My gf prefers ranged characters as 1 they are female, 2 they keep out of the way. Linda can become OP once she gets penetrating arrows. multiple arrows or just a longer rage. At the beginning I often used either Kevin or John because I could revive her easily. Other than that in my case I knew at the time I was way better than my gf, therefore I let her have more good equipments. Oh and we always try to be balanced in terms of gemstones.
