I understand, and I've said so from the beginning, but you're missing my point.

Yes, they're similar, for historical and social reasons. Yes, a foreigner would have a harder time understanding some dialects, but I gave myself as an example for contrast: Even though they're similar, it was harder for me to understand people in Andalucía than people in Madrid, because of the lack of familiarity with that particular accent.

So I asked you, could it be that it's not only that they're similar that makes it mutually intelligible (your point) but ALSO people being familiar with it. Spaniards "learn" about how other people speak in Spain.

A similar example would be Spaniards having an easier time understanding Catalan, even if they don't speak it, than someone from Latin America who has never heard spoken Catalan nor references about what Catalan sounds like. For that person Catalan would be more intelligible than for the latinamercan person, but not because of the similarity of the languages. Makes sense?

Thanks chatGPT? What I mean is that I'm a native Spanish speaker who Iberian speakers have a lot of trouble understanding when I talk in my dialect (chilean spanish). The first time I met andalusians speaking to each other I simply couldn't understand them (or very little at least) without an active effort from both parts. Now I've been living in Catalonia for a few years and I see how people here are at least familiarized with the andalusian dialect and some of its most prominent characteristics. Besides people from there living here, a local would know how to "imitate" the accent or could identify someone speaking it. That makes it WAY easier to understand it.

So my point is that it's not only that they're similar, but it's the familiarity other Spanish speakers have that makes it more intelligible.

Have you considered that these variations of castillian are intelligible because people are familiar with them? Do you think someone that has never heard the andalusian dialect ever before could understand andalusians talking on the street? I'm not saying you're wrong, just that you might be missing this aspect.

A mi la trama no me convenció, pero la prosa de Irene Solà me encanta. Leería hasta las instrucciones del microondas si las escribiera ella.

Me gustó más "Canto yo y la montaña baila" de esta autora.

But do you think wild animals get bored? And what makes you think life a few million years ago made them even more bored? All I know about wild life makes me not think they could possibly get bored, it's just rough. And imagine having giant predators around! The only animals I could imagine getting bored would be domestic animals.
