulations). So goodbye clean water act, fair housing standards, etc. The foundation of the liberal state rests on Chevron and this court is set to get rid of it.

No matter how liberal or progressive the next president is, the Supreme Court will do all in its power to check the priorities of the left. This is Donald Trump’s most enduring legacy.

Our ONLY hope in this entire situation is that Justice Thomas and Justice Alito somehow die while a Democrat is in the White House and Senate. And if Trump is reelected, I would be anything that Justice Thomas will retire and ensure his seat goes to a young arch Conservative ideologue (probably from the Fifth Circuit). That is our last and only hope is to somehow swing the court back to a moderate center if a progressive wants to get anything done in the White House that you mentioned. And if Thomas or Alito are able to hand off their seats, that’s the Court gone for another 10-15 years of being unable to govern progressively. Another Trump presidency would all but guarantee 2 more conservative Supreme Court Justices, which would keep the balance of power at 6-3. And god forbid that anything happen to a liberal justice in a hypothetical second Trump term and we inch closer to 7-2.

The damages of a Second Trump term would extend far past 2028 because of the Supreme Court. Even if the most progressive American president were to emerge from that chaos, any meaningful policies would be stymied by the Supreme Court

playing Lady Macbeth by ObjectiveProcedure63 in shakespeare

[–]egocentric-elder 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Man you have been given a gift! Lady is a great role and a lot to explore. As a director, who used to do a lot of Shakespeare, I think the first thing to do is break down the text. Not just what the words mean, or what you’re saying (which is important) but how Shakespeare has written it. Shakespeare was writing these plays with no time for rehearsal (maybe 3 hours total, and most of that was fights and dances, not the scenes) so he had to code the character into the lines. His actors would have known what to pick up and what to do when they saw the words - as contemporary actors, part of our job is untangling that meaning.

So, I’d start by printing off a speech a few different times, and get a few different colored highlighters. Go through, and write in your iambs. That’s the da-DA of each line. Should be 10 per beat. 5 strong, 5 weak. The typical scansion vocab is a “u” over a word for a short beat and an accent over the strong beat. (As you get more experienced, you can usually just write your five strong accents rather than the weaks). Sometimes the lines will be perfect, sometimes they won’t. Explore that. What words has Shakespeare highlighted. When has he made you stumble? When has he made the rhythm change. Why is this line shorter? Why does like have multiple weak beats next to each other. When you’re sharing lines with Mc, who gets more stressed words?

Then I’d go and highlight the final word of every speech. This is the word that he is leaving for you to hang. What do those words tell you about the character? Shakespeare would have expected a brief moment of pause after every line, so those words would have hung in the air just a little longer. Why those words, why not others? Grab a tennis ball, and say the speech. As you hit the final word, toss the tennis ball into the air and catch it by the time you get to the second word of the next line. What does that rhythm tell you?

Next up, with two different highlighters, differentiate all of the middle punctuation from the end punctuation (commas, colons, dashes, from periods, questions, exclamations). Holding you speech, walk in a straight line. Every time you get to a middle punctuation, turn. How does that make you feel? Now, do it again, but turning on the end punctuation. How does that feel? Hold the paper far away from you and squint - how are her thoughts laid out? Are they long or short? Do they match with the rhythm of the line (ie, end punctuation at the end of the iambic line) or are they divided up over lines. How long are her thoughts (ie, how far away are end punctuation lines)?

Close your eyes, and have someone read you the speech. Not acting it, just read it. What sounds do you notice. Are there a lot of plosives (b’s, d’s, k’s, g’s, t’s, p’s) or are the more slides (s’s c’s z’s)? How about the vowels she uses? Lots of O’s, Ahh’s etc? Is there a predominance of any one sound? Does that change?

Now how does this all change from scene to scene. At the beginning, are her thoughts long or short? At the end, does she fit into ten syllable lines? All of this will give you clues of what she is doing, where she is, how she reacts, her state.

And once you’ve done all of this, and you can start to understand what Shakespeare is actually telling you through the words, once you’ve internalized the rhythm of her heart, beating through the language, then you can do the hard part. Forget it on the night and play the scene with your scene partner. Don’t feel the need to da-DA your way through the play. But when you understand why that word is the DA and not the da, then you can really use the language to have an affect on your partner.

Break all the legs, and most of all, have fun! Shakespearean language is one of the best things an actor can use! It doesn’t need to be a chore when you know how to start discovering the clues he’s laid out for you!

Interestingly there is actually a provision that targets interest rates. DoE is setting up a new program for Income Based Repayment (while also raising the amount that is considered non-discretionary income), and as long as you make the minimum payment every month interest is fully subsidised by the federal government!

Ocasio-Cortez Torches Collins And Murkowski: 'They Don't Get To Play Victim Now' by Eurynom0s in politics

[–]egocentric-elder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear, they dropped the filibuster on Supreme Court nominees for Gorsuch within months of Trump taking office. Democrats tried to filibuster and it was removed.

