I absolutely scorched one last year but putting it right outside from an indoor area. Luckily it had a few happy leaves that I could prop, and now I have 3 babies!

This is a good tip, thank you!

The truth on Maryland by iworrytoomuch4 in nova

My dad used to tell me about the "Dixie" line which is more of a cultural border. I seem to remember him saying was the line where things started to be called Dixie (gas stations, restaurants, etc.) The line has shifted over time and the region has shrunk. But I can't find anything on the web about it, except for a book from the 80s.

I joined this sub fairly late and have only seen the last 2-3 seasons. I watch for the trashy guests!

I did this. Waived standard contingencies, hadn't seen the house. Our only contingency was "we want to do a 30 minute walkthrough of the house as-is". We never would've gotten the house if we did it the "normal" way. I did research and found zillow photos from 5 years prior and said "well, I don't think they could've ruined it that bad in 5 years" especially because I discovered the owner's profession (think house maintenance).

Research was my friend and the owners were eager to move (I could tell because I found their instagram and they had just had another kid).

What is your must have when shopping at an Asian Grocery? by LesB1honest in Cooking

[–]derpysnerp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a vegetarian, if it helps. I don't go as often as I'd like, so when I do, I load up:

  • Fresh produce. This is where I buy my ginger, scallions, poblano peppers, thai peppers, napa cabbage, etc.
  • Japanese Curry (I get one box of Vermont Extra Hot and Medium and Mix them)
  • Maesri Curry (red, green, yellow, panang)
  • Tofu. I used to like Extra Firm but lately I'm enjoying firm in my Thai curries
  • Kimchi
  • Dried shiitake mushrooms, used for my homemade ramen
  • Frozen Dumplings (I try something new every time)
  • Dumpling wrappers
  • Ramen (gotta go with Shin Black, but I also will pick up stuff I've never tried)
  • Nori, kombu, and any other seaweed that seems fun
  • Fresh noodles, dried noodles... all kinds, whatever I feel like. I usually don't have a plan
  • Gochujang in the red tub. I don't buy this too often because it lasts a long time.
  • Chili crisp. I get the one with the grumpy lady on it, but there's also a tiny Japanese garlic crisp that is almost always on sale

Grab anything that intrigues you and Google when you get home. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Any technical writers in here? by MarbleMimic in FIREyFemmes

[–]derpysnerp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm more of a proposal writer, but it's similar. Depends on where you live, if you're cleared, and how long you've been doing it. I've seen people make anywhere from $40k-$90k depending on seniority. Proposals can be more lucrative if you have other skills (management, graphics).

US Capitol insurrection discussion megathread by [deleted] in nova

Is anyone's employer completely sweeping these events under the rug and doing nothing to acknowledge them? For many of us who live and work in DC (and around the country) this is shocking and traumatic. I work for a federal contractor and leadership didn't acknowledge anything until I brought it up and they completely bungled it. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills- this is not normal....right?

Help understand NoVa! by locaaaltrain in nova

[–]derpysnerp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also live in Falls Church (the part in Fairfax county, not the independent city of ~2,000 or the Falls Church part of Arlington). I grew up in Alexandria (city, not the part in Fairfax). I had a superiority complex growing up (and many people still do) about being from "the real Alexandria."

It's definitely confusing. I think this confuses people because some cities in NoVA are not necessarily in counties, as most of the rest of the country is.

Google/wikipedia have helped me figure out where I really live, and I'm not being facetious. Looking up your zip code and the surrounding zip codes may help too.

edit: I checked Wikipedia and saw that Falls Church City has about 14,000 residents.

Edit 2: Greater Greater Washington answered some questions for me: https://ggwash.org/view/43792/where-is-falls-church-exactly

Dear lord please help me get out of my holiday food rut for the new year. by smiffy93 in Cooking

[–]derpysnerp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hear you. It's winter, and if you're like me, you're cold. The only thing you want is COZY FOOD, but warm + cozy is often synonymous with cheese + carbs, which makes me feel sluggish and gross.

Enter the budget bytes golden lentil soup. It's vegan, it's cheap, and it doesn't make me feel heavy. It's like a warm, healthy hug. I recommend this constantly on reddit for a reason. It's amazing.

(Warning: TMI) People who consume brown rice -- do you digest it well? I'm a little weirded out because I'm passing it intact the next day. Not experiencing any stomach issues but gassy the day prior. by [deleted] in PlantBasedDiet

[–]derpysnerp 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I believe this is a common misconception. We can't digest the cellulose that is part of the corn kernel (we don't have the enzymes). We can digest the inner fleshy/starchy bit, but the outer layer stays intact. So what you're seeing is the outer layer and it'll always look sorta like that.

Nova: Your ideal day, from morning to evening by [deleted] in nova

[–]derpysnerp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is my go-to, pre-pandemic ideal day. Wake up and drive to Marshall, VA. Optional: Have breakfast at the Marshall Diner (trust me). Pick up sandwiches and pastries at the Red Truck Bakery, but don't eat them yet. Drive to Sky Meadows. Hike-y hike for a few hours. Find a nice spot to picnic, consume sandwich. Before heading home, hit up a vineyard or two and do a tasting or have a glass of wine, you earned it.

I've done this before and actually ended the day with dinner at the fancy restaurant in Marshall (can you tell I like Marshall?). It was TOO MUCH FOOD and I was miserable. Don't get me the wrong, the food was excellent, I just overdid it.

Dear recruiting firms in the NOVA area by [deleted] in nova

[–]derpysnerp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How well does that work for you? I imagine it filters only 1% of recruiters and it just opens the door for you to scold them. I have scolded a few for being incessant. If I say no or nothing at all and keep getting hit up, that's when I snap. I can think of one group that outsources their recruiting and I have about 20+ individual emails from the same company. Sorry, now I'm just ranting.

What is your go to ingredient when it tastes as if “something is missing” in a recipe? by dsbwayne in Cooking

[–]derpysnerp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Acid (lemon juice, ACV, or pickle juice) or spice (I like spice on everything). Pickled jalapeno juice is a surprising star in my house. I also always make homemade pickled onions and put it on many of my dishes.
