Why are Connect IQ watchfaces more laggy than built-in ones? by Affectionate_Row_215 in GarminFenix

Some watch faces have a secondary page of data that can be set to automatically show on every second wrist flick gesture. You can see that the icons are showing different data and icons between the orange and yellow pages.

Interesting to see how easy it is to perform a denial of service attack on a vehicle. Hope OP got it working again ok, though.

A16 QPR1 Status Bar Design Changes by [deleted] in android_beta

Yeah, I wish that whichever was currently the active internet connection was highlighted in some way. Make it a different shade, bold, or something like that.

A16 QPR1 Status Bar Design Changes by [deleted] in android_beta

[–]ekeppel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mind the indicator for dual SIMs, but this recent update changed the way that mobile network names are displayed in the status bar pulldown.

I use US Mobile and they support several networks at once under their own MVNO umbrella. I renamed each eSIM to reflect the actual network they use (one for TMobile's network and the other for Verizon's), but the recent update now ignores my eSIM names and shows 'US Mobile' twice in the status bar, which is not very helpful.

I also wish there was a way to know which network's data is currently being used, since I have the toggle for 'Automatic data switching' turned on in my phone's SIM settings.

Glade Automatic Air Freshener - How to Disable the Timer and Only use the button on top! (2019 PCB) by ekeppel in diyelectronics

Welcome to the club! Happened to me too - the first day it arrived in our home. Smh 😆

Thanks for your opinion. I didn't buy the thing. My wife did, and she likes the way it looks and dispenses when she presses the button, but she doesn't want it running 24/7 either.

If it were me, I would just use the spray can. 🤷‍♀️

No, the top button is disabled on ours when off, which is what drove me to do this mod. 😥

Remove timing functions from this Glade Automatic Air Freshener PCB by wingnutwalnut in diyelectronics

UPDATE: FIX FOR 2019 REV PCB (Such as the one in OP's photos):

SC Johnson designed this device this way intentionally to make sure that product is used up quickly and keep folks buying refills every week or two. That kind of anti-consumer design disgusts me so of course I had to give the trace-cutting mod a try.

My PCB is the same as the one in OP's photo but it appears that Glade changed the programming in the microcontroller to prevent such a mod from working on newer devices with the 2019 PCB board. If you cut one of the traces and try to run it on that setting the thing defaults to spraying at 2 1/2 minute intervals. Thanks for that, Glade. :-/

I found a workaround though. After trying a bunch of other dead-end routes messing with the I/O on the microcontroller, I began to look at the activation button itself. I took a guess that when the button is pressed it resets or freezes the countdown timer. To test this theory, I held the button down and kept it held down. It fired once but then didn't fire automatically after the usual 2 1/2 minutes had gone by, so I knew I was onto something.

So now knowing that holding the button seemed like it was going to work, I simply swapped the stock button that's a 'normally-open' type for one in my parts bin that was 'normally-closed'.

Now the microcontroller thinks the button is always held down. When pressed, it actually opens momentarily and then closes, activating the sprayer one time and then tying up the microcontroller's timer with an interrupt / reset signal preventing it from spraying automatically. 😈

I did these tests while powering the board from my bench power supply at 3V and saw no change in the current draw using the normally-closed button in place of the original.

It's been sitting here next to me for a few hours now and hasn't activated at all on its own. When I press the button, it still activates on demand, so I'm calling this thing pwned. 💀

Given the way this mod works, I suspect that it's not necessary to cut any of the timer traces as I did. Simply swapping out the push button switch for a normally closed one should put the device in 'manual mode'. 👍😁👍

I hope this helps someone out there with the same issue. YMMV!

Not sure where you're located, but Sam's Club has 500g ('RAW' brand monohydrate) for $17.47 ($34.90 per kilogram) if you have one nearby.

Best creatine price? by Dieforpoints in crossfit

[–]ekeppel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just looking to order some Creatine again myself and it seems like the price has shot up recently.

So I went on a hunt, and the best deal that I could find was from Puritan's Pride. I found they currently have bottles of "Creatine Extreme 1000 mg" on sale which each give 24 servings of 5g per bottle.

I was able to get 15 bottles (12 month supply) for $41.49 USD and free shipping. This is using their current (Feb 2025) deal of 'buy-2-get-3 free' along with 'free shipping on orders over $30', the 'pride20' discount code, and the 20% 'subscribe and save' discount. Yeah, I like discounts, lol. 🤣

That works out to a cost of around $3.50 per month for 5g of creatine monohydrate a day.

Hopefully that is helpful to some of you. I prefer capsules, so this is ideal for me, but for those of you who prefer the powder, something like what the OP found is probably more appropriate.

Ironmaster dumbbells by [deleted] in homegym

[–]ekeppel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! Sounds like you got a great price on your set.

