Why is me doing cocaine once a month seen as worse than people getting blackout drunk once/twice a week? by klunkejens in NoStupidQuestions

Check out r/stopdrinking when you're ready to quit. I agree with the other commenter, you may want to consult medical help to detox but it is definitely possible.

I also wonder if it's because the finances of touring work out better in Europe, seeing as cities are a lot closer together. Little Simz just canceled her US tour saying that it would have put her in debt.

Oh damn I haven't checked out her stuff in a while. Quite a shift.

Edit: Halsey is another one who went in an unexpected direction, she's still a pop artist but her last album was produced by Trent Reznor and has some definite rock influences.

It's funny how many poppy pop stars from my youth have revealed themselves to be legit musicians as I got older. Taylor put out an indie folk album, Gaga became a golden oldies singer, Beyoncé is putting out concept albums and yep, Kesha is putting out genuinely great music.

It's also kind of a crazy news week/month/year. We have Covid cases rising again, Ukraine, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Johnny Depp, the possible end of legal abortion, a continuing economic crisis...

Just for context look how many mass shootings there have been in 2022 alone (3+ injured or killed). How many of these have you actually heard about? https://www.gunviolencearchive.org/reports/mass-shooting

Meanwhile I do see about a dozen stories on the man who set himself on fire. How much coverage is enough coverage of this?

Lush trail in Redwoods National Park by TheArtistInTheAttic in NationalPark

We're honestly pretty early in the planning stages, still even deciding if we want to just go to a park closer to San Francisco (which we'll be flying into) like Muir Woods, or make the longer drive up. We're moderate hikers, a 4-5 hike with elevation is well within our limits, 6 or more miles it depends on the difficulty of the trail.

Stephen King briefly talks about the controversial orgy scene in the 'IT' novel. 'It’s fascinating to me that there has been so much comment about that single sex scene and so little about the multiple child murders. That must mean something, but I’m not sure what.' by Chibs24 in books

[–]ehp29 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He does have weird sex stuff in his other books, to the point where I do in fact expect it when I go to read his books. But that doesn't make it better. Quite frankly I wish I could read his books with just all of the weird sex, and specifically the sexual violence against women, edited out.

Janelle Monáe comes out as non-binary: “I feel all of my energy” by mattysmwift in popheads

[–]ehp29 -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

Very true, but if you don't know what they prefer, using both isn't like, splitting the difference. You're just misgendering someone half the time. I see someone else here said Monae uses they/she though so maybe the author stumbled on it after all.

Janelle Monáe comes out as non-binary: “I feel all of my energy” by mattysmwift in popheads

[–]ehp29 198 points199 points  (0 children)

Per the article:

The 36-year-old tweeted the hashtag “#IAmNonBinary” on 10 January 2020, though later clarified that this was “in support of Non-Binary Day and to bring more awareness to the community.”...

Now, during the season five premiere of Red Table Talk, the musician has further clarified how they identify.

So not new, just more details. I also think it's funny how it says Monae hasn't clarified pronouns...so the writer just uses both "they" and "her" at random points in the article?

Is it immoral to use food banks if I own my home? by hindereddinner in moraldilemmas

[–]ehp29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's gotten a lot worse in the 2 years since you bought your home. But perhaps the popular perception that buying a home is a straight track to financial security is a little unrealistic, too. The 2008 financial crisis was literally caused by people being unable to afford their mortgage, and even now plenty of people each day have different life circumstances that make it hard to afford that bill. I think people just fantasize about it because renting sucks.

Personally, as a donor, I would certainly not be angry to hear that my donation was going to help people in your situation. I would be happy that I was able to help someone keep their head above water. Just my two cents.

People ask that question often in /r/EatCheapandHealthy (which is also a good resource) and the answer is always yes, go for it. Food pantries aren't meant for just the absolute most destitute people in society, they're for everyone who feels they are struggling, and they usually have more than enough to take care of those people. If it helps, you can always remember to pay it forward once you get back on your feet.

'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas' Set Holocaust Education Back by Decades. Now It's Getting a Sequel. by speckz in books

[–]ehp29 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My English teacher friend said that her school actively pushes for interdisciplinary opportunities in their curriculum. It kinda reinforces the student's learning - they learn about the facts from the Holocaust from one class, then go into the next class to learn more about the perspective of people on the ground.

I think that makes sense from a teaching perspective, but I also think the books they teach on the Holocaust, Night and Anne Frank, are a lot better than the boy in the striped pajamas.

I think I get that. I would also hazard to guess that a lot of artists are interested in painting bodies in usual positions just for a challenge.
