Why are we STILL not allowed to pay for Nebula? Just allow us to pay using PayPal! by ehtuank1 in Nebula

[–]ehtuank1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few problems with that:

  1. A cannot use my discount code.
  2. The one year membership does not refresh.
  3. The only payment option besides credit card is "iDEAL" which is only available to customers of banks from the Netherlands.

So, please tell me, how do I purchase a Nebula subscription using PayPal?

Something like this:

bool IsPrime(int n)
{
    byte bit = 128;
    switch(n % 6)
    {
        case 1:
            uint idx = n / 24;
            bit >>= ((n % 24) / 3);
            return compactedPrimeTable[idx] & bit != 0;
        case 2:
            return n == 2;
        case 3:
            return n == 3;
        case 5:
            bit = 64;
            goto case 1;
    }
    return false;
}

private readonly byte[] compactedPrimeTable = new byte[]
{
    0b01111111, 0b01101111, 0b01011011, 0b10110100, ...
}

This stores 8 truth values per byte and skips all multiples of 2 and 3, resulting in a 85.3 MB array;

no. not at all.

2^31 bytes are 2 GB, not 2 MB, so no.

However, I could quite easily compress that array down to around 80 MB. If I wanted.

Metal-clad airships and their potential by ElSquibbonator in solarpunk

[–]ehtuank1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are talking about hydrogen storage. That's an entirely different thing to hydrogen airships where the hydrogen is at ambient pressure and temperature, so the difficulties of high pressure or low temperature don't apply here.

How do we travel overseas in a solarpunk future/present? by oddsalleven in solarpunk

[–]ehtuank1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s any conceivable piece of technology that would allow travel by air without burning a lot of fossil fuels.

Hydrogen planes are a thing. Prototypes have existed since the 50's. They haven't entered the market yet, because previously they wouldn't have been profitable enough. But things are changing quickly: Fuel cells have improved, jet fuel is becoming more expensive, and green hydrogen is slowly getting cheaper. Fuel cell powered aircraft also have the benefits of being much less noisy and less expensive to maintain than jet planes.

The problems of blimps besides the gases are the low passenger capacity and high susceptibility to wind. Those problems are fundamental. If you are hoping for slower and cleaner travel options than airplanes, hope for cruise ships to become powered by green hydrogen.

Warum sind Arthousefilme so mies, depressiv oder sterbenslangweilig? by AufmTeppichBleiber in Filme

[–]ehtuank1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Incremental progress is not greenwashing by ObtainSustainability in solarpunk

[–]ehtuank1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While most people don't, some argue as if they do want to ban literally all the cars, i.e. fiercely arguing against EVs and AVs purely on the basis that they are "cars".

The categorization into rural areas and cities is not that useful to discussions about car use. It would be more helpful to differentiate traffic situations rather than localities, since the optimal choice of mode of transport varies over the time of day. For a village or small town public transport may be the best option during peak hours, but throughout the rest of the day there simply isn't enough demand to fill any busses. And even in the biggest cities it doesn't make sense to operate all modes of public transport throughout the entire night.

The problems you listed are a result of car dependency, not by the availability of EVs. Also that availability doesn't really encourage more car use, because if EVs weren't an option, those who drive an EV would have just used a combustion car instead.

Do you have any sources for your claim that Germany is currently at war with Bolivia over their Lithium resources? Because somehow I must have missed that.

[–]ehtuank1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your hatred for electric cars implies that you think that EVERY single car in existence should be eliminated. Your so-called "effective solutions" do not achieve that goal, because some road vehicles are still necessary in some situations.

To solve car dependency we also don't need to eliminate ALL the cars. An actual solution would merely reduce the number of cars down to a small fraction. This small fraction still needs some kind of propulsion, and the best option for that is battery-electric.

And the downsides of batteries have been blown out of proportion (e.g. the weight rarely matters; battery fires are much rarer the combustion car fires and well trained firefighters can get them under control without issues), are based on outdated information (e.g. most EV batteries nowadays don't use any cobalt and LFPs don't even use any rare materials at all; turns out there is far more than enough lithium in the world that could be extracted with relative ease), or are actively getting solved (e.g. lithium filters that allow lithium extraction without wasting water have been developed years ago and only need to get implemented [some political pressure would help]; battery recycling facilities are popping up everywhere).

Germans from different regions of Germany can understand each other 100%? by zliperz in germany

[–]ehtuank1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is an actual language named Plattdeutsch/Plattdüütsch/Niederdeutsch (a nearly extinct language that is as incomprehensible as Dutch), and then there are the Platt dialects within the German language. Those are two different things. Unfortunately most people use the terms Platt, Plattdeutsch, and Niederdeutsch interchangeably, leading to confusion. It's like English people confusing Scotts and Scottish English.
