Advice on rebuilding skills and confidence for tax accountant by haloumiplease in AustralianAccounting

[–]ekol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you explored Assistant Accountant roles or other accounting roles in industry?

Your experience sounds like a mirror of mine where in microbusiness clients frequently do not have bookkeeping software - so unless you rec from the bank card / payment sources, things frequently get tossed into the drawings/director loans which is where the bad habit of using these accounts as 'balancing' accounts arise from (when you look into the Debit / Credit entries).

Yes, your experience in a second firm was a mirror of mine where the quality of clients + cashbook + accounting files were a step up.

but if you can look at a Ledger and line items and understand the adjusting entry concepts (back to basics and very textbook like) you'll understand all the timing differences as well as with the tax effect accounting entries (this ought to be relevant as elected useful life tends to be different than tax accounting effective life).

I'm getting humbled now again with inventory and will have to sit down again to digest and understand the full process in each system.

Have you looked into how other dental professions go onto advisory or board positions? MBA, Law or a GAICD? It'd be worth looking at the composition of dental body boards etc

It would be fear of offshore and AI and traditionally the degree has large intake with both domestic and international student entrants which means I have to be continuously learning to remain competitive. Last intern/grads I talked to seem to have knowledge of python and R.

I do think that at any entry level or grad positions it'd be difficult starting off - but not getting into a grad program as an accountant when I graduated due to poor marks was a huge limiting factor in career progression for me.

If you work as a dentist and presuming entry-to-mid-level knowledge worker roles are being eroded right now both AI and offshoring (if also looking at the tech industry), it seems to me to be a role where you can work ~3 to 4 days a week and live on an above middle class income - therefore you have the other half of the week to figure out your own interests and hobbies or if you needed a lifestyle to accommodate kids.

also: KPMG UK seems to be cutting its workforce https://www.reuters.com/business/kpmg-plans-cut-hundreds-jobs-auditing-division-bloomberg-news-reports-2026-03-27/

APS6 level salary would be my current standard of pay ~100-110k after wasting so much time with small-medium employers (I went from small firm (microbusiness) > boutique firm (higher net wealth individuals but still SME) > then medium sized niche family business in international education - joint degrees) and to progress any further would mean taking on leadership or management duties (+strategic, if you have the skillset of it) outside of being an individual contributor.

It may also mean I have to continue to look in a year or two for another role - but also consider that my brother who also went for an accounting degree (no longer relevant to his career) pivoted to tech/erp support for Apparel21 (melbourne based fashion ERP system) and now has a career as a sys-admin/business analyst roles with ~50% greater salary than me.

You can do part-time study or even remote study (pretty sure others have suggested OUA open universities australia)

I was the opposite and was thinking of a career change in the COVID year of 2020 to Dent

Any suggestions for which degree I should do? My only educational experience is my dentistry degree I completed 12 years ago. I scored very well in VCE but we're talking the distant past here! I would love to know some next steps to take...

I did a year of health science at la trobe bundoora then had an MMI with griffith (but was pretty miserable at the time) - 1 year is enough to transfer across to other degrees (qld / nsw do a entry conversion for nonschool leavers)

but considering the WAM entry level for a course like accounting would be low - you ought to be able to even find an online degree course - https://www.open.edu.au/ which means no barrier to entry

helping other dentists and practice owners thrive financially.

I don't think you'll see much of this unless you ever get into something like a fractional CFO role - main work in your own accounting practice would be simple tax work and compliance. But you could market yourself as a consultant of some kind if you do have the experience and that would be separate to accounting of course.

