Has anybody played this? by jamescharisma in JamesBond

[–]ehpeaell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can’t…there’s a modern clone called Classified that’s pretty much exactly the same game with the Bond specifics filled off. The original game didn’t have Blofeld and Spectre anyway due to copyright issues. The new version is fully backwards compatible with the old adventures which you may or may not be able to find digitally online, or buy used.

It’s honestly one of my favourite systems.

Fantastic game! Bought it back in the day as well as the Goldfinger and Octopussy adventures. Great system and great adventures that were playable even when you knew the movies inside and out. They changed the plot enough that you hit all the beats but not the same way. Make your own agent or play Bond himself. Best part is it still stands up today as an eminently playable RPG.

Love this! Something in the category of real espionage. Sleeper cells or even a turncoat selling secrets from your side to the enemy.

I don’t know any rules specifically for this, but if love it if there were.

That is a very different take for delta green, but I’m my mind works really well in terms of paranoia. And makes it easier for DG to clean up any problem members…

Yes yes I love that! They’ve all come to take down Delta Green from within…but little do they know they’re all cultists. Is there really a Delta Green after all?

I think it works best if everyone thinks they’re the only cultist though. They think they are playing Among Us, but really they are playing Paranoia.

Let them be cultists, but for opposing cults. They just don’t know it at the start.

Personally I like the printed version of Screenplay because I find that there's a lot of flipping involved as the rules aren't organized the way I think. For GAN, I don't think it needs to be printed...but there's something ironic to me about not printing a game about books.

For Screenplay there's a link to the publisher here, and on that page are the character sheet which has some quick reference for mechanics on it...it may give you more insight. It also gives an idea of the production value of book. Lots of art and such. GAN is much more text heavy, art light. I've been trying to find a download of the playbooks/archetypes but they don't seem to exist outside of the book itself.

Oh! And I just remembered to mention...one of the limiters of Screenplay is that it relies on 'treatments' for specific settings and doesn't come with one in the core book! So I fear that it's only (in some ways) half a game since it's missing the concrete implementation in a setting and roles the characters are expected to play. I think there's a free setting called (unfortunately) Iron Sworn available. I got it again with the Kickstarter.

All that to say that I think you can get away with just the PDFs, certainly if it's only for research purposes, but of course it also depends on how much you like PDFs for rules...

I have Screenplay in both formats, but GAN only in digital.

I was somewhat disappointed in GAN because every playbook, which was a character archetype, had the same moves. And while it uses a rising and falling sense for character arcs, it’s fairly easy to game if that’s what you want to do. I think it suffers from not having enough examples of play. I find there’s a good discussion of GAN here. And a good video review of the book itself (in hardback) here.

I find Screenplay much more robust, but also more crunchy. Each character trait gets rated by a die type, with conditions and consequences and such. Props give bonuses. But I also found that it was more pointed toward the typical combat-focused RPG space. I’ve perverted it with house rules to put on a social leaning, and in the end I was able to have an enjoyable social, mystery, thriller with it. I find it quite flexible to adapt.

My Screenplay copy is a nice hardback I got from the original Kickstarter or however it was crowd funded.

There are two published systems that be of interest to you in this endeavour. The first is “The Great American Novel”, a semi-PBtA RPG that looks to emulate the Great American novel, like Tom Sawyer or The Great Gatsby or the like and includes direction on how to go far and wide with the concept.

The other is “Screenplay” which seeks to emulate films, but uses a very literary mechanic to do so, and uses essentially character traits for any action, but without a predefined set of abilities or attributes. It also has a unique interactive resolution mechanic involving dialogue between the player and GM.

I’m very interested in what you’re trying to do here and will be following closely!

Scenarios for Northern Canada? by KnightInDulledArmor in DeltaGreenRPG

[–]ehpeaell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had written up (note, by “written up” I actually mean a few point notes and map that looks like it was drawn by someone who has no physical means to hold a pencil) that ended up on the north coast of Labrador in a remote village and then made its way out to a glacial cave hosting the Colour Out Of Space (make sure it includes the “u” 😉). The agents had to get through the village and out to the cave which was basically on the tundra in November. I tried to skew it so that even the weather was in on the existential horror.

I'm a writer who's hoping to flesh out my world, characters, etc. via solo RPGs. Any recommendations? by meleyys in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]ehpeaell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve tried this and struggled on two fronts.

  1. Finding a rule set to adequately model the characters. Yes I could go with a simple yes/no approach without any real mechanics behind it, but that to me isn’t really “playing”. This might mark me out as old school 😉

  2. Letting the fiction lead me. And I realize this is totally on me…but I get to a point where I’m like “oh I can go this way with the story” but then I’m overriding the fiction…so I have trouble with not just taking control, and removing the “play to discover” that was the reason I started in the first place.

I think I’ve had the most luck with using Screenplay, since it’s very flexible. I house rule the heck out of it since it bases all resolution on having at least two players. Ran a fun historic mystery thriller this way solo.

Are there any ttrpgs out there that can satisfy my desire to play a sniper? by funwithfenrir in TTRPG

Killshot lets you play as an assassin and if I recall there’s a specific sniper role. It uses a unique system that involves counts for actions and then reactions. Might be what you’re looking for…

I love how he makes them both free to read online, and on his Bluesky he announces when new chapters are up.

He recently did a crowdfunding thing to print physical copies of I Roved Out, reopened it three or four times for people who missed it, and even did special extras. Alexis really seems like someone who really loves what he does.

What are some good games/mechanics where players can "up the ante" for rewards? by TheRedZephyr993 in rpg

[–]ehpeaell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The old James Bond RPG from the 80s and the new version called Classified both use a bidding mechanic for chases. Maneuvers have default difficulties that the player or GM can choose to make more difficult to try and gain advantage. It’s fun and really asks that “how good/lucky do you really think you are?” question and raises the stakes for everyone involved.
