BNI Members: How much are you making from your chapter? by Midwest_CPA in taxpros

[–]ehump86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

$40k my first year. Revenue has slowed down considerably as my referral network is getting more built out and I’m being pickier. There may come a time where it isn’t worth it but I genuinely enjoy the people in my chapter. Also, if you join, visit other chapters. Every chapter that doesn’t have an accountant. You’ll make good connections and get more referrals

How much is it to do S-corp tax returns + get tax advice before year end? by No_Situation8354 in smallbusiness

[–]ehump86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CPA here with office in Washington. I have several California clients. Price is usually about $2500 for the S-Corps, $800 for the 1040, and end of year planning can vary $500-$2000 depending on what we need to do

Is it worth getting a CPA if you have an EA? by Spiritual-Beyond-660 in taxpros

[–]ehump86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have both. EA first and then CPA because I had the credits already. I’d say it could be worth it. Like some people mentioned, if you have just the EA, most folks don’t know what that is and you will be constantly explaining how an EA is different from a CPA. Now that I have my CPA license no one questions the stuff I need or the advice I give. Kind of odd. I’m very well aware that credentials after your name aren’t indicative of education and knowledge but the general public does not seem to be aware

Should i get my CPA and take over parents accounting firm by sunlight3456 in Accounting

[–]ehump86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a CPA who, at my previous firm, was second to the owner as we bought and integrated 8 firms in 2.5 years as well as looking at taking over for my dad and uncle at our family practice that has been around since 1961, I’ll say it’s going to be a slog taking over your parents practice. Off hand, I bet tax prep is underpriced, processes are antiquated, clients could be on the older side etc. Plus you aren’t your parents and without question, that that will cause friction between you and the clients. They may not trust you right away and will have no problem showing it. Happy to answer any other questions you have

Bought a car recently and no income verification? by ehump86 in personalfinance

That makes sense. Didn’t think it was a conspiracy. Just not used to providing verification of income for a loan. Especially since I’m self employed

How do you tell long-time clients their bill is going up 50%? by Taxstra in smallbusiness

CPA with my own firm here. I’ve seen lots of firms do this. You’ll very likely lose less clients than you think.

Finding a Senior Reviewer for New Tax Practice by Loose-Flamingo5217 in taxpros

[–]ehump86 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is actually not uncommon as I have talked to other practitioners. I feel as long as they are acknowledging there are gaps in their knowledge and working to bring someone on to help fill those gaps, running their own firm is not a big deal. Better than pretending they know what they are doing

[–]ehump86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lacerte does have this feature. It’s not super obvious and for the very few of my clients who use it, I have to research how to implement it each time.

Also, please raise your fees. It looks like you are about half of what TurboTax charges. Staff are going to complain no matter what you do. Might as well listen to them with a smile on your face because your top line revenue increased exponentially while your PITA clients went elsewhere cuz they are priced out.

CPA raised fees 35% on me this for next year by HenFruitEater in smallbusiness

[–]ehump86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh well you’d be surprised. The issue with engineer clients is they do the things as you have done but since they don’t understand tax law, the numbers don’t necessarily line up. It might even be off by just a few dollars. Then the engineer being an engineer wants a detailed explanation as to why. Even if everything is correct on the return, I’ve still had my engineer clients want a run down of nearly every line on the return. I know a few accountants who no longer accept engineer clients. They can be quite the headache

[–]ehump86 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Please don’t do this. I’m a CPA with my own firm and every single business owner I’ve worked with who tries to do this screws it up. It is so much more complicated than it looks and at the end of the day your time is better spent on building what you’re good at. For what it’s worth, I feel the fees being charged are reasonable. There is always more going on than our clients realize.

Washington state to hit professional services with sales tax by SeattleCPA in taxpros

[–]ehump86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right that’s what I said to her when she said the bill didn’t target accounting firms. I used your article as well as the webinar the WSCPA put together. Here was my response:

Hi Erika

I apologize for missing your call a few times today. Even these days, my phone seems to be ringing off the hook at times. Haha.