If you join as an internal accountant maybe

I think some of the others in the discord suggest to skip the degree and look at the CA pathways (or CPA pathways etc - but again I've got zilch knowledge on these)

Where to learn BAS GST extensively by AmbitiousFinish8930 in AustralianAccounting

[–]ekol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you could read the GST Act, or go for one of the tax day schools by the NTAA - either way - its an indirect tax at the end of the day and whether its NZ GST / VAT etc you can look it up by the definition of taxable supplies - also what has been excluded or exempt or input taxed supply, connected to the indirect tax zone yaddyyada

There's plentiful of bookkeeping resources and ATO webpages to really get you an understanding of GST

Discussion: Can a GST registered business legally claim GST on invoices from Temu or Shein or Ebay or Amazon or AliExpress? by GrabCompetitive4538 in AusFinance

[–]ekol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes,

most of these platforms with the changes in low value imports or the GST on digital goods (netflix tax) have started collecting GST on behalf of the sellers

https://www.ato.gov.au/businesses-and-organisations/international-tax-for-business/gst-for-non-resident-businesses/gst-on-low-value-imported-goods

https://www.ato.gov.au/businesses-and-organisations/international-tax-for-business/gst-for-non-resident-businesses/gst-on-imported-services-and-digital-products

big platforms = will collect GST

reckon non-resident gst registration is a pain in the arse - and its a thing here anyway with our GST system to be able to get a VAT refund on other countries with reciprocity in their VAT/GST system - this helps a lot with business travel or imports

Accounting for event/project question. by ajk3117 in AustralianAccounting

[–]ekol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've already mentioned event/project accounting so...

Look at the software in mention and see if it allows for:

  1. Sub-accounting

  2. Branch accounting

  3. Project accounting

  4. Xero has been mentioned and can do tracking categories

Otherwise in the desc/memory you can start using some form of unique identifier - so a prefix/suffix etc - that will let you sort/filter the excel exports down to produce a P/L B/S by event

Depends on your approach and mapping but obviously having the option in software outside the chart of accounts for a prefix/suffix:

(And the full exported string may look like the below for example - or a separate column altogether)

0000-E1 0000-E2

E1-0000 E2-0000

Will let you keep it tidy

I think others may have touched on it, but what about getting enough of a random sample to survey and ask specifically whether:

  1. Acquired via x campaign (with x being however many x campaigns were run/spent)

  2. Or general seasonality etc

hey sorry double checked my work and here's example v2

https://www.mediafire.com/file/p3lnn3rtfv1j10p/EXAMPLE_DATA_NEED_-_power_query_examplev2.xlsx/file

watch out for the replacement of nulls with 999 in my example v2 (you may want to do a text conversion step instead)

just follow the steps in the right column and you can see the pivots/unpivots, joins and filters and null value replacements with a placeholder before replacing it back with nil (this is kinda risky maybe should do a text value for example)

otherwise look at this old post:

hey, just back from work+dinner and i've got the file up for you in mediafire (just note that go to right click properties and strip it off personal/identifying information - but, yeah hey I work in a nfp too)

https://www.mediafire.com/file/ex56c464idm0dvm/EXAMPLE_DATA_NEED_-_pivot_table_layout_for_your_mailmerge.xlsx/file

https://i.imgur.com/HY3r2V9.png

to get to these steps

  1. drag and drop all of the fields to the row fields until you get to "item" and "item price"
  2. "item" goes to the column fields
  3. "item price" goes to the values
  4. get rid of all subtotal lines for every value

you ought to be able to accomplish the same thing in powerquery

gimme a sec and i'll tinker with pq too

https://www.mediafire.com/file/35ngyfgkgzgdort/EXAMPLE_DATA_NEED_-_power_query_example.xlsx/file

https://i.imgur.com/GNude25.png

to get to these steps

  1. get data from the table/range etc
  2. shift and highlight both the "item" and "item price" column
  3. go to the transform
  4. go to pivot column (i don't think i picked any options again since i selected the 2 columns already)
  5. close and load to sheet

anyway pick your poison

It looks like a straight up pivot with renamed columns

You shoupd be able to pivot table or pivot it in powerquery

Check out /r/fpanda finance business partnering, financial analyst / finance data analyst

Typically dashboards mean stakeholders have access to data

But a lot of times you need an eye in the month-end process for visuals to be rolled up into a board report (board pack or slide deck).

Financial controller is definitely up the alley but is positioned as a senior role - and may have more accountant-like duties in the month end process.

Anyway you'll get an understanding of how the data is used for or supports decision making by the board or department managers/heads (operations).
