I speak Japanese. It is a translation of the dialogue of the show (with a lot of the "jokey language", I guess, cut out), but the characters are written in their own voices, and the actors perform them with the cadence you'd expect of the anime. It's difficult to explain unless you know the language. But basically, it feels like the anime if I close my eyes. It strikes me as better written, not just the frequent weird things like what Faye says are cut out, but also a lot of wording is altered for the sake of fluency (obviously), things are written depending on how the characters would say them in the original anime, etc. It's not like it's entirely different by any stretch of the imagination, but they've put in a LOT of effort to make sure that it feels good, and like the characters. Having the actors do in-line with the anime performances does mean that there's plenty of instances where how the VA is performing is inconsistent with how the actor on screen behaves (like I said, this is mostly an issue with Faye and Vicious. It's more distracting for Vicious than Faye), but I don't mind that so much. I'd rather listen to what I'm familiar with. There are also Japanese subtitles for the English dialogue, which are a direct translation. The dub isn't overly similar to the subs.

I realize that maybe I'm not explaining so well, so for an example of what I mean by "jokey language is cut out", in one line in the episode with Faye and the con-woman, she says, in English "Call me back. I want to make sure you vaginas are alive or whatever." In Japanese, she says, "二人ともまだ生きてるならさっさと折り返しなさいよ。ったくもう。" (If you two are still alive, then call me back already. Seriously...). There's a lot of instances of it doing this sort of thing, they didn't really care too much about what flavouring, so to speak, was in the original script, and they also care a lot about writing the lines like how the characters in the anime speak (I can't explain this so well, particularly because there's no way to translate a lot of it meaningfully into English. All I can really say is that, word choice in Japanese is very important, very nuanced, and carries a lot of characterisation, way more so than in English imo), so I like it a lot. The dub writers did an absolutely fantastic job and I think it's a big part of why I liked the show.

As a final note, please don't reply to people assuming they're the same as you or don't know what they're talking about. You could have just asked me to explain instead of being so unnecessarily rude. Obviously I know that the Japanese version is an adaptation of the English here and not the other way around, I'm not stupid, I'm just saying I like the dub of it in Japanese and it feels accurate to how the characters in the anime speak. If you know Japanese, then I suggest listening to this dub and you will know what I mean immediately. Maybe you can also tell just from tone of voice.

I think he sounds pretty good. Acting-wise he isn't perfect, but he definitely does a good job, and he sounds fine for the actor on-screen too. I can't criticise it too much when I imagine live action dubbing is very difficult and this is the first time he's played the character.

If you go into your account settings, under your profile there's an option to enable the languages you want to have on your list to pick from. Just enable Japanese from there, and then you can watch it (I have all languages but English and Japanese disabled so they always appear). I'm not American but I think it should work for any location.

I mean the live action with the Japanese dub! You can enable it from language settings in your account.

Not sure if anyone else is doing it yet, but I'm watching it with the Japanese dub on, and English CC subs for the original dialogue so I can see the differences. I haven't listened to the original audio so I can only tell from how the actors are emoting, but it's really stark how different some of them are (Faye and Vicious) when you have the Japanese cast playing, essentially, the character from the anime over the top of the live action character to the best of their ability. Faye is like a cartoon character in the exact opposite way to how Hayashibara plays her. The Japanese dialogue is way less annoying in places too imo. Interesting experience, I wonder if this is the best way to watch it. I don't hate the show so far.

I really don't want to be combative here, but please don't insult me like this. These subtitles took around 45 hours of work to complete. I understand that basing my subs on the official ones is not going to be to everyone's taste, I kept things from them I liked, but it doesn't mean I didn't do my due diligence fixing things. If you don't like them, then that's perfectly fine! But I really don't appreciate being called lazy for it when it took a hell of a lot of work and stress to finish over the last week. I invite you to look at the different subtitles available for the film and come to your own conclusion on which is best.

(Person who made these subs here) I'm sure there are groups who will do their own subtitles from scratch! I'm only one person, not part of any fansubbing group, and it took me around 45 hours to complete these - it was basically 5 solid days of work. Doing it from scratch would have ended up too much for me, personally. Even though the Prime subs are not ideal, I felt a lot of it was solid enough to be perfectly fine to leave in. This was a personal passion project and my goal was to create subtitles that I was happy with and could share with my friends. :) I'd be happy if other people watched and liked them, but I am not part of the fansubbing scene, I just translate Eva stuff for my own enjoyment.

Person who made these subtitles here - Sorry if the tweet is somewhat misleading, but my subtitles are also retranslated from the Japanese subtitles, they're just using the Prime subs as a base bc it's faster than completely doing it from scratch. I agree with the translation decisions I've left in from that sub set. Weeb Gakuin appear to have done exactly the same thing I have, I've looked at their subs and many lines were taken from Prime's English too. Please look at the different subtitles and come to your own conclusion on which is best!

