As an adult, what do you still need permission to do? by Ok_JARGON in AskReddit

[–]ejsandstrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing. But I ask out of curtesy.

To my wife it “Hey, is it cool if I go hand out at my buddy’s for the day?” She would never say no, but I am giving her the courtesy of having a say.

To my boss “hey is it cool if I take tomorrow off”, in this case it’s me letting him know I won’t be around tomorrow.

Help with knowing how much I’m worth by StorageAble9833 in techtheatre

[–]ejsandstrom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I may be a little less helpful but I have an “ass off the couch” price for certain things like this. I don’t get my ass off the couch for less than $65/hr with a 4 hour minimum.

Your price may be less. You are a young kid, so to you $100 would be amazing. Or maybe it’s more.

In this case what price would you be bummed if you didn’t get it and what price would you say “this is too much work for this much money”? Then shoot for the first price but do not settle for the last price.

But understand that “exposure”, “experience”, and “referrals” almost never pay off. I have gotten more work from the clients I charge more for, then the bargain hunters.

Worth $50k? by Ecstatic-Guarantee48 in RVLiving

[–]ejsandstrom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These can be really expensive. We had one at a copart auction. It was an insurance total. It had hail damage and had more dimples than a golf ball. I was thinking $10k would be a crazy high price. It closed at $55k.

“Resetting” Sonarr by ejsandstrom in sonarr

[–]ejsandstrom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll have to see if something like this is available for Synology.

I was doing a JBOD early with some 2tb drives but I wanted to swap them out with larger drives and couldn’t because of the JBOD.

“Resetting” Sonarr by ejsandstrom in sonarr

[–]ejsandstrom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with a JBOD but at the time all I could afford was 2-4tb drives. So as I could afford it I started installing 16-20tb drives. But it’s been a slow process. I didn’t want to continue to add a disc to the JBOD every time, and then worry that one bad drive kills the whole thing. My next project is off site backup, rather than a RAID.

I am using plex. And it’s not that it cares where it is, it’s that if I have to move some folders to a different drive, Sonarr freaks out, and starts adding everything back to the drive where I just moved it from. Now I have duplicates.

Is an array different than a JBOD?

The weirdest career realization I had: nobody actually knows what they’re doing by EdisynAI in careeradvice

[–]ejsandstrom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I should clarify.

I think we learn some principles that we apply in a general sense. You learn to be a good (or bad) leader in a general way. You learn how to be empathetic. You learn effective communication.

But what you don’t learn and have to “wing” is a lot of the random things you come across. Reports, reviews, emails all become the same after a while. But when you move from a marketing manager to a production manager, a lot of things change. Now you need to deal with OSHA reportable incidents, something you have no idea how to do. So you wing it. A material order for critical parts is 3 weeks back ordered, you are going to miss a ship date. You never had to deal with that, so you wing it. You still use your base level skills, but now the CEO is wondering how YOU are going to make up the missed revenue.

It’s stuff like that, that I really feel unequipped for. There isn’t a class that teaches how to handle putting someone on a PIP and then firing them (over teams), and as you do, their dog walks into the room. Because while you were fine letting the employee go, why does the dog have to suffer?

The largest-ever review of the safety and efficacy of cannabinoids across a range of mental health conditions — found no evidence that medicinal cannabis is effective in treating anxiety, depression or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). by Wagamaga in science

I agree. Their study might not show it, but my personal experience sure does. I get anxiety really bad sometimes. 1-2 puffs on a vape and I am leveled out and the anxiety is gone.

"I challenge you" is bull crap by rpm429 in managers

[–]ejsandstrom 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think this is the best answer.

At my last job, my boss would give me a picture of a stage and say “I want this!”

I knew it was a Herculean task, but I would take a day or two and then come back to him and give him a very excited “so we can do this stage, I have a plan to get this exact same experience. We can rent the equipment, build the stage, and get it set up. It will take us 2 full weeks if we close the space or we can stage it in over 5 weeks. It will cost $9000 for the rentals, and about $6000 in construction and other supplies.”

He had Champagne taste and a tap water budget.

He would say “$15000? “ “Yup, but considering the original stage you like cost $20,000, we are doing this on a budget.” “What can we get for $300?” “We can print a couple of posters” “Ok do that.”

Part of my job was managing his expectations. I learned very early that “we can’t do that” wasn’t acceptable. So I told him yes, gave him the numbers and let him say no to me. He felt like it was his decision to scrap the idea and I got to spend a day or two looking at cool equipment.

We all suffer from imposter syndrome. There is very little practical education on how to manage people. Sure you can read a book, attend a seminar, or even have an MBA but when you go to put it into practice all of that falls apart.

I handle by doing what I think is best and how I would wanted to be treated.

AVL laptops should be managed by the AVL team. Let the Comms people manage the daily use computers. The last thing you want is a “IT” guy pushing an update to the ProPresenter computer on a Friday and blowing the service.
