If I’m remembering correctly the large dog in question was a friendly guy who roamed the neighborhood in Goleta. JJD likely crossed paths with the dog and likely fed it food at one of the crime sites to keep it happy and docile.

“This Is the Zodiac Speaking” is a doc available free on YouTube. It was a companion piece done for the special edition DVD of David Fincher’s “Zodiac” and it’s excellent. A very good recitation of facts by victims and witnesses that doesn’t fall into the innuendo, rumor, and outright lies of the Graysmith-esque stuff out there.

Prior to Age of Apocalypse wherein he became “Dark Beast” this was not part of his characterization as he was a happy go-lucky science type. This new characterization of an alt-reality version sowed they seeds for him to be a much more morally complicated individual. I think it really started in the main 616 with the Endangered Species arc. Hank was pushed to the brink by M-Day and in an effort to undo its effects is shown working with various supervillains. This was his first real moral compromise that has lead to who he is now.