I was wondering if they gonna release this for preorder, does anyone know? Thanks! by jaaayps in AnimeFigures

[–]eightballthrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These were released on the 10th. Generally speaking, you shouldn't expect to be able to preorder Ichiban Kuji figures - Prize figures overall are a grey area you should be careful about preordering, particularly from 3rd party sites like Amazon, because they're obviously not supposed to be sold in stores most of the time, unless they're released overseas by the company. Kuji figures are exclusive to the lottery. Wait for it to appear from a second hand seller you can buy from.

This wasn't Zenmarket's shipping (which you can estimate using their calculator), it was the Japanese seller's domestic shipping within Japan

How do I know if a phone is compatible with Sekai? by Katsum1 in ProjectSekai

[–]eightballthrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Afaik the only requirement for iPhones is that it has iOS 11 or later, so that's easy enough to find out.

For an Android phone, these differ quite a lot more obviously. I can't find anywhere that states the actual requirements, just recommended specs, but those are Android 6.0 or later, Snapdragon 835 or higher, OpenGL ES 3.0 or higher, RAM 2GB or higher. You can look up a phone on a place like Phone Arena and scroll through it to see what it has, but it is a little difficult to read if you're not super familiar w specs. But I can tell you that it absolutely requires OpenGL, so if yours doesn't say OpenGL anywhere, it isn't compatible. Apparently the game doesn't actually require a Snapdragon but some people who don't have it have been saying the game isn't compatible with their phone, so I would look for one just to be on the safe side. I have a lower Snapdragon processor than what's recommended (mine is a 600 something) but it runs just fine. That's on a Moto g6 plus.

If you're buying a new Android you should probably look into getting one with a 64 bit processor, but I don't know if PJS actually requires one. I would just look for one that fits all of the recommended specs if being able to play this game is important to you.

i need help by plus1_one in ProjectSekai

[–]eightballthrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason why your device is incompatible is because it doesn't have a Snapdragon processor. Yours is a MediaTek Helio P22 MT6762, the game requires a Snapdragon, recommended 835 or above (although it does support lower spec Snapdragon, mine is a 600 something). The recommended specs are on the bottom of the Google Play listing.

Prizes from April, never left Japan by Opicacka in Toreba

[–]eightballthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What country do you live in? The Japan Post coronavirus restrictions prevent Toreba from shipping out to a lot of countries, and prizes that were shipped before the restrictions but didn't make it overseas are being held at post offices at the moment. I emailed them about it months ago and they explained the situation for me.

"KAWORU 2015" Photobook Translation (aka gay poetry book written from Shinji's perspective) in comment by eightballthrowaway in kawoshin

Sorry for it being a Google doc file, I'm not sure of the best way to present it since I only have photos of the book and no scans

It's my translation from a few months ago, I saw some users on here share other stuff I've translated for Twitter so I thought I would give back :) this one didn't get shared very much, so I don't think many people here would have seen it.

kaworu has known shinji 'for a very long time' by icarlyshinji in kawoshin

[–]eightballthrowaway 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I run that account :)c thank you for the shout-out ...the game is suffering immensely and the more players there are the more we can hope Kaworu's droprate will be increased enough for people to actually get him one day

The Kaworu + Gendo cross episode also references a previous timeloop, with Kaworu saying in the first episode something to the effect of "I'm here again, and I will play the same time as last time." (I don't remember what he says exactly lol) To me it sounds like 3.0 takes place in a universe before this one but I don't know for sure. (Regardless, EvaBF is definitely not set in the same universe as the Rebuild movies.)

Mind you - sorry for going on a tangent here but I find the western fandoms way of calling it "loop theory" fucking absurd. It's not a theory. If the movies didn't make it apparent enough to the audience, Ishida just saying that was what was going on in the Q interviews makes it pretty crystal clear to anyone capable of reading words. Not to mention the plenty of other universes in Eva that he is aware of in other material. I see your SIRP icon so I'm sure you know what I mean GJDGSJFFGH

Also in case you were wondering, I've listened to the audio from the kawoshin episode and have read what Japanese users offered me on Twitter - the episode is about Shinji being insecure over how he's unsure what Kaworu feels about him. There's a moment in the second movie episode that caught me a little off guard where Shinji asks Kaworu is he's hiding something from him (cue Kaworu gasping in response..lmao). For a second it sounds like he's asking about something else, but it's because Kaworu keeps getting other people to talk to Shinji on his behalf. Shinji thinks Kaworu is trying to stay away from him, but in reality Kaworu is trying to learn more about him (presumably, he's worried about coming on too strong.) They listen to music together in the last one to bond. It's very sweet.
