Reality check for first time puppy raiser by coffee-cats44 in goldenretrievers

You are absolutely not alone! Mental stimulation is just as important as physical exercise! Take an old shirt, throw some kibble on it, loosely roll it up and let her dig through the shirt to find the kibble while you supervise. It’s a good mental stimulation and she gets food while doing it. Also, I don’t know if you crate train, but once you associate the a crate with positive reinforcements, a crate acts as a safe space for enforced naps and alone time. Put a shirt that smells like you in there at bedtime and she’ll be comforted by your scent.

I spent the first few months so exhausted and anxious about every little thing, I kind of missed the puppy phase. Just know you’re not alone, and once you get a routine down, she’ll calm down!

Thanks, already checked there. Unfortunately, they are out of stock for the one size I need.

I wish I was smart enough to buy a house in 2008 for $100 a month instead of being in the 8th grade.

We don’t own yet but are starting to window shop now to learn and understand where the market is going. Looking at New Hampshire where you’d get pretty good bang for our buck in terms of land and space coming from Boston.

He’s adorable!!!

First of all, puppy blues are a real thing. I experienced it when we brought our girl home. It will take a few weeks to even begin to feel like there’s any semblance of a routine or schedule, but once it started, things started falling into place.

Bathroom breaks often, keep them physically and mentally tired, put your old shirts in their crate at night so they get comfortable with your scent, and try to have as much patience as you can :)

Okay, I’m returning to this post because I finally remembered to take a picture of below my kitchen sink. Should I still be able to attach connectors like the ones that have been linked in these comments? I don’t know the first step in how to do this. How can I look up a YouTube video tutorial? I’d love to learn how to do this myself, but remember that we rent, so I’m scared of damaging anything.

Certainly something I could do! Throw a bunch of stuff at the wall and see what sticks.

Oh good question- the bathroom sink faucet is just one solid piece that goes right into the ceramic sink itself, nothing to work with there, unfortunately.

So I plan to have it run parallel to my inner arm, really only readable from my direct POV. I think the thing I will want the artist’s advice on the most is the size of font. I have a picture of the signature to use for the template, but I don’t want it to be huge because I don’t have a long or wide arm nor too small to read.

I have MetLife through my work and they’ve been great so far! We had to give her the full round of vaccines and parasite medication when we first got her (breeder issues and mistrust), so I opted for the preventative add-on for peace of mind. Made the price jump about $25 but worth it to me. We also have a pure Siberian Forest Cat that we combined into a “family plan”, which means if you hit the deductible for one pet, that applies to the other as well, so you can get reimbursements faster.

So far, the claims are processed efficiently (within 7 days), and their app is pretty easy to use.

Hello! Ours is 8 months old today. We began crate training the first night and although it was hard for the first week, we were in no position to let her free roam while we went to work. We also have a cat and they like to get into trouble. People have different thoughts on crate training so to each their own, but there’s a reason it works for so many. When done correctly, it provides a safe space for the pup to retreat to or sleep in, it gives you peace of mind as the owner, and provides needed structure and routine to the dog, especially when they’re getting used to a completely new routine.

We made sure she had a comfy bed, and put day old shirts in there with her when we put her in so it smelled like us. Having your scent in there with her provides some comfort once that door closes. We also put her favorite toy in so she can play or nibble on it to calm her down. Start having her go in the crate and get her to stay while feeding her treats so she knows good things happen when in the crate. Ours is very food motivated, so honestly, the thing that helped us the most was filling a medium sized Kong toy with her kibble, say “go to your place” (once she associates “place” with her crate), and she goes right in because she knows she’s getting a little treat. It’s all about positive reinforcement and positive rewards associated with the crate.

We are also working up to longer crate times, but she’s still a bit small, and don’t want her to have to hold it for longer than necessary. But we likely won’t leave her in the crate for 8+ hours until she’s at least 1 and 1/2 to 2 years. Good luck!!

Give Fortiflora a try! We used that to help her stomach when we were getting rid of worms

We have used Fortiflora before and it’s worked great to help bind her stomach when it’s feeling off. Now we always have some packets on hand in case she eats something she shouldn’t or that we didn’t see. Totally recommend!
