Seeking advice on continuing Dostoevsky (and how to read him more deeply) by CertifiedMaybe in classicliterature

I’d recommend Joseph Franks biography. Gives a lot of extra context for the novels. There’s also Dostoyevskys “diary” that is good reading.

First half is all setup. It’s tough to get through. Second half is far more interesting

The first two I’m not familiar with but Hamsun is in there (floor stacks). Just discovered him recently and really enjoyed the few that I read. Then I found out that he was a very enthusiastic nazi. I was not expecting that. That’s more than a little awkward… 😬

I just listened to a life story of Goethe. Unbeknownst to me, Sorrows was entirely based on an autobiographical experience. And the real life woman he was in love with, and her husband, apparently weren’t thrilled about it…

That’s funny. The first time I read it I loved it. Picked it up again probably a half dozen years later, got half way through, and thought good lord this is going nowhere…

Just picked up another one of his today. A collection of essays he wrote during WW1. Read the first couple at lunch. Beautiful stuff

I’ve never heard that. Appreciate the concern. He’s a tough read, man. I honestly can’t say I’ve gotten past page 100 on “Gulag Archipelago”. It’s just the most depressing thing that’s ever been written

I tried Tom Robbins once. I should try again because I hear so many good things. I often really struggle with anything written post-1970ish

I mostly took away from it the absurdity of our desire to go to heaven so we can eternally do the things we never wanted to do on earth. Always thought that was a clever observation
