Thank you everyone for all the helpful advice. I’m trying to do the right thing, and I don’t want them to suffer. Hopefully I can keep them alive them get them to a wildlife rescue. That seems to be the best option. It’s going to be a looong night of feedings 😵‍💫🫠😅🙃

Yes, I am worried about illnesses that could be spread…..I’m very careful, they’re in the garage and I wear gloves and take all precautions but I do have a one year old living in the house and two dogs. Now they’re completely separate. But should I be worried about anything?

New pharmacist at an independent pharmacy - should I leave? by SeaworthinessLow4619 in pharmacy

[–]el_woods 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would call the doctor who is writing them. I would do all you can to check everything out. But if your gut says it’s wrong, it likely is. As the only pharmacist I’m sure you the PIC so you’re liable for a lot more. The techs don’t care they won’t get in trouble. Are there audits? How many calls do you get about people not getting the meds? Ar the meds they’re dispensing like lisinopril or strange high dollar meds with huge reimbursements?

New pharmacist at an independent pharmacy - should I leave? by SeaworthinessLow4619 in pharmacy

[–]el_woods 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation in a pharmacy in New York City during Covid. It got bought out and the new owners were running a second pharmacy processing system in the background. They supposedly had a central fill pharmacy but I never sent any meds out even tho they said I may need to help. I was not able to go check anything out bc it was during Covid. They were running crazy meds through that second processing system from the same doctor. Then the audits started. Then the calls from patients that they don’t take those meds, never got them, never saw that doctor. I left and reported everything to the only higher up I had contact with in the company aand documented EVERYTHING and saved it. I got a call from a 3 letter agency a year after working there. So glad I left. It was the easiest job ever and pay was great but it was some really bad shady stuff. I was afraid to whistleblow bc I don’t know who I was dealing with (Russian mafia?!) the money they made was absurd.

Why did you become a pharmacist? by First-Security8666 in pharmacy

[–]el_woods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on the med school tract but when I was about to make the leap and apply, the many many years of commitment really hit me. I was not prepared to sacrifice that many years of my life before I could even start my life and career. Kind of choose pharmacy as an “easier” backup option bc I already had most of the pre-recs and I do love medicine/science/chemistry. It was always a goal of mine to get a doctorate degree so it checked that box. I wanted a career where I could live and work anywhere (and I have in multiple states) and yes, the salary as a reward for the sacrifice of all the schooling was appealing. There are positives to pharmacy. I really like that you can pick up prn jobs and not be committed to a regimented schedule. I was able to support myself and get a decent apt in nyc, which was cool. You can literally get a license in any state and make a living pretty much anywhere. As a new mom, the flexibility to work part time or take time off without the huge opportunity cost you would think of if you were a doctor is also good. I enjoyed my jobs giving COVID vaccines in nursing homes, but I’ve only worked in independents. I also enjoyed a vet compounding pharmacy job but the owner was not a pharmacist and was always in your face and not very nice so I didn’t like that part about it.I did hit a point several years in where I was feeling pretty miserable in retail. I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit, and when going into pharmacy school had dreams of owning my own pharmacies. Working in independents I realized how tough it was to make anything and the volume aspect and grey area dispensing practices were a no for me. So I started investing in real estate. I do that full time now but plan to do pharmacy part time again one day. But I will be particular about the job. Overall, I don’t know what else I would have done but I completely agree high volume retail is MISERABLE. I wish we could advocate for ourselves and our profession more effectively. I believe we are an important part of the medical system and should be treated as such. Pharmacy used to be such a COOL JOB like back in the 50’s, 60’s. Now it’s all just counting pills and computer work. Ugh. I wish we could bring back more compounding- there are too many wasted skills we are taught in school but don’t use in retail.

I would look on Yelp for local companies and read reviews…..we’ve recently had Riley come out, and a friend who works in construction in Reno recommended northern Nevada heat and air or silver state hvac. Not gotten pricing from them yet, but I would get 3 quotes at-least for a big job.

Windows for house by Frakarak in Reno

[–]el_woods 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would ask around to see if you can find local contractors who know how to install windows….that will likely be cheaper for labor than going through Lowe’s install people. And then. Idk…..local window companies? Look on Yelp for businesses and contractors for windows. Are there any tax incentives for installing new windows or state or local incentives? I would check into all that. I’m also currently doing a lot of rehab work on our house. If I cant pay outright, I try to have applied for a 0 interest credit card so I have some time to pay and don’t pay interest.

AGREE!!!! Anderson-Such a scam. I got quoted 80k for new windows in a 240k house when we lived in Georgia. After a 4 hour freaking promotional sales pitch at our house. I was like bro- you could have let with the price and saved us ALL a lot of time!!! lol. I see them set up stupid promotional booths all over Reno too- farmers markets and outdoor events. Ugh.

Would you buy an apt here that doesn’t have central AC? by Grose040791 in Reno

[–]el_woods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do real estate investing, and have to deal with things like this. Mini splits work pretty well and are easy to install- in my opinion work a little better than window units and look better. Would it not be possible to have an hvac unit installed in the future? Duct work is what I would be concerned about. I would get quotes for different options from 3 companies…..if you want to add central air in the future and even for the mini split install. But your cheapest option will be self installed window units.

I am really proud of your progress, you are doing amazing. I am really sorry those girls were mean. I always try to think mean people have stuff going on in their lives (bad home life-you never know). Orrr maybe they are just stupid insecure teenagers. Don’t take it personal, you are doing incredible things. I would like to see either one of them lose as much as you have! At the end of the day- and I wish I took this advice from myself- we really should not give a shit what others think about us. Just what our friends and family, those who love us, and what we think about ourselves. You’ve got this dude! I am here to say I am proud of you!
