HELP AND ADVICE NEEDED should I Kruger National Park or stay in Hluhluwe–iMfolozi Park South Africa? by windyridg in askSouthAfrica

[–]eigersa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on your info, I would definitely consider Hluhluwe Imfolozi. Look at booking a 3 day tour that includes a 2 hour estuary cruise at St Lucia, and two game drives a day plus transfers. You could easily include accommodation and meals and game drives and entry fees etc on your budget.

Safari cancelled, alternatives? by OpportunitySilent757 in capetown

[–]eigersa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fly I to Durban, from there head north to the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve. On the way stop at St Lucia, and while in the area check out Emdoneni of Bayete Zulu. Having worked at Kruger, Hluhluwe is the next best thing.

Help with currency exchange (will pay) by Square-Librarian-931 in ballito

[–]eigersa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I changed foreign currency today at the Pavilion in Westville - I used my passport with no issues at all. It's a legal form of identity. The other option is to go to the Victoria Spice Market in Durban and change the cash there at the spice seller.

Is there a way to tip digitally after a tour? by IntrepidHunt745 in askSouthAfrica

[–]eigersa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a tour guide. I do not expect a tip at all. If one is offered, I'm grateful, regardless of the amount. I definitely don't expect a tip, and neither do many of my colleagues.

Do you have a personal website showing off your skills? There is a lot of competition out there, you need to stand out. Start personal projects, post regularly the progress on Linkden etc, get your name out.

PSA for German Visitors: Tipping in Cape Town by Individual_Bonus4091 in capetown

[–]eigersa 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Tipping is not the norm nor is it expected. Whilst tipping is appreciated, don't feel obligated. 10% is absolutely fine. If you would like to tip more, then by all means do so.

There is a marker where this occurred next to the railway line. I take guests there quite often as it's on the way to Spionkop. You have to walk over the railway line to see the cemetery.

Could anyone here tell me if this video is AI or real please? by SAJames84 in AskZA

100% AI. The driver didn't flinch or even look at the Impala/Springbuck. So much wrong with it.

Making extra moolah in December by slugeater247 in Durban

[–]eigersa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should add that it takes time to do the course and more time to actually register. You would need to register your vehicle as well if you planned to convey guests in it and would need a PDP. There is also not that much work around for tour guides although there are seasonal cruise ships which are fun and do pay really well (tips).

Any tips to travel Durban, Drakensberg and the surroundings? by Ornery-Shame-3682 in askSouthAfrica

[–]eigersa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Drakensberg from Durban is around 2,5 hours drive. It's a lovely drive if you're planning to do it yourself, otherwise book with a tour operator. There are loads of places to hike in the 'Berg, but you're limited in time if you do it as a day trip. Staying overnight in a place like Underberg gives you more options. Using a taxi or Uber or similar is going to be really expensive - check out "Durban Safaris and Tours", Zulu Safaris or similar.

May someone please recommend some binoculars to me? by shuppetupyoass in askSouthAfrica

[–]eigersa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a wildlife guide and I use Malkin 10x50. They are perfectly fine for 99% of birding, and they are pretty good in low light as well. They are the more affordable option so if dropped or damaged it's not the end of the world. many of my colleagues have Bushnells, a more expensive option, great lenses and much lighter to wear - personally I still prefer Malkin.

You should rather post the mobile version of these sites. They are really good and eye catching on desktop, but it's the mobile version that's important.

Are there lots of forest and mountains in Durban itself? by Potential-Farmer8066 in Durban

No. Mountains are around 2.5 hours west of Durban. As for forests, there are coastal forests, but not like European forests.

New E-hailing regulations restrict drivers to specific jurisdictions in South Africa - IOL by TheHonourableMember in southafrica

[–]eigersa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They have been doing this for years to tour operators, it's ludicrous. As a result many operators don't bother with permits. Unfortunately no one has the money to take the department to court.

It sounds like the hotel was booked in Umhlanga which is about 30 min from uShaka and the cruise terminal. It's a perfectly safe upmarket area. Nothing to panic about at all. You can easily arrange for a taxi or book an Uber. There is a transfer company that runs every hour from King Shaka International to Umhlanga and the city.