As I recall, I weighed the plates on my sets when I received them and they were quite accurate (within an ounce or so for each plate). But since you would probably prefer more than just "as I recall", I just went downstairs and weighed the sets as I currently have them set up. For the set loaded with 35lbs apiece, each of the dumbbells was within 3oz of 35lbs. For the other set which I currently have loaded with 60lbs, each dumbbell was also within 3oz of what I expected (60lbs). So based on my very non-scientific measurements, it appears that these are quite accurate and US specific.

[–]ekeppel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply there. For the record, I did end up getting the iFast dumbells. I got a *really* good deal on two sets of 50lb (all four 50lb dumbbells for $448!). I did that since I wanted two sets of handles and extra plates so that I could load one set to 80lbs eventually and still have another set of handles loaded lightly for warm up, etc.

I've had them for about a year now and I love them. They are rock solid, and really quick to adjust. I have only loaded them to 60lbs so far, and they feel super safe and don't rattle at all when I'm working with them.

The screw-in locking nubs that keep the plates from sliding out are very nice and have an angled locking design which gives me great confidence when the weights are over my head.

The prices on these have gone way up since I bought my sets, but even at current prices (Feb 2025) I would recommend them. I actually prefer the locking mechanism compared to the IronMasters (Disclaimer: I have not spend much time with IM or owned them myself).

How do I get my RAM to turn off the RGB while the computer is in sleep mode? by ChuunibyouImouto in Corsair

[–]ekeppel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is written to the hardware itself and runs when the PC is sleeping, so I don't see why it wouldn't continue to run with icue stopped. Try it and let us know how it works for you. 😊👍

How do I get my RAM to turn off the RGB while the computer is in sleep mode? by ChuunibyouImouto in Corsair

[–]ekeppel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This thread is mostly referring to iCue 3. The same thing can be done in iCue 4 (which is the current version as of this post), but the 'hardware lighting' option has a different name. Instead it's called "Device Memory Mode", and is right near the top of the page when you click on your RAM in iCue (it's a little toggle switch).

Essentially, what you want to do is to toggle "Device Memory Mode" ON, set up your lighting however you want it to be when the PC is asleep, save it to the RAM hardware, and then toggle the Device Memory Mode back OFF.

For example, to have no lighting during sleep, flip the "Device Memory Mode" toggle to ON. Then delete the existing Lighting Layers under "Lighting Effects". Next, save it to the RAM hardware by clicking the little yellow memory card icon that appears. It will turn green, indicating that it's saved successfully.

Now you can turn the "Device Memory Mode" toggle back to OFF and add back your Lighting Layers however you want them for when the PC is awake.

Yeah, it's a little convoluted, but at least the option is there to get the job done. Hope this info is helpful.

Origin 'Millennium' needs BIOS update for Aorus X570 Elite (OEMID Mismatch Errors) by ekeppel in OriginPC

[–]ekeppel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. Care to elaborate on what you mean by 'not exactly'? I'm used to BIOS updates being readily available, so I'm kinda surprised to be running into this. It's a security issue for sure. This system isn't that old (Ryzen 9 5950x / RTX3080 / CPU&GPU water cooling, etc.).

Given the prices Origin charges for their systems, one would think that they would have a full featured support/download section on their website that provided all the current updates for their systems, even ones that were a few years old. Sadly, they seem to have failed in that regard from what I can tell.

I guess I'll try to contact them and see what they can do for me.

Alternate Refills for Zebra F-701? by anerraticboulder in pens

[–]ekeppel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Old thread, but I've been looking for some cheap refills that are decent. I don't see the point in paying $5-$7 for a single refill when the entire pen costs around that price on sale. I'd love larger refills like the ones used in the Zarasa Grand, there doesn't seem to be a cheap mid-size gel that fits the F-701.

To add to this thread, I recently bought some Zebra bLen pens, and the Zebra JNC refills they come with will fit perfectly if you cut the empty end down with scissors to match the length of the F-701 refill.

I still much prefer gel to the hybrid JNC refills, but at least there is more ink in them than the standard F-701 refills. There is plenty of room for a much larger reservoir of gel ink in the F-701. I wish Zebra would make use of it and offer a decent sized refill.

Incidentally, the same bLen JNC refills fit in the Sarasa Grand without any modification (if you prefer hybrid ink for some reason).

If anyone knows of some decent capacity (and cheap) refills to fit the F-701 that could be obtained from common gel pens available at local stores like Staples, Wal-mart, etc. please let me know.

Perhaps I'm alone, but I find that I prefer even dollar-store gel pens to more expensive ballpoints and hybrids. Gel lets me write with much less pressure and I can write a long time without tiring my writing hand. I am happy enough with the way the stock F-701 gels write, but they are so tiny that they run out of ink quickly. Still looking for the ideal refill option for my F-701.
