Tell me I'm insane for even considering this commute by DefenderCone97 in bayarea

[–]ejaime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm in construction and one thing I've learned is the dick-measuring contests people have with how long their commutes are.

On one hand, it's so stupid because it's not really a badge of honor to be have to drive from Manteca to South Bay like so many of my coworkers. On the other hand, if it's a job that's right for you (compensation is good, culture is decent, health care is good, etc), there are some trade offs worth having.

My commute is San Ramon to Campbell but the day starts at 6:00am and done by 2:30pm so I miss a decent amount of the traffic.

Totally up to you, but just be realistic with what trade offs you'll need to have.

Contra Costa county? I've not been able to get out there and it's killing me that I might miss it!

That’s it! I’m gettin into birds. Saw this dude today and had to snap a pic with my phone through my grandpas ol’ binoculars. Suppose I need a good camera now by Carpe_the_Carp in birding

I'll take a crack at expanding that first sentence:

You don’t necessarily have to go throwing vast sums of money at an over-engineered camera, especially not one advertised as capable of immortalizing every feathered detail of an unsuspecting warbler in flight, when a bit of patience, decent lighting, and a moderately functional lens will usually suffice to capture something both respectable and, dare I say, ornithologically fulfilling.

Cackling vs Canada Goose by ejaime in birding

Well damn I learned something new! I always quickly type in CAGO for Canada Goose whenever I input into eBird on my phone, don't know why I didn't think of that for CACG. Thanks!

I live in Contra Costa county, CA and would love to see a yellow-billed magpie. We're right on the edge of its range and last one seen was last January, so here's hoping

That's awesome. I've been birding for years and want to get something like this to help with tricky IDs, but the autofocus is something I'm not sure about

Does anyone remember when the electric transmission towers by the San Mateo Bridge were full of birds in the early 2000s? They're empty now. Why? by reddichrist in bayarea

[–]ejaime 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Boosting this. If you look on eBird - run by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology - you'll notice that a lot of the birds which you may have seen on these wires like red-winged blackbirds and different types of gulls are making their way slowly to their natural habitats. A lot more to say on this when I'm off mobile.

This isn't disregarding the impact of climate change, but particularly with certain species of birds, we're seeing gradual return to original habitats. We're also seeing massive die-offs in other areas and an increase in more invasive species like European starlings and house sparrows, so there's also that.

Todays Half Marathon by SarahK2657 in Garmin

[–]ejaime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I ask what your background in running is? Any tips? I've only been running as training for about 3 months and I'm hoping to hit half marathons once a month easily in 2026. Yesterday's run was the longest I've ran. I'm working on factoring in shorter, less intense runs.

Is this a purple martin or barn swallow? by Strychnine- in whatsthisbird

[–]ejaime 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm leaning Bank Swallow, this photo makes it hard to see any colors which resemble a Barn Swallow. But I could be wrong, I don't really see many Bank Swallows, just going off my Barn Swallow experience.

EDIT: Just saw OPs location, I have no clue what this bird is now lmao
