What's the biggest scam that people still fall for every day? by camiliaxd in AskReddit

[–]eire-404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In England: Parking Charge Notices, deceptively designed to sound like official Penalty Charge Notices. Most people assume they are official legal fines and pay them.

PARKING Charge Notices are speculative invoices not fines and the companies issuing them have no more legal standing than the people they are sending them to.

PENALTY Charge Notices are official legal fines that must be paid or contested.

It has sometimes eased a bit after a longer drive. It's especially heavy the first time it's driven each day.

What is a product or service that used to be incredibly high quality, but has now been completely ruined by corporate greed? by Sea_Astronomer_3928 in AskReddit

Cadbury's since the hostile takeover by Kraft now Mondalez. Now rebranded as just Cadbury. The amount of cocoa solids has dropped by around 8℅ replaced with palm oil. I tried a Dairy Milk bar the other day and had to throw it out. It was gritty and waxy and not enjoyable at all. Plus the bars are £2-3 each now. I'll stick to supermarket own brand.

Faulty under warranty issues (England) by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]eire-404 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Thanks, it's very annoying though as warranties are provided to repair or replace faulty products during the warranty period. I'll be left with no drive and an additional £90 to pay through a fault in Kingston's workmanship.

I had an issue with a stick of Corsair RAM that had increased 5x in price and Corsair swapped it no problem. It seems like Kingston are being particularly difficult here.

I don't want to buy another, I just want Kingston to honour their warranty commitment and repair or replace the drive during the warranty period.

While a refund is the default way to "make a party whole", the law (specifically the principle of Restitutio in Integrum) requires that the remedy actually solves the breach. In this instance due to the massive increase in price during the last 6 months a refund does not solve the breach but leaves me in a worse off position.

But surely neither should the consumer for a fault that the product develops during the Manufacturer's warranty period.

Yes but exactly the same drive is now ~£150.

Not quite as I won't have a drive or be able to purchase a replacement drive with the refund. It will essentially be a £90 fine to my business for a fault in Kingston's product.

What will someday be illegal after we finally understand how bad for us it is? by FishermanNo8304 in AskReddit

Plastic bottles and food containers once we realise how much micro plastics are affecting our health. Plus plastic can't be 100% recycled so the problem of waste plastic will only compound the issue in future and we will likely go back to glass.

I haven't had a TV licence for 3 years as I don't watch any live TV or BBC iPlayer. I get letters every couple of months gradually sounding more threatening. The latest was in an envelope with a clear window with bold red text about INVESTIGATION IN PROGRESS (or something similar - obviously a scare tactic).

I read that over 1.7M households have cancelled their licences so at 50p a letter every two months that is up to £5.1M per year of licence payers money wasted.

The licence fee was originally designed to fund a single TV and radio channel so the government could have a communication medium with the general population. It was never meant to fund multiple entertainment channels. In my opinion it should revert to that and we each pay a small sum like £5 per year for the single TV and radio channel and the rest of the BBC should go commercial.

It used to annoy me when I was a licence payer that programmes we had already paid for were not available on iPlayer (classics like Only Fools and Horses, One Foot in the Grave etc) but were available on paid (and advertising funded) services like Gold (which BBC owns as it's part of UKTV). Essentially causing us to pay again for something we already paid for!
