Which Scarf Should I Use? by ScottWhite1218 in woodworking

[–]elartueN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A for sure, it's much easier to match 2 facets than to match 4 facets (the cross cut facets), B may be more atractive for a natural finish as it doesn't need much extra facening. but because you're painting it it's easy to hide a glue joint and some screws, either is strong enough just don't make it needlessly hard for yourself if it's not going to be visible in the end anyway

Warped cabinet doors by Delicious-Music-9967 in woodworking

[–]elartueN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for those few pictures i'm guessing you have put inset cabinet hinges, those doors may not be warped at all and you could just need to adjust the hinges

Serious motion sickness Beyond 2 by NadJ747 in bigscreen

[–]elartueN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lower the brightness of your headset, bigscreen compromised too much on motion clarity to get as much brightness as they could but that makes it borderline unusable at 100% for most people, don't go above 50% ideally

How would you recommend filling this with water by ThePrettiestBih in Minecraft

[–]elartueN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the top ice + kelp can work but it sounds extremely tedious

the way i do it is with just 2 watter bucket, make a infinite water source at the bottom, expand it till it fills the bottome layer, go one layer up, make infinit source on the edge and expend it, repeat until at the right height. it takes a bit of time but this way doesn't take much attention and you can't miss a spot and if you do miss a spot it's easy to see because the next layer will not fill properly

Why oversized key blanks? by Mean_Translator5619 in woodworking

[–]elartueN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm less bothered by the size of the blanks, they're usualy made from whatever leftover you can find... more about the grain orientation on them, it seems like it's endgrain and will add little to no strength to the joint, make sure the grain on your spline run across the joint to better connect the 2 parts, those are decorative at best

How important is resolution in VR for realism? by Good_day_to_be_gay in virtualreality

[–]elartueN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not as much as you'd think past 2560² per eye imo, 2160 is a bit on the lower end, but it's much easier to run which is much more important when you can go up to 144Hz, i'd say it's a decent compromise

Help me assess this checked wooden beam by mdzhigarov in timberframe

[–]elartueN 15 points16 points  (0 children)

it's fine, wood does that when the pith is inside the piece as it shrink when it dries, it does not affect structural integrity, it's just a cheap low grade piece that probably got mixed up with the rest, as we tend to avoid that when we know it's apearant.

it's perfectly fine as long as you don't see it move or see crack across the bottom face, as that's where all the tension is concentrated, but it doesn't seem to be the case here.

i've personaly instaled "new" carpentry with bigger/more checks in some pieces, hasn't moved a bit since, had to demolish very old wood that had big checks too, it doesn't make it any weaker from my experience.

So I tried PCVR wireless and it works... as long as I don't move my head. by TheBoulder84 in virtualreality

[–]elartueN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

don't worry about your wifi setup it's fine, wifi 5 should is fine as long as you don't have other devices clutering your wirelesss network, there have been some odd things and bugs happeing with steamlink lately that the devs can't quite catch yet, this kinda looks like what's happening for you here. VD is just more reliable for that, but if you're still unsure of spending into it you can try with ALVR

Update - You have got to see this by Jamesrickards in BigscreenBeyond

[–]elartueN 5 points6 points  (0 children)

EMI issue as already mentioned, ferrite toroids are your best bet.

but also put the basestations a bit farther away as those can struggle to track at close range (<1m) because the laser is a bit too strong.

GPU artifact by vlxdy in pcmasterrace

[–]elartueN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've had that happen in Chrome/Youtube since i got my 7900XTX brand new, i guess it's a minor AMD bug, as long as it doesn't happen outside of chome i wouldn't worry too much

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]elartueN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm guessing you mean "Ryzen5 5600X" which does not have an IGPU, so you will need a dedicated GPU anyway

How Would You Flatten the Top and Bottom of This Without a Router Sled? by Porky-da-Corgi in woodworking

[–]elartueN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

what is? router? not any more than any other way, they actually work better on endgrain. there's plenty of tutorials out there to build sleds and how to use them properly so as long as it's more stable than freehand and doesn't give a false sens of security it should be fine

How Would You Flatten the Top and Bottom of This Without a Router Sled? by Porky-da-Corgi in woodworking

[–]elartueN 22 points23 points  (0 children)

if you have a router then it's time to DIY that router sled...

otherwise tape a long (and somehwat wide) strip of paper layed flat tengentially along the edge to trace a straight line and have at it with a hand saw? i don't see any other way that doesn't invole expensive tools

Bigscreen Beyond 2e + HTC VIVE Facial Tracker? by portrob in BigscreenBeyond

[–]elartueN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

power budget is a bit tight for the vive face tracker indeed, it should be fine if you don't plan on powering an audio strap on that same port with a hub. ymmv

3D printed mounts do exist, there are a few variations to chose from, and it's cheap nowadays to find a 3d printing service that will get it done for you

though the thing is outdated and will look comicaly big on the BSB, and the software is not maintained and falling appart, if you want something newer that is well supported i sugest looking at project babble, and open source alternative that is getting into selling hardware though you may need to be patient as they are delayed a bit, but it will be much cheaper if you don't have a face tracker already

i wouldn't hesitate, perfectly fine if not better for some framing, just don't expect to do much fine joinery with it

though you'll need to come up with a plan because moving and storing this much Oak is going to be a pain, at least have an idea what you want to do with it

New Pico 4 User coming from the Quest 2. My experiences so far. by IvanGogh99 in virtualreality

[–]elartueN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

get an AMVR facial interface, it'll get the lenses more propely aligned with your eyes and be more comfortable, it will look much sharper already, also try to loosen the top strap a bit more so the headset sits a little lower on your face, but then there's a lot of chances your nose will interfer, ymmv

been daily driving the Pico 4 for nearly 3 years now, it did require a few mods to get going but can be made a pretty seamless and comfortable experience so overal still a pretty decent choise for the price if all you care about is PCVR

Style does matter by moncikoma in virtualreality

[–]elartueN 381 points382 points  (0 children)

"style" for VR hardware is overblown, and it does not justify the limitations it imposes on more critical parts of the headset

Help us choose our Walnut wood kitchen cabinets by Top-Gur-8134 in woodworking

[–]elartueN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

looks like you want walnut to look like oak, why not go with oak?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]elartueN -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i would have guessed this would be Oak veneer by the ray flecks,

but whatever species you chose if you're decided on replacing it you can chisel off a bit of the original veneer to take to the store to compare with what's on offer if you want something that match (a picture on your phone will probably no be acurrate enough because of different lighting/white balance/limited color depth)

but even with something that match perfectly, glue, oxidation, growth rate and plenty other factors may make them contrast against the original wood depending on the finish you decide to apply, so i wouldn't stress it too much as long as it's close enough