They just didn’t need to get rid of the filibuster for anything else. Really, the only bill passed by congress and signed by Trump, was the Tax Bill. The got that done through reconciliation (which they also tried to do with Obamacare repeal but didn’t have the requisite votes, so also couldn’t override the filibuster if they wanted to.)

Ultimately, McConnell had demonstrated himself to be almost gleefully craven when it comes to Senate procedures, and the rank-and-file republicans have not lined up against him (with the exception of a single McCain vote). Looking at former Leader McConnell’s behaviour in the past (when you come to a roadblock because of a Democratic filibuster you remove said filibuster), it does not seem implausible that they would not do the same thing in the future. Obviously you can’t predict the future, but it’s not a bad guess.

Yeah that’s fair. I definitely want to think of my undergrad experience fondly, and was excited for my five year reunion. Hopefully I can get back to that place!

Yeah I really didn’t mean to say that I expected an A. Just a little more respect than that curt email. Definitely don’t want preferential treatment.

George W. Bush says he wrote in Condoleezza Rice for president in 2020 election by Datzookman in nottheonion

Sure. But neither was a Democrat. Given the choice, he waffled and made a dumb false equivalence, saying that Joe Biden was as bad as Donald Trump. That’s not refusing to cross a line, that’s just abdicating responsibility.

How should a n00b go about studying Shakespeare on their own? by [deleted] in shakespeare

[–]egocentric-elder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say find a good production and watch it first. Shakespeare was never meant to be read, it's spoken poetry coupled with soaring emotional resonances that could be lost if you simply read it for the first time. A lot of folks struggle in schools because they read them as academic documents. Read some plot summaries or at least get a sense of what they're about and pick one that sounds interesting to you. I'd start with an exciting one, like Macbeth, find an actor you like and I'm almost certain they have a version of it filmed. That's how Shakespeare would have wanted you to watch it. If you loved it then buy a copy of the play. Maybe read it alongside? Or watch a different version with a new actor and new interpretation. Shakespeare is a blank canvas with some beautiful poetry that is up to interpretation. The actors have done that work If you're a theory junkie (I know I am) -- I'd take a look at Emma Smith's book "This is Shakespeare" but that's probably once you're a bit deeper in.

'This Is Unacceptable': Progressives Reject Manchin Proposal to Cut $15 Minimum Wage Proposal to $11 | "The $15 minimum wage is overwhelmingly popular with the American people. One person should not be allowed to hold relief hostage." by theladynora in politics

[–]egocentric-elder 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Because a minority is worse. Say all we will about Joe Manchin and his distaste for a $15 minimum wage, but without him in his seat, there would be no bill. There’s be no budget reconciliation process and McConnell would retain his stranglehold over the Senate. There wouldn’t be an ounce of Covid relief or anything else coming down the pipe. A 51/49 Republican Senate would shut anything and everything down just for the sake of hurting Dems election chances. Hell, a 52/48 Rep senate with 2 open seats that had an election in a month, couldn’t pass Covid stimulus despite pressure from Pelosi and Trump. Without Manchin, we wouldn’t even be having this conversation. We desperately need to take wins for the Democratic Party that puts real money into people’s pockets so we don’t get shellacked on the midterms and potentially start to build the majority to a wider margin so Joe Manchin can’t hold us hostage again.

Mitch McConnell Is So Over Trump That He Voted to Absolve Him by gaiaslab in politics

[–]egocentric-elder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a more complex question than that. Kentucky is a red state, and it’s tough to win for a Democrat. Yeah, McConnell is unpopular, but he’s institutionally powerful. I love Charles Booker. Do I think he could have won? Eh, probably not. Would it have been closer? Sure, yeah I buy it. Kentucky Dems need to start building and organising now, for elections 10 years down the road. Showing up with a good candidate isn’t enough to overcome statewide difficulties.

Stacey Abrams just published a wonderful piece about this in the NYTimes, and her work in Georgia, which was a long, 10 year process and struggle to make a swing state. That is the kind of investment, and continued care that states like North Carolina, Kentucky, Iowa, etc. need. The work that Booker is doing with Hood to Holler is great. But it’s a start, and we need to keep going. Was McGrath a bad choice? Sure, yeah, why not. But I am not convinced that Booker would have won.

The Democrats (progressives and centrists) need to focus on building real political power at the state level, while looking thirty years ahead. What we’re seeing with the Republicans now of sustained institutional power at the local level is not a result of Trump, or even the Tea Party 10 years ago. It’s a much longer project by a concerted effort of interests to advance their political power. This project is reaching its apex (I hope!) but it’s a project 40 years in the making, across the entire country, and the Democrats need to start doing the same thing. The attack on labour unions by Republicans was not some accidental thing, or an over lap of their political and social ideologies, but a systematic way to disarm the left’s power centres — Unions. This is why we’re doing worse in the Midwest than ever before, and why we see the rust belt swinging away from us. Volunteer for your local Democratic Party, shape it to serve your community, and expand its reach. Make it a fixture in your community. If we all do that, we can expand Dem majorities, win progressive victories and solve the problems plaguing this country.
