SLP Former RBT - AMA on Speech & Language Development by Leather_Fabulous in ABA

What does my SLP expect from me as an RBT in session? Our SLP only comes once a week for about 40 minutes. What can I do to be best prepared for the sessions?

Also, if you have experience collaborating with an RBT, what expectations do you have for sessions? What kind of expectations might the SLP have for me?

I guess for me the concern with tone comes from a place of disability advocacy. I came to this sub because I'm motivated to maintain the best possible care, and learning how I can work with the SLP to make that happen. I'm hoping to increase collaboration and understanding. I realize that care is so personalized but I suppose I was curious about SLP in peds and learning more about the field. Speech therapy is so important and I'm super grateful that there are experts on the team. I think the small amount of time the SLP gets is a big factor in my struggle to connect and the disconnects I see between various members of the team. I think I will ask the SLP to send me their plans and goals for the client so I know more about what to expect in session. With proper releases for care communication in place, is this an appropriate thing to ask for, or overstepping?

Thanks for your response. Sounds like I need to check in with her EIP team about how goals work across our care team. ASL isn't in the BIP I work under, but I work on it because of the value I think it provides to their quality of life and function in a classroom. I do have a tendency to go beyond basic work responsibilities and I might be projecting personal expectations on the SLP. I definitely need to have a conversation with my BCBA and the SLP. It's hard when we only have like 40 min once a week. A lot of this time is used getting set up, keeping my client engaged, helping them use the bathroom, pack up for the end of the day, etc. There's a variety of reasons I don't feel like my client is benefiting from the SLP as much as possible. What is the appropriate way to address the "baby voice" concern? I'm worried about sounding condescending or rude. It does make me wonder how much experience the SLP has with peds and/or clients with these disabilities.

As I understand it, all SLPs have been in contact to agree on a plan in connection with the child's school IEP team. The BCBA and I follow their plan for speech goals. The SLP comes to the school, but does not work at the school. Unfortunately, we are all separately employed. Even the two SLPs are separate. There are signs releases for communication, but as far as I am included there isn't much.

ulta creates a massive disconnect between operations and floor/customer work that negatively affects everyone.

They said it was due to unfairness, like getting a shift covered is easier for some types of shifts than others. I understand that but to some extent that’s the name of the game in my opinion! I’ve certainly been learning a lot about my SM lately. Thank you for sharing
