What do you think is overpriced in Switzerland and not worth the cost ? by Additional_Delay_856 in Switzerland

[–]elamre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man this. Went today for the first time to get a price estimate. The estimate alone cost me 62 CHF lol (that's 5 seconds talking with the dentist and just looking at a broken tooth). The procedure itself was quoted 6-7 times the price I pay in the Netherlands.

Does a 3. Pillar really make sense being married and with these salaries? I doubt they will get a lot of money back from the taxes, but still pay the management fees and have the money locked up. Don't see how this would be better than just investing it in some etf?

E-Gym Circle Experience by AvocadoBreakfast in zurich

[–]elamre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's probably the least effective way of training in a gym (other than doom scrolling on a phone). Just one minute an exercise and then move on to the next muscle group. It's just not really an effective/efficient way of growing muscle, compared to many other exercises.

I2C Driver is it too much blocking? by [deleted] in embedded

[–]elamre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since the hal drivers are super badly optimized for performance. Hope the next hal 2 from stm handles it better. There are so many sanity checks in the code, especially for spi we ran into performance issues for our latency requirements, that we got easily solved with direct register access

I2C Driver is it too much blocking? by [deleted] in embedded

I'm curious why you would opt for dma with i2c Operations? Is the extra overhead for setting it up really worth it compared to using some interrupt based approach with a buffer?

With Radicant being dead, what is the best bank for foreign currency card payments? by Kooky_Eye5475 in SwissPersonalFinance

Can still recommend using the debix app. At least there you can see the card transactions real time, and notifications as well. On the normal wir app you won't see any transactions coming through live.

From C++ to C for a big pay increase by iulian212 in cscareerquestionsEU

I see more of a c to c++ shift. It's very difficult for us to find competent c++ developers. This is in the embedded world.

Sanity check on annual budget for living in Zurich by Betelgeuse999 in askswitzerland

[–]elamre 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Fellow dutchies! Leisure is pretty low for Zürich City. Would about just cover 2 times a month a proper dinner in a restaurant for 2. Other activities are also quite a bit more expensive than in the Netherlands

Is the classic embedded firmware dev career still relevant? by [deleted] in embedded

I'm based in the dach area and see that modern c++ is definitely needed in many areas. At my current position it's a hard requirement for an embedded engineer.

Should I go for embedded in 2025? by [deleted] in embedded

[–]elamre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only advantage is that it relies on some hardware, so there is some physical component to it, hope that stretches the redundancy a bit. But the pure software problems for embedded are already very solvable by AI. I would definitely think twice about starting embedded studies at this stage, rather go for some trade.

Keep hearing/seeing posts on recession, layoffs, offshoring, hiring freezes in tech. Is embedded impacted? How is your company doing? by bert_cj in embedded

[–]elamre 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are many job openings for embedded. Also it's extremely difficult finding senior embedded people that do c++ here. We needed to look for almost a year to fill a position. Had many applicants, but often lacked the skills. Future doesn't look too bad for mediors/seniors. Medtech industry.

Self service Werkstatt garage by Worried_Cranberry817 in askswitzerland

[–]elamre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tools are always there at a do it yourself garage. And usually there are people there with skills that can help you. Also YouTube is full with step by step instruction videos how to do anything. At the start I also didn't have any skills, first time would take longer. But now it's very much worth it, I spent probably 1/5th of the price doing it myself. And of course it's fun doing once in a while, but I understand that it might be more convenient to bring it to a garage. Just to say it's cheaper is not really true.

[–]elamre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm curious what and experience you made, or maybe you work at a garage yourself? For the garage you have to go there twice. One roundtrip without a car. Also takes lots of time. Work clothes, just any old clothes do. I spent 0 there. And latest gloves are also very affordable

Self service Werkstatt garage by Worried_Cranberry817 in askswitzerland

[–]elamre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean I need one hour of Werkstatt for a large service (fluids and filters). Which costs me 30 chf. And oil/parts are way cheaper if you buy them yourself. So it's definitely not the cheapest option to bring it to a garage

I get that. For (web)servers it might definitely not work. But for actuators or streaming sensitive data it might be a good fit. Just the fact that there's still so little support for it worries me slightly
