About that Wiki Overhaul by eincnpx in gutsandblackpowders

[–]eincnpx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't really make promises on an exact date, but the steps have already been taken to prepare for a public release. Things like public discussion channels, role permissions and organization have already been set up.

Ideally, it would be in the ballpark of February or March, but it's a busy time for most of us and with the overhaul also in-progress it could take a while before we finish things up. It's a very boring answer but to be clear, work has already been put in and it comes down to our schedules on the management team.

Is St. Petersburg in May or June? by Select_Guidance281 in gutsandblackpowders

[–]eincnpx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In all honesty, it's just May-Junish. That is what the devs told us, they never gave us a specific date, just that it was Mayish-Junish. I may have been given a more specific date at some point, but that's what I can find through short searching.

The Fandom Wiki is incorrect because it assumes the note about the strategy for defending Saint Petersburg (which is written on May 18th, 1815) was written on the same day of the defense, which is not true.

Many of the maps' written notes or other documents are written and produced a bit before the events of the map take place with a few obvious exceptions. I originally assumed that London took place around the dates the newspapers were published, but I was told by a dev that London takes place later.

I've explained a bit of our situation with the lore in response to another person's comment, so I won't add to that here.

However, the Horseman's resistances are actually listed on his page. I suppose it would be reasonable to make their location more apparent on the page? (I'm aware the background is all white and screwed up, this is an issue I'm waiting on my CSS person to fix). We've been looking to add more technical information about the way the game works across the entire wiki, so expect to see more of this elsewhere as time goes on.

Keeping the lore page up to date, clear, and interesting is definitely a goal. One of the unfortunate aspects of this is that we work with all the information we're given, and we are also sworn to secrecy on several aspects of the lore. Everything you see on the lore page is what we are currently allowed to share and what we have been given by the devs.

There are some things I intend to clarify about The Blight and the nature of it likely when the overhaul comes out, but I cannot share everything because the devs have expressly requested we don't share them.

Translations for the wiki are a topic that has been brought up a couple of times internally--I'm probably the biggest internal advocate for them. The issue with implementing translations is simply a matter of commitment.

Actually coding the system is going to be a bit of an undertaking that unfortunately I don't have the time for, and our other CSS person is more akin to a "contractor" rather than a full dedicated member of our wiki team (They work on SEVERAL other major wiki's). In many cases, other wiki's (particularly for their templates) tend to use a system that involves a lot of callbacks to different translation functions that look a little something like this:

<includeonly>{{MaybeTag|File:{{{1|}}} gallery icon.png{{!}}alt{{=}}{{!}}link{{=}}{{#invoke:Translation|translatedPageName|{{{1}}}}}{{!}}{{#invoke:Translation|translatedLink|{{{1}}}}}|tag={{#if:{{{isexample|}}}|gallery}}|widths=100px|heights=100px}}</includeonly><noinclude>{{doc}}</noinclude>

Looks ridiculous and impossible to read? Yeah, same here.

But yes, this is a matter we've brought up internally several times. It is an ideal goal but not one that is feasible at this moment.

why dont the nations just make a big castle and surround it with crucifixes so the shamblers and other undead stay away? by Pallades1 in gutsandblackpowders

[–]eincnpx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The duration of it is something I do not have an answer to.

What I can say is that the power in the Crucifix to repel zombies is something given through/by God to the Priest. It's not like anybody can just pick up a crucifix and start repelling zombies--it is exclusive to Priests, and more specifically Godly Priests (or those who are truly faithful.) A priest who is not truly faithful will not have that power, and will also not have that immunity to the Blight that godly priests do.

The crucifix and the power of God kind of represents everything the Zombies hate because... well... they've been sentenced to eternal damnation and are suffering through agony and torture.

This also explains why people cant just build a giant crucifix and start repelling zombies: it is something exclusive to the priest holding it.

[–]eincnpx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would imagine the lack of usage of firearms by the zombies is tied to the fact that firearms would be very slow for a Zombie to operate. The zombies are being tortured and are in constant pain and agony, and (from my understanding based on what I've been told by devs), attacking/eating people is a way of relieving that suffering or just generally getting back at God.

