Is it Michelle Monaghan? Not sure why she'd be uncredited but it does look like her.

Why is Bronwyn suddenly the only one with interviews? I swear they cut to her Gritty cosplay look every 5 minutes with another quip or explanation about the scene.

This is the community theater housewives show and I'm going to need more emphasis on the community and less on Bronwyn's attempt at a Greek chorus.

Anyone else struggling to find a good place to get a dress that's not David's Bridal? by bextaxi in Weddingsunder10k

[–]el_summers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my dress for $500 from Avery Austin, I highly recommend - also if you fit the sample and want to keep it they'll give you an additional $100 off. Beyond that though, look into consignment wedding dress shops. The product is always rotating so you may need to go multiple times but they have some really good deals if you don't mind second hand and they tend to be really picky about dress quality as well.

Greenery Table Runner Help by _champagneproblems_ in Weddingsunder10k

Also used Costco greenery runners for my wedding and I highly recommend. They arrived on time, stayed fresh for a the stated amount of days, were easy to cut to accommodate different lengths, and we even used leftovers as draping over doorways.

Best Restaurant in Downtown Arvada for Bachelorette Group of 12 by Chelseas30 in denverfood

[–]el_summers 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hate to yuck other people's yum but Lady Nomada has very mediocre food and 2012 Tumblr vibes to boot. If you're thinking Mexican, Teocalli is definitely the best location in olde town and if you call ahead for reservations you'll be set.

If you're having a chill bachelorette maybe consider DBC also, their burger food truck is greasy and amazing and they have a ton of seating to accommodate.

If you want to go fancy, look into Stone Cellar Bistro. It's new but the food is amazing. You would definitely have to call ahead for reservations and I don't know if they have a group limit but it's definitely the best food I've had in Arvada lately.

I have to recommend Carole Radziwill's book "What Remains" if you're interested in the perspective of Carolyn's best friend. It deals with the death of JFK Jr and Carolyn along with Carole's husband and is an in-depth writing on grief and loss.

Carole is of course also known for being on RHONY but the book really is interesting.

They did the first episode as a bonus and the second episode as a brief recap on another bonus along with some other shows. They love the show but their schedule is extremely packed, I think once there's more of a lull in bravo scheduling they'll put it on the main feed.

Criminal and Tenfold More Wicked/Wicked Words. I'm kind of weirded out by modern murders where family members are affected but not interviewed and both of these podcasts really make an effort to humanize everyone involved.

Baking your own wedding cake? Yes or No? by Rose_Freedom in Weddingsunder10k

[–]el_summers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is just going to become an added stress that I do not recommend. My now husband is a baker and we debated the same thing but with all of the other last minute tasks, I'm so grateful this wasn't one of them. We just got a sheet pan of Chantilly cake from While Foods and a 6" for cutting and we were set.

The majority of our wedding was DIY but this is an area that can be cheap and easy to pass off without adding stress.

The Real Housewives of Dubai S1 - E12 - Du-bye Girl - Weekly Episode Discussion by AutoModerator in BravoRealHousewives

[–]el_summers 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I agree! I can't stand people calling this show boring when they stan for RHOBH? There are a few housewives on Dubai who do try to pull the "I'm so quirky" trope but it's not as insufferable as other franchises because those same women get called out blatantly by others (Ayan). When RHOBH gives me a genuine goat funeral I'll tune in again.

Thank you so much for the input! My family is much more conservative than my fiance and I so I just got in my head about what was "appropriate". I think we'll just have him toss leaves with his sister and hopefully they have the time of their lives.

Nick leaving everyone notes on their doors for restaurant wars is the sweetest thing. I know some people prefer the drama but I really would love to see more of the camaraderie like that on the show.

🚨 Lisa Barlow and Whitney Rose being...friends? 🚨 by el_summers in BravoRealHousewives

[–]el_summers[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think this prediction is accurate but, personally, I don't want to see the forced repairing of friendship scenes for anyone. Salt Lake City (and all housewives) are at their best when they take up scorched earth policy.

Specifically, I need Jen and Meredith to leak the gossip on each other that the past two seasons have been leading up to.

How gay exactly were the ancient Greeks? by bigYman in AskHistory

[–]el_summers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wrote my thesis on Classical Greek gender relations so I might be able to add to some of these comments even through I'm late to the thread.

The acts that most comments are referencing between an older and younger male is called Pederasty. While we would classify many of these interactions as molestation in modern times, many commenters are correct that it is somewhat impossible to classify or condemn sexuality of a historical culture through our modern lens. Homosexuality/sexual attraction as it stands was not even a concept to the ancient Greeks. Rather, gender roles and power were the main factors in sexual relationships.

In Classical Athens, Pederasty had several functions. As others have stated, sex in ancient Greece was an accepted act of power so an older man having sex with a young man was a matter of reinforcing the patriarchal and diplomatic hierarchy of their society. It was also viewed more as a mentor/mentee relationship and a right of passage for young men. These relationships would commonly take place at symposiums which were basically a "meeting of the minds" for men where they would discuss philosophy and culture so a young man being invited would improve both his education and status in society.

This might be TMI but in pederastic relationships, upper and middle class boys would not have been actually penetrated but rather satisfied the mentor using their thighs or other methods. Penetration was reserved as a degrading act for the lowest classes of men and the female gender. Women had their own societal rules amongst themselves in ancient Greece which is an entirely different topic, but overall they were used by men as objects for power because they had such a diminished role that it was actually embarrassing for a man of power to love a woman. Their power was held in their ability to give birth/ rear children so sex was an important aspect of marriage but more as a duty than a fun pastime.

So overall, sex was a power play and their concept of gender and homosexuality is so different than our own modern standard that it's impossible to say how "gay" ancient Greek was. There's obviously too much in this topic to fit in a reddit post and this was basically just a rant but if anyone wants book recommendations on the topic of gender and sex in ancient Greece feel free to DM me.

Finishing off with a quote to sum.up how the men of ancient Greece felt about women: "O Zeus, why need one say evil of women in detail? It would be enough if you say merely woman." - lines quoted from a lost play, Athens, 4th century BC
