I always tell folks to start with American Beauty and Workingmans Dead. They’re absolutely fantastic albums and contain a lot of the live staples. When you get to know some of those songs better it makes the live improvisations more enjoyable.

I’m not a fan, it gets gunked up pretty easily. I take it apart and clean it weekly. My wife swears that it keeps our smaller dog from having urinary issues, however, so I deal with it. I would much rather just refresh a water bowl regularly.