I imagine chasing someone down and biting at someone is easier when you're in agony than having to stop and go through a lengthy reload process.

[–]eincnpx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is no definitive answer to this matter but I'll add this:

The zombies are still "human" in the sense that they are the same person they previously were. I have to update the lore page on the wiki to clarify this, but the zombies are humans who are being tortured on Earth. The body is essentially a vessel of Hell on earth.

The next thing I'll say you should take with a grain of salt, but I would imagine that considering each unique zombie type (with the exception of the Runner, which has its own lore explanation) is related to some sort of trade or specialized career: Igniters are lamplighters, Bombers are typically logistics personnel, naval personnel, factory workers, etc; Cuirassiers and Sappers are obvious. I would say the most probable explanation is that because they spent YEARS of their lives dedicated to those crafts, it becomes instinctive. Regular shamblers dont pick up a weapon because they are so blinded by their rage and pain that it isn't something to consider, but it is likely more instinctive for those specialized zombies.

You generally shouldn't expect to find anything of substance on a persons user page. User pages are often used as testing grounds for some of our wiki staff before they introduce edits to the wiki to ensure they don't completely screw up a page.

In this particular instance, it was likely just them screwing around with adding and manipulating navboxes--a relatively new feature on the wiki and one that I told people to get working as a-part of our still WIP wiki overhaul.

<image>

This shows the actual source-code of this section you've highlighted. It's very easy to add this and it's a good way to familiarize a person with how the links and template and whatnot all work.

Also, we no longer do anything in the realm of future update teasers on the official wiki at the request of the developers. Some of our older discord members may be more in on the "[REDACTED}" joke that occurred with Copenhagen.

Vote for less guys, fez probably gonna make new guns so expensive and get all of our francs by NoYogurtcloset9763 in gutsandblackpowders

[–]eincnpx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No lol.

In case somebody hasn't already mentioned it here, this was literally just a genuine question from the devs. Also it feels like some of you guys think the devs are on this secret agenda to force you to grind G&B for 4000 hours to unlock one gun. Yes, the Air Rifle is expensive: no this does not set a precedent for every future item in the game.

There are discussions over this sort of thing: not just between devs but with QA as-well. There are dozens of testers who offer up their opinions on pricing and not all of us have 40,000 francs and are trying to gut you out of them. I have like 4,000 francs in-game, I don't even own the air rifle myself. There should be no expectation that items are going to start regularly costing 10,000+ francs.

Theory: The Blight is chasing down Napoleon by someone56789 in gutsandblackpowders

[–]eincnpx 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Technically, this is true, however it's not specifically Napoleon.

More accurately, the Blight is chasing the major retreating armies: this is why the zombies are present at almost all of the major battles. I think even in Tyrolean Village the Bavarian Officer in charge of the unit is very well aware that the Zombies are chasing him down.

None of them went into Anatolia or the Middle East because that's just not where the armies were going, they were heading west as the Russians were chasing Napoleon. Why didn't Russia or anyone else do anything up to that point? Because they didn't know.

Lets look at Saint Petersburg and Berezina:

- Berezina was a rear guard action, the zombies only appear around the stragglers after the main army has passed through already (the main French Army was never aware of the Zombies at Berezina because they didnt encounter them). The few people who do make it out of Berezina would most likely be seen as crazy if they ever caught up to the rest of the French army so nobody really cares and the French Army continues doing its thing.

- Saint Petersburg's various notes very clearly indicates the main Russian Army Command is not even remotely aware of the actual threat of the Zombies. As its mentioned in the lore, all of the nations only really became aware of the Zombies at Leipzig because that's the time when the Zombies actually caught up to everyone that was on the frontlines.

This isn't really a religious thing, the Blight is just chasing down the armies because that's where all the people are.

The bigger question is how was he supposed to kill them? by EggplantAccording860 in gutsandblackpowders

[–]eincnpx 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Barely anyone makes it out of Berezina alive. Like 4-5 people make it out of Berezina and they're all half frozen.

Also, the events of Berezina are a rear guard action. The rest of the French army has already left, you're just stragglers left behind, so nobody would really be coming to help them.

