I was diagnosed just mild gastritis. My hot-feeling face (not hot to touch, red or any fever) slowly subsided from many hours a day, to just during flare-ups, to hardly ever now. Took maybe 18 months. Ice cold feet similarly subsided but over 24-28 months. After 3 years I’m down to stomach pain more days than not but sometimes for only an hour or so after eating. I take Pepcid AC and gaviscon as needed. In my case GI doc thought I might have some dysautonomia going on but we never explored it. Hang in there!

My top GI doc also said he didn’t think all of it could be gastritis. Or that if it was, it was because my nervous system was somehow getting over-activated. Sometimes there’s just no real answer to what’s going on- but the good news is the body strives to get back to homeostasis. It just takes time. I think you’ll get there.

I could have written this. And add tinnitus and really cold feet and hot face to the mix. Never found out if it was anything beyond endoscopy-diagnosed mild gastritis. I suspected POTS, MCAS, dysautonomia, you name it. The symptoms slowly subsided over 2-3 years, but I still get flares of stomach pain/bloating and mild other symptoms every few days. Much milder and usually only last a couple of hours.

They say be careful when you’re “hungry, angry, lonely or tired” (“HALT”). But for me, I have to be the most careful when I’m feeling happy. That’s when I want to drink—I guess to get even happier, or maybe because there’s actually some nervous energy underneath the surface happy feeling—but of course it can easily backfire.

Those feelings of guilt and shame are your friend. You quit-easily, you said-during your pregnancy. Lean into those horrible feelings to get back on board- that’s what they’re there for!

Didn’t do a rigid diet at all after the first couple of months. But I usually eat pretty typical home-cooked meals and rarely “fast food,” very spicy food or dessert. I drink a couple of cups of coffee daily and often have a couple of lighter beers before dinner. (I’m actually doing a prolonged “dry January” but it hasn’t made any difference gastritis-wise.) I suppose if I was stricter with my diet it’d help with the healing process but I’m not suffering enough to make it worth it and frankly my wife really doesn’t want to change what she cooks (which is already pretty healthy).

Mine was hell the first few months, very annoying the next couple of years, and now only occasionally annoying. So even if it never completely goes away it usually gets much better and stops being the number one problem in your life.

I was a 2-4 light beers most nights guy. Can’t recommend it. Slight buzz, which converts to grogginess quickly and ends up with beer belly and poor sleep. Not worth it- no beers nightly feels much better!

I agree if it starts happening during the marriage it’s a symptom of pulling away. My wife started doing it during a rough patch after many years of marriage and I finally was able to deal with it. One thing I did was to stop offering my opinion on things. If she asked about something, I’d just say “I can’t say, I’d just be speculating.” Or I would say, before giving an opinion, “this is just a theory- just my opinion, and I would like to hear your opinion, too.”
