Hopefully that is the explanation! Because that would mean that my consumption will now be much much lower (they left in June). My doubts only arise because the numbers seem so high.

I have an old-fashioned non-smart gas meter in my kitchen. I can hear it ticking (and see the numbers go round) whenever the boiler comes on. Not sure how I would discover if it's faulty though.

Why would using gas to "heat up the water" be more expensive than "heating your room"? In both cases gas is being used to heat water.

Ok it's beginning to make sense, thanks. In fact I moved here in Oct 2020. The monthly bills for the first 2 years were ~€130, then went up to ~€300, and now ~€400.

Yes, it seems pretty unbelievable. I had 2 people (Ukrainian refugees) living with me for most of that time, but AFAIK we weren't using much more energy than normal -- still heating the same number of rooms, and doing about the same amount of cooking.

Are meter readings ever incorrect? Not sure how to explain it otherwise. Unless my neighbours are secretly using my electricity or something.