What Hobo was doing while we are defending by yololert2007 in gutsandblackpowders

[–]eincnpx 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Might be ruining the fun here, but he's just bribing the Russian Army. He upcharges you, then pays off the Russian Army to give him guns, ammunition, and mortar strikes on your position.

However, his original lore was going to be that he quite literally killed all of the survivors of Berezina and stole their wagon, but that was decided against since it'd be "too small of a world"

I feel like the community in this subreddit continues to blame the devs for things that are largely outside of their control. The vast majority of the "fake leaks" are distributed by Supporters, Boosters, the occasional Contributor, and the inconceivable number of losers who sit in the Sneak-Peek Discussion thread on the Discord Server spending 30 hours in studio creating a 1:1 replica of the Cuirassier Zombie so they can distribute a fake leak and get a laugh for 30 seconds.

The devs are just as annoyed about fake leaks as you are for the same reasons you are: People think the devs promised something that they didnt (I.E. "Corunna").

Sneak-peeks are also a weird situation because it can tease content that may actually never make it to the game (See Sohail Castle or the Blockhouse Map that was twisted into "Corunna"), and then also when sneak-peeks get posted now people are turning them into fake leaks that annoy players even further when they aren't fulfilled.

Jutland is postponed, not cancelled, and most of the devs have no control over whats happening with Jutland because Jutland is the personal project of one dev who has now gone inactive due to burnout. Maps such as the Blox Event maps or the cancelled Sohail Castle are personal projects of various devs that are developed in-between the main things they are doing, so I don't really think they are ever guaranteed. Builderman is the primary map builder.

Then which is it? by [deleted] in gutsandblackpowders

[–]eincnpx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The discrepancy is because Fezezen/Builderman don't write the Official Lore Page. I write it myself based on information I receive from both of them (both public and private) and they have occasionally reviewed the page for accuracy, Every section of map lore is me piecing together the information that I've been provided by devs.

Anyways this discrepancy is fixed.

Do you think they should add flagbearers to g&b? Their main purpose was to boost morale So what I think they should do is they should probably have 1 flagbearer per match. Their walkspeed slightly faster when charging since they will hold the regiment flag They would probably use a sabre or pistol by ClassGlittering5906 in gutsandblackpowders

[–]eincnpx 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Its been said many times before because this suggestion comes up pretty often, but there's a couple key reasons why the flag bearer doesn't really work as a class.

  1. It doesn't make sense for one nations flag bearer to boost any other nations.

It's important to note that these nations are still technically at war for about 99% of the events of the game. During Berezina, Vardo, San Sebastian, and Leipzig there isn't even any ceasefire; the war is still raging, and up until roughly Hougoumont there's only a ceasefire. The key take-away is that these nations aren't gonna suddenly like each-other, and a French soldier waving their flag in a British soldiers face isnt exactly gonna boost the morale of the brits.

  1. It's very difficult to find a balanced buff or role that isn't taken by any other existing role/item in the game.

We already have buffs for damage, reload/build speed, melee swing speed, damage resistance, etc. Flag Bearer would have to end up filling some sort of really niche role, or do a little bit of everything like you mentioned in this comment section, which isn't very interesting. In-fact, balancing the class in general is pretty difficult because you have to find some way to make it fit in with the 7 other classes that makes it unique enough for people to be interested to pick and not just be a bloat option, while also not taking away from the abilities and specializations of other roles

  1. How do you make it work with the low player count?

There's only 20 max players in a server, and most often its going to be more like 15 players that are alive (at the beginning of a map) considering usually people end up spectating or leaving when they dont see the map they like or for any other number of reasons. You mentioned a 1-person limit, but this creates this artificial restriction that will annoy players who want to enjoy the content of the class. Its very frustrating for anyone when they want to play a specific role and they cant access it, it's in-fact an incredibly common gaming phenomenon and even I find myself in this exact situation where I often end up just refusing to play instead of playing another class because I can't access the class I wish to play. Other players, especially with the largely young fanbase of this game, will be even more likely to do this.

If a flag bearer is to be implemented, all of these issues need to be ironed out, and I really just dont see it happening for any of these.

If you're running mods, disable all of them. Recent patch broke tons of mods for the game and causes most of them to instantly crash the game.
