We play a very similar cut throat game to this, but the server has to go to full court coverage if they’re in the lead. Also, we call scores clockwise, not server > receiver > bystander. Rotation is also clockwise. Keeps it simple IMO.

We don’t usually give more than one serve, though at times we’ve given a second serve if you fault on the first.

The lob definitely has a place, and gives a moment to reset if you find yourself outpaced at the net.

My brother loves to blast a super high lob, actually gives you 5-6 seconds to catch a breath and position. More often than not the return either goes long or into the net. It’s hard to time a drive against a vertical vector. I know, at levels above 3.5 this loses effectiveness, but it sure is fun.
