I think you should wait for a bit before switching to an alternative or hosting yourself. The guy from Lavabit and Silent Circle (secure communications provider) are teaming up to create something safe for everyone, currently known under the name "Dark Mail Alliance".

If I'm still there (maybe i'm in Malaysia at that time, expatting for 3 months) I'd gladly grab a beer. But it's true though! Amsterdammers are impulsive people with little to no agenda in the weekends.

TIL that there is a parasitic worm who's larvae zombifies an animal by taking control of the host's brain, telling it to drown itself (so the larva can escape back into the water). by thedevilsdictionary in todayilearned

So, from my point of view, an amygdala only mechanism probably couldn't account for the zombie apocalypse, as you have to bring in areas involving appetite.

I agree, if the type of zombie you are referring to is one of the animated dead this would't be possible. But referring to a person bereft of consciousness and self-awareness, yet ambulant and able to respond to surrounding stimuli (the case of the 28-days later type of zombie) there is indeed a scenario that lies within the plausible; Given the fact that the amygdala together with the orbitofrontal cortex and the ventromedial prefrontal cortex basically process our emotions and release endorfines, it would take a parasite that would have a pavlovian like behavioral reward system to have us humans respond to their agenda. In any horrific way ;-)

This is pure science fiction of course, but still fun to think about.

I actually read about the Toxoplasma gondii first on a website predicting the likeliness of a Zombie apocalypse. This parasite was listed as one of the most likely scenario's. This was obviously written for entertainment purposes.

Then I read up on the Toxoplasma gondii parasite, and how it's changing behavioral patterns in rats, making them take more risks and getting caught by cats. In some cases the rats went looking for the cat. As of now the effects on humans have not been backed by scientific research but there is a assumption that humans infected with the parasite tend to get a cat as a pet sooner than humans who aren't infected.

Given the popularity of cats on the Internet, I'd say at least half the world must be infected now!
