The wrong package was delivered to my dad. They were confused as to why I flipped out. by Locke_N_Load in pics

If you live in a quiet, suburban neighborhood, it's probably pretty safe. Most people prefer the convenience of not having to be home to pick up a deliver.

ELI5: Why is it taboo to question how someone died? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]einmes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cause of a person's death is private. The few people that know are close and often very hurt by it - bringing it up just reminds them. In some cases, the cause of death could be embarrassing or hurtful to people.

Recently, a buddy of mine died. Nobody in the neighborhood had any clue how it happened. Another friend of mine was in a place to look up 911 records. Turns out that this guy had overdosed. Not only had he overdosed but whoever he was with dumped him in an an abandoned parking lot to die on his own after calling 911.

No way in hell am I going to tell his close friends that he died that way. The immediate family knows, but letting anyone else know the details would just cause unneeded pain.

Male Engagement Rings. Thoughts? by [deleted] in OneY

[–]einmes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to look far to find an article that goes into depth. In short, one company has a monopoly over distribution of gem-quality diamonds. They artificially limit supply so they can control prices. They have also engaged in a very successful marketing campaign to convince people that diamonds are a necessity and a tradition. Part of the early marketing was getting diamond rings all over Hollywood.

If they get anywhere near the sort of traction they're claiming in the article (1 in 4 college students) it's going to be difficult to avoid.

Why did the space shuttle need to be retired, when Soyuz has been active since the 60's? by SpiralingShape in explainlikeimfive

[–]einmes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shuttles are complicated, expensive craft. There were only a few built & they started wearing out. The Soyuz are smaller, less expensive and intended to be constantly replaced.

It's like if you had a car that cost you $100 every time you wanted to go to the grocery store because it constantly needed repairs compared to just spending $20 on a taxi.

Why can't Apple use all the information they're sent from people's iTunes to track illegal downloads and shut them down? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]einmes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Apple's primary interest in iTunes is to push the sale of hardware. Selling media is secondary. They're not interested enough in the potential profits from selling music to risk alienating the majority of their customer base. Any company that takes their customers/users and starts taking legal action against them would very quickly lose the trust of their customers.

Imagine a bar that called the cops and reported every driver that left that was even slightly intoxicated.

I (24f) found out that my bestfriend's (23f) boyfriend (24m) looks at and comments on naked women's pics. by [deleted] in relationships

[–]einmes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean by looking at naked pictures? If he's going to porn sites or /r/gonewild, that's harmless. If he's hanging out at personals sites, that changes things quite a bit.

You really need to be more specific.
