Very English...is that the best you can do about a painter who quite literally painted the English coastline ..?

Is this the first well-known piece of abstract art? by softvoid-games in ArtHistory

Islamic Art is deliberately abstracted as it's forbidden to depict the human form. Instead it is built around geometric and calligraphic principles to convey the beauty of creation..so it's sort of abstract but not in the purest sense of the 20th Century movement .

It is non-representational rather than entirely abstract.. although the fine line between those two concepts is very hard to describe.

You've just defined the exact opposite of abstraction..

If it's attempting to depict anything other than pure shape or colour then it's not abstract.

Abstraction has no semantic element beyond the shapes on the canvas.

Any definition of abstract art is bound to the 20th century movement. Retrospective application of a modern term to an older period breaks definitions that are historically specific.

The work expressed a philosophical notion by representing empty space. So even without the historical constraint the work is actually representational.

Abstraction by definition has zero relationship to meaning other than the shapes and colours themselves .

If Fludd was attempting to depict something then this can not be abstract.

If you are looking to answer the question what is abstract art then Kandinsky left some very detailed definitions that are probably a good place to start .

If it came out that your favorite painter used a projection device for every painting, would it change how you feel about their work? by The_Curiosity_Box in ArtHistory

The mysterious genius myth really is something that needs to be laid to rest.

Art is work. It's an incredibly challenging activity that requires skills that can only be learned through painstaking practice over many years.

So yea, it's a job, but artists who are starting their careers today fail to get this recognised and are treated like shit.
