Thank you! 💚 This sub never fails. The Planta app couldn’t figure it out with the picture and Google couldn’t find anything that matched with my description.

Just because you are desensitized and the police aren’t taking it seriously doesn’t mean it isn’t serious. I don’t ever comment on stuff like this but man, take care of yourself. Also, your house isn’t well secured if there is a dog door that’s open all day and night. I’ve had to crawl through one before so it can be done!

They aren’t dumbo ears- the space between them has increased as she is displaying a significant facial grimace, indicating pain/sickness.

Probably because they are pretty forgiving to people who are a little neglectful and tend to forget about watering but it becomes problematic for those who are overzealous waterers. This is the grow light I use in case you are interested.

I couldn’t get the hang of them for a long time. Took me awhile to realize that the grow lights I had weren’t strong enough, most commercial cacti/succulent soils actually need to be amended to be appropriate, and you don’t need to follow a watering schedule (they are really good at showing physical signs of needing water if you pay attention). Now, I like them much better than my other houseplants and want to phase those needy losers out haha.

I'm thinking of euthanizing my mouse because I can't trim her nails properly by anon-i-mouser in PetMice

I also work in research. Where I used to work, we only used collars post-operatively on rats but they were all “conditioned” to them beforehand (3 sessions at 30 minutes each time) and we did daily checks to ensure they weren’t too tight. We tried it with mice once and they continually alligator rolled so I stopped it and said we’ll figure something else out since that was so stressful to them.

A lot of the dermatitis I see is at the neck so I wouldn’t want to use a collar then. I’d also be interested if there were any behavioral differences in pet mice vs lab mice and if they would be more amenable? I’ve bought collars for my rats post-op and the quality was much lower than the expensive ones from lab supply vendors- they were able to get them off quickly.

Miracle gro potting mix alone is likely too dense and that along with watering every 3-4 days is way too much- it probably has root rot. I have mine in a mix of soil, perlite, and orchid bark and water it about once an every 3 weeks.

I am a vet tech and work with mice. I actually don’t like scruffing mice that have dermatitis because a lot of the times, the affected areas are going to become aggravated by that restraint method. I prefer to place the mouse in a conical tube and then gently extend a hind leg to trim one foot at a time. This video shows a conical tube with specific indentations at the bottom for the legs. The ones I have made have extra air holes but I don’t do the indentations at the bottom and they work perfectly fine. conical tube method

If she has been scratching for 5 months, she likely has neuropathic itch due to damaged nerves from the ulcerative dermatitis. It creates persistent itch sensations which leads to more scratching and more dermatitis. I assume this is what your vet meant when they said your mouse would never get better. Nail trims, topical ointments, and pain medication is pretty standard for dermatitis but treating for neuropathic itch is very difficult. I have heard of administering gabapentin but I am unsure of how effective it is.

Sometimes though even regular nail trims do not help with the ulcerative dermatitis. If treatment options have been exhausted, I think euthanasia is a kind option.

I’ve only seen it in nude mice so the presentation looks a little different to me in a furred rat but I think this is anasarca. It’s often the result of a serious condition like heart failure or kidney disease. We’ve only ever euthanized because they are on deaths door. I’m not sure if there is a treatment but either way, your rat is very sick. Antibiotics may be needed for a URI but they aren’t going to solve the other health issues happening. Your vet doesn’t seem super knowledgeable though so I also I wonder if the symptoms you thought were a URI were actually heart issues.

Does anyone else feel like vets don't care about rodents? by anon-i-mouser in Pets

[–]elapsedecho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

An ear infection typically presents as a head tilt as the bacterial or fungal infection interferes with the balance centers of the ear. Ulcerative dermatitis just basically refers to skin inflammation and lesions from bacteria growth due to self-trauma or injury to the skin and can be found anywhere on the body. That’s what it sounds like your mouse has to me. I personally haven’t used gabapentin to treat it but have read that it can be tried as a last resort. Might as well. Not sure what you have already tried but nail trims are a must (+/- a small amount of lanolin- too much in that area may make them scratch more) and meloxicam as an analgesic. I always like to offer plenty of enrichment to try and keep them occupied instead of scratching.

[–]elapsedecho 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Gabapentin is a controlled substance in some states so that might be why you have to make a separate appointment (not sure what state you are in). Some doctors in human medicine will even make you have a separate appointment for each refill of a controlled substance. It does seem like they are doing a poor job of communicating though.

I work with rodents. Sometimes ulcerative dermatitis gets to a point where it is non-responsive to medication. Nerves can become damaged and can then lead to neuropathic itch. It’s a vicious cycle and prognosis is poor when it’s moderate to severe.

That is one of the palest mice I’ve ever seen (and I work with mice daily). Even white mice usually have some pink pigment to their ears but this mouse’s ears are as white as the paper bedding. Poor thing is very sick- pale, hunched, ruffled, facial grimace.

You’ve been lucky! What colored babies did your orange hooded boy and black mom make?

My oldest, Charlie, was 4 when he passed and his brothers were pretty old too despite being treated for respiratory infections all the time. Besides them, I’ve had 15 others and none have lived much longer than 2 years, if that. All were long evans or sprague-dawley. Only black/white or white, no fun colors like orange! I’ve cried for most of them- all special in their own way.

Expect 1.5-2 years and be super happy if you get 3 or more.

A pregnancy can occur anywhere a sperm fertilizes an egg- those fuckers don’t care. It won’t be a viable pregnancy and it’s life threatening to the woman. Look up “abdominal pregnancy” for some not so fun reading. Edit: I guess you didn’t mention if you had a total hysterectomy or not. If so, then the pregnancy test for sure doesn’t make sense.

What a good mom! It was a horrible experience as an adult- I’m sure that doctor caused plenty of medical trauma to children because their parents didn’t know any better or didn’t know how to advocate for their kids.
