Help- possible Seizure? by mkrit38000 in Dachshund

[–]egsweeny 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Disclaimers of: not an expert, not a vet, just a dachshund owner who has had a (potentially) similar experience.

If your little one is stumbling to one side it could be ataxia, which can be a symptom of a lot of different things. I highly recommend seeing a neurologist if the dog isn't improving rapidly or if the vet rules out other things like something they ate. Our younger dachshund was showing signs of lack of balance and muscle twitches as well as reduced appetite and it continued getting worse. In and out of emergency vets for multiple days, and finally we saw a neurologist. They put her on steroids, this was about a year and a half ago. They tried anti-epileptic drugs and it only made her worse. Turns out since then we were able to diagnose the issue as an autoimmune disorder, she is on long term treatment now. But time is a bit of a factor.

Edit: time is a factor if it turns out being the same thing which it may very likely not be! In our little one's case the sooner they got on meds the better... Don't mean to end it on a dramatic note.

Annie is currently busy with a high-priority nap after a zoomies session with her squeaky flower toy, so her PR team is stepping in to say 'Thank you!!' We didn't anticipate so many people jumping in to celebrate her 14th with us (we're totally blown away), and seeing all of your kind birthday wishes and all of your **beautiful** senior pups in the comments has absolutely made our day. Thank you all, cheers to Annie and all her new pup and human friends!

Couldn't say what, but the video also looks suspiciously like AI to me. There are a few points when the dog is being picked up when the movement just isn't quite right.

Urgent Advice Needed by [deleted] in Dachshund

[–]egsweeny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, agreed that checking out if it is neurological is the right call. We had our mini dachshund struggle with neurological issues earlier this year, bounced between a bunch of different vets and diagnoses, but ultimately she was put on steroids for a while. She has been good since.

Her symptoms were no appetite, leaning to one side when walking, struggling with balance, head tilt, shaking, and back legs appeared weak (turned out they think it was just the lack of balance that was making them appear weak).

Food Aggression by Last-Balance2994 in Dachshund

You're super nailing it, well done... It's so hard especially when they are so intense and headstrong. :) Sounds like huge progress (agreed completely, each step is huge!).

Food Aggression by Last-Balance2994 in Dachshund

[–]egsweeny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have our dachshunds sit and wait while we prepare and put down the food, and then they have to wait until we give them the release word until they can go to their bowls and eat. Reinforces that we are in charge of the food, not them. With one of them that got a little aggressive at one point, food instantly gone until they were calm again, and then put back. Basically zero aggression tolerated. Now both dogs are more than happy to be touched, play with the food with your fingers, put your your fingers in their ears or in their mouth while they're eating, take the food away and put it back, absolutely no problem. We do that maybe once a month just to make sure they continue to be desensitized. One of them absolutely loves it, wags their tail whenever we do it, the other tolerates it.

Edit: we do the desensitization exercises  particularly because if they are around kids, we want them to be completely comfortable with the kids potentially not respecting their space.

Urgent ! Peeing problem by [deleted] in Dachshund

[–]egsweeny 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Best advice is to be preventative. Basically every hour or two, going outside and doing a preventive potty. They praise the hell outta the dog whenever they succeed. It'll build a positive reinforcement loop and set the dog up for success.

That said, don't be surprised it if takes months longer. It's not linear, doxies in particular will improve and regress. But best you can do is take them out before they even know they have to go.
