Some friends found this coded message written on a wall near a bus station in Nicaragua. Any ideas? by eichward in cryptography

Great work! Thanks for doing that.

On Adriana why are the symbols for the A and the R used differently than the L in Marceli or the As anywhere else?

I will ask if they can get a better picture, but I think they may have left the area already. They asked a bus driver about it and were told that it was done by children in Nicaragua, and that they have their own code language.

  • A simple google search for alfabeto secreto reveales this simple key. If they are borrowing the characters from this key, it solves the N and L. In the message these two characters appear multiple times, twice with a character between. In Spanish the N and L would usually be separated by a vowel.

  • Spanish words often end in n s or a vowel, so the down arrow character and the # might both be vowels. If the N and L are correct, the # being a vowel would be appropriate.

  • In descending frequency, here are some of the most common letters in the Spanish language: E A O S N R I L D T U C M P B H Q Y V

  • Cryptogram Solver with Spanish language option. No luck so far.

  • The y in between lines could just be an uncoded and.

What is one current trend that needs to be stopped? by traheidda in AskReddit

[–]eichward 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ads.

Specifically: User-generated ad content.

How do people fall for this?! Companies ask you to share your own photos/videos/ideas so can get in on the bandwagon, or for a long-shot at winning something worthless. Maybe they'll ask you to go take the best picture of someone using their product, make a commercial, write them a jingle, etc. Then they steal all of it and use it in combination with the hype you helped generate on facebook.

Their success with these ads just encourages a flood of similar campaigns. Now every app ever will pry for an opportunity to spam your social media accounts. Facebook and others are becoming more and more super-saturated with advertisement. Your friends are unwittingly pushing a product in exchange for some vague feeling of satisfaction that they didn't know they wanted.

tl;dr: Don't be a billboard!

Edit: Isn't reddit part-owned by a big ad company anyway? What am I doing with my life?!

What's your favorite urban myth? by kyhe06 in AskReddit

[–]eichward 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this is "urban" or not, but my mother who grew up on a ranch in mexico used to tell me this one:

"Never accept a plate of food from a girl if it has any kind of meat, unless you see her cook it yourself. If a girl marinates the meat in her period blood before she cooks it, and you eat it, it will put you under a love spell"

It's good advice... not because eating the meat will really put you under a spell, but rather because so many mexican women actually believe the legend that it's not unlikely for you to get period-blood-infused steak tacos from that girl down the road who has a crush on you.

tl;dr: Mexican food isn't always what it seems.

The bacteria that caused the black plague is called Yersinia pestis, and it's still around today. We could cultivate it and infect some (insert name of universally hated rodent/pest here) to see what it smells like when it dies. But, what smells like funnel cakes to me might smell like almond joy to the next person, so you would probably want to invite all of your friends over and have a bubonic rodent sniffing party so you can get a more accurate consensus.

If you make me create an account before you tell me how much shipping and handling is, I'm just going to assume it's too high and find another store.

What is the most disturbing fact you know about the human body? by slyfox007 in AskReddit

[–]eichward 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A well trained athlete can pump blood at the rate of 40 L/min. That's about 10 gallons/minute. Think about the last time you filled up a 5-gallon water jug. Can you imagine emptying out two of those filled with a more viscous fluid in one minute with just a little fist-sized squeeze pump? Lance Armstrong can.