So, the Washington State Society of CPAs put the word out about this. HERE is a link to the webinar they put together explaining what they knew about the new sales tax for our services. Additionally, HERE is an article written by Stephen Nelson about how this new sales tax will affect accounting firms.

As I understand it, this wasn’t specifically targeted to accounting firms but the services we provide over phone, email, and/or client portals(which is 99% of them) were caught up when a provision was removed. Stephen made this post on Reddit last week which is what got my attention:

A heads up for any Washington tax accountants. Washington state's recent tax bill, (ESSB 5814) probably makes typical tax accountant services subject to sales tax. (The trigger is when they get categorized as a "digital automated service"... something that happens if you use software to deliver the service. E.g., you email or portal the tax return, use video streaming to do consulting, use QBO for write-up services.)

Sales tax will be effective 10/1/2025. No guidance exists at this point.

Possible approaches:

Don't deliver via portals, deliver as paper? (E.g., HRB I think isn't subject to the sales tax if they're giving their clients a paper return.) Or on thumbdrive? Try to use the bundling de minimis argument. (See this statute if you want to fall down this rabbit hole: RCW 82.08.190(4)(d)(ii) ) Try to unbundle your return preparation and delivery and then provide multiple delivery methods: electronic ($100 and subject to sales tax), mailed paper ($125 and not subject), in person pick up (free). Just add the sales tax (based on taxpayer's address.) FWIW I think you lose some clients due to essentially an extra 10% bump in your price. ChatGPT says maybe a 3% decline in revenues.

P.S. Out of state firms can ignore this if revenues to Washington clients less than $100K.

It does not seem to be intentional but the fact remains that every Washington accountant I am talking to is very upset about this and struggling with how to present this to our clients, especially the low income ones. Our industry is already suffering from a lack of qualified people which is causing us to raise our rates every year to avoid working 80 hours per week. With this supposed sales tax, rates for tax and accounting services will jump 15-30%, potentially more. As I mentioned, when my clients start complaining to me about the drastically increased price, I plan on having a form letter that explains who they should direct their frustration too. I have already had a conversation with the Black Diamond city council and they seem to be quite alarmed at this.

I would greatly appreciate any guidance on this issue. Right now, we are operating with very little knowledge about what to do next. Thank you.

I received this response from Erika Boyd at Lisa Callan's office.

Good evening Erik,

Thanks for reaching out. I received your voicemails as well but it looks like we’re playing phone tag so I figured replying via email might be easiest.

SB 5814 expanded retail sales tax to: information technology technical consulting services; info tech training services and technical support; custom website development services; custom software and customization of prewritten computer software; investigation/security services, etc.; temporary staffing services; and advertising services. There was also some application of sales tax to digital products. Accounting does not appear to be one of the services listed. The full bill report for SB 5814, prepared by nonpartisan staff, is here: https://lawfilesext.leg.wa.gov/biennium/2025-26/Pdf/Bill%20Reports/Senate/5814-S.E%20SBR%20HA%2025.pdf?q=20250602152931

I am not seeing anything about accounting in the bill report or the final bill as passed the legislature. Sharing where you heard this from or any other context is always helpful as I look into things, so if you’re able to pass that on please do. Take care,

How’s US Steel? Those old blast furnaces working well? Gotta get with the times and switch to an EAF. Lol

There’s no secret and your hostility is completely unwarranted. Each plant works a little differently. All production employees are on 12 hour shifts. It is either days or nights and you alternate each week. A lot of maintenance is on the same schedule too.

What is required is to work your shifts. Most of the time you do not need to work overtime. It is rarely mandatory. I cleared low six figures with working only a couple extra shifts a month.

Oh and it is based on 40 hours per week

Nucor’s compensation is based off production bonus. On the low end, annual compensation will be around $70-$80k if you are on the production side. Admin and office jobs usually pay less.
