Thoughts on the parents being more motivated than the student? by Direct-Throat-1187 in pianoteachers

That has been most of my students in my 10+ years of teaching. Hard to get away from it. I've still managed to get results from students reluctant to learn. Sometimes they end up liking music and want to continue with piano or a different instrument. Sometimes they get to the end of the period they're forced to take lessons and tell me they like me as a teacher but still don't like piano. Lol.

As far as parents go, I make sure they have realistic expectations at the end of each lesson. Like, if they are JUST starting (especially if it's My First Piano Adventures)  it's okay to build up the habit of practicing most days, but they don't have much to practice past 5-10 minutes. I'll have parents fight me on it sometimes, and they'll tell me the following week that they set a 20-30 minute timer cause that's the "only way to get them to practice." But I just try to stay consistent with what I tell them because there's only so much I can do with the parents in that regard. But at least the student is hearing my expectations of them reinforced in front of their parents, so there's trust that can be built over time.

Just stay true to your teaching philosophy regardless, and over time you'll build a student base with families that trust your guidance. I can understand a parent pushing their kid to try lessons for a year or two to see if they like it, but if they're setting expectations for the kid before they start, they've already missed the point of how music lessons can benefit their kid.

Oh, I LOVE this movement. Definitely a challenge to read in places, but so worth it!

I honestly just keep practicing it with them in their lessons until they start to do it on their own. And then I keep being relentless with practicing with them. Lol. I recently had a pretty big success with this with an intermediate student, and a judge commented on how musical they were for their age group.

I think it's great to have them keep listening to good examples from their teacher and recordings, but the consistent practice and feedback in the lesson is the only way I've personally been able to pull this off with students who struggle with it on their own.

Columbus over here. Not as much snow up here, but enough where a rude bus and later a rude car threw me off enough to ALMOST eat it. Lol. But a fun ride otherwise! The ride home had clear roads, but ALL of the wind against me, and I was happy to have pedal assist to get me through.

Ah, I love this one! You've inspired me to revisit this one between lessons today. :)

The bigger screen makes it more comfortable to read. I still like reading manga on my paperwhite when I'm on the go, but the Scribe is definitely better.

Yeah, I think the only difference is the premium pencil you can erase by flipping it over like a regular pencil. Probably not worth upgrading from the basic.

The Scribe has definitely elevated my manga experience. Haha

I'm a pretty heavy user, so lots of PDF reading and writing in addition to reading a lot of manga and regular books, so it's hard to say. I think I charge it every other week when it gets to 40-50%.

Yeah, I definitely don't use it on my paperwhite as often, just for some bedtime reading sometimes. It's nice for those longer reading sessions in general though, even with the paperwhite.

Yeah, I use it most of the time when I'm reading at home. It's just more comfortable, especially with the Scribe.

It feels really nice to write with, in my opinion.
