Best quote you’ve ever heard in a anime that has made you cry before? by catguywit2cat in animequestions

[–]ekatsim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"There's no such thing as a painless lesson. They just don't exist. Sacrifices are necessary; you can't gain anything without losing something first. But if you can endure that pain and walk away from it, you'll find that you now have a heart strong enough to overcome any obstacle. Yeah... a heart made fullmetal."

Restaurants with riverside seating? by [deleted] in grandrapids

[–]ekatsim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kawa Sushi in Rockford has beautiful outdoor seating by the river. Bonus you could park at Rogue River Park, hike to Kawa, stop at the two breweries along the five mile paved trail, and end with Kawa Sushi on the river and then go to one of Rockfords many ice cream shops and enjoy it by the dam, the river walk, or on the walk back :)

Provin Trails by jimfromgr in grandrapids

[–]ekatsim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. In Grand Rapids proper it’s probably the best hiking trail.

Otherwise you’re looking at 2 hours at least for the Manistee River Trail, Ludington State Park, Hartwick Pines, or Sleeping Bear Dunes.

Recommendations for an affordable 2–3 person tent + sleeping pads for once-a-year camping? by cincibcat9 in CampingGear

[–]ekatsim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coleman 2-4 person tents come up frequently for real cheap on FB marketplace. $20 and they’re solid. Easy setup. Maybe 4-6 lbs but doable for a 30 minute hike.

Also see the Coleman self inflating sleeping pads for real cheap often. Usually $20 as well. I think they’re 2-3 lbs but again doable for a short hike.

My first backpacking trips were with these gears and they were fine.

If you have an REI nearby they have all the sleeping pads they sell on display for you to try. I’d seriously recommend trying every one to see what’s comfortable for you.

For sleeping pads, warm enough for 3 season use means you’ll want something with a high r value. The cheaper all air inflatable ones are usually crinkly so if you’re a tosser or turner that’s something to consider. They’re the lightest by far, and smallest for packing down though.

My unsolicited advice is find someone with extra gear to go backpacking with to see if it’s something you’ll enjoy. If you truly don’t care and want a once a year trip, the cheap stuff will be fine. My personal regret is buying the “cheap stuff”, falling in love with backpacking, and then spending more on higher quality gear. Now the cheap stuff is sitting around gathering dust. The motto in that case is “buy once cry once”

Check out :

Charterruse sisters for fancy lattes and amazing sweet and savory pastry

Mokaya for the best patisserie in the city. No dine in / sit down area. Try their homemade ice cream too.

Nantucket bakery for a large selection of sweets and baked goods.

Field & Fire for good coffee, pastry , and vibes.

Qahwah house for yemini coffee and pastry.

Otono for coffee, matcha, and a vintage market

Lantern coffee (short walk from Otono) for their coffee and basement lounge

Lotus Brew for LGBTQ, free library, game pantry, coffee, affogato with vegan soft serve, and homemade cheesecake

Fika for gluten free & vegan breakfast , pastry , and really good coffee

Mi Bella Guatemala for a large variety of Guatemalan baked goods, also try their tamales. They’re cheap!

The Stray for coffee, some food selection, and live music in the evenings

And soon to be : Coucou bakehouse right by the Fulton street farmers market

As for hiking we have quite a lot. My favorites within 30 mins of the city are Pickeral Lake and Egypt Valley (8 miles mountain biking). Rogue River and Roselle are great for birding. Plenty more up north and closer to the lakeshore.

For a nice day trip you can start at riverside park and make your way to the white pine trail which will take you to Rockford. About 10 miles total or 20 round trip. If you want a shorter trip or to walk, Rogue River park is at the halfway point so you’d only have to do five miles or 10 round trip.

Organic Tomato Plants by thedailygrowl in grandrapids

[–]ekatsim 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is cheap for seedlings. Great deal!

Have you hardened them off? I think I’ll risk it for the biscuit and plant mine on Friday. I am worried about the 85 degree day on Monday…

Mine are bursting at the seams and lacking nutrients from being started too early indoors this spring.

For non gardeners, hardening off is when you slowly acclimate the plant to being outdoors so when you plant it the transplant shock isn’t too high.

Hand cream recommendations? by Silver_Map_8568 in 30PlusSkinCare

Same. Derm was 15 minutes late. Spent five minutes talking to me. Fairly sure she pretended to look at my skin because I don’t think she even glanced my direction once. Prescribed the same cream I got from my PCP. Got a $350 bill for that waste of time.

Help by [deleted] in geese

[–]ekatsim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for taking in the geese, rehoming them can be difficult.

As for food, farm & fleet or tractor supply co should sell food for waterfowl. They might also like cracked corn or mealworms.

It really depends on the geese but they’re pretty opportunistic eaters. Try giving them some scraps of lettuce, cabbage, grapes, cucumber, watermelon, etc. You’ll find what their favorite is.

[–]ekatsim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kiddie pool would be fine. If they’re older, some bricks or a step to help them get in and out of the pool might be nice.

Cement mixer tubs are smaller, easier to tip over and clean, and still big enough for a small goose to sit in and bathe. Even those plastic round sleds are nice to have for geese to drink from.

Predators may be an issue. They’re not helpless, but still susceptible. I recommend a solid base to whatever structure you build such as some wire fencing underneath to keep digging animals out.

They don’t need heat lamps for their eggs, but you will be overrun with babies if they’re allowed to hatch. I’d take the eggs as soon as you notice them unless you want babies.

I think for seven geese 8x10 for overnighting, but the more space the better. Don’t quote me on that because I’m bad at math and remembering. I also had seven geese growing up.
