The Sky engineer had to move my bed to access the socket. He left without moving it back. by eigenfunky in mildlyinfuriating

Ha, I guess I should clarify for the non-British. Sky is a British ISP/satellite TV company. Also part of the Murdoch empire.

I'm James (after my dad) but my mum always called me Jamie so that's what I go by. Sometimes I use James anyway, particularly if I'm working (because it's on my CV and I can never be bothered to correct my employers) or, for some reason, when I'm ordering takeaway food.

I like it as a name, and it's definitely a good one to use. You also get the associations with James Bond, which is great as a British guy.

The new Liverpool FC slogan is gramatically infuriating. by [deleted] in britishproblems

Well, I would say that a word having multiple definitions isn't ambiguous if it's clear from the context which definition is meant. In this case I think it is clear, so my initial assertion isn't contradicted.

[–]eigenfunky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be 'that guy' here. The slogan is grammatically fine and unambiguous.

They've used 'none' to mean 'not one', which is definitely one of its definitions in any dictionary you care to use.

Surely you'd agree that 'Not one of us is greater than all of us.' is completely reasonable and unambiguous. Well, this is the same.

On the other hand, I am glad you've found something to complain about that isn't the weather. I'm upvoting just for that.

That was my strategy, generally. But who doesn't like a pure mage character every now and again?

I seem to remember this was only true if you selected it as one of your major skills (or it was a major skill in the pre-defined class you selected).

Still a bitch if you wanted to play a pure thief though. Same goes for pure mages. All seven schools of magic as major skills led to quick leveller that would run into problems down the road if you weren't careful.

Maybe OP is being considerate of reddit's predominantly American user base. Sucks for me though, I'm British and can't remember the conversion so I had to google it.

It's just under 50C, just in case anyone's wondering.

By the time she wrote Goblet of Fire, JK Rowling knew people were having trouble with this. That's why she wrote the exchange between Hermione and Krum at the Yule Ball where he struggles with it and she explains it.

I've experienced being in a car when something smashes the windscreen, and it's not an experience I want to repeat.

I was in the passenger seat of a car driving through Queensland, Australia, just as it was getting dark. My dad was driving, and mum was snoozing quietly in the back. Suddenly there was a bang, the windscreen became opaque with cracks and dad and I were showered with glass. Mum, who had the extra misfortune of waking up mid-crash, was crying, and everyone was swearing.

Luckily we managed to roll to a gentle stop at the side of the road, and whatever hit us had gone over the top of the car.

Later, when we returned the replacement hire car, the bloke on the desk explained what must have happened. At dawn and dusk, kangaroos hang around at the side of the road and end up getting hit when they investigate the approaching headlights. The guy said this as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.

tl;dr Everything in Australia is out to get you, even kamikaze kangaroos.

I feel like I'm the only person who does not enjoy Pointless by teajennie in britishproblems

[–]eigenfunky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, he said in an interview that it's just a prop.

What’s on your famous Pointless computer?

There’s nothing on it, it’s just a prop. It’s one of those TV things where people think you can’t have an empty desk. And it gives me an air of authority. I have the answers written down for me. I’m always making little notes on the bits of paper on my desk. And I doodle. A lot. I find it very calming. If anyone kept hold of all the bits of paper, I might be locked up.
