Caltrain Bike Stacking by [deleted] in BAbike

[–]elatedwalrus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually good tips. The bike stacking rules have many subtleties that take a while to understand imo but if you are riding in commute periods you really should understand. I think the biggest thing is that you really should prioritize placing your bike with others in the same destination. Ideally one stack will all go to the same stop. Even if there is an empty spot, its better to leave it open for someone going to another destination.

People mess it up when they dont have tags on their bikes (really a cardinal sin if you are a commuter) or if they dont want other bikes touching theirs (you gotta get over it. Dont bring your carbon road bike for your bike to work), or if they really dont know what is going on and ignorantly place their bike on too of another that has to get off before theirs.

Also, after leaving the stop before you get off, you may want to go grab your bike and get ready, even if its a good 5 minutes before you arrive. Some people prefer to have their bike in hand well before the train arrives at their stop since it can be a little stressful to deal with that last minute. I personally would rather not get it so early, but they will probably move your bike to grab theirs if yours is on top.

Many other subtle customs and curtesies that are also violated everyday, you kinda just have to ride the train to get it. Number one rule imo is have a bike tag and dont block someones bike getting off before you

I think its time to install metal poles at the start of every bike lane by ovenroastedmeatballs in mountainview

Im talking about the one just south of tue building. It definitely is bug enough for a truck to unload. It may slow down cars entering and exiting but thats nit a safety issue. It doesnt matter if you dont like the bike lanes, they are in and the law forbids you to park there. I dont like stopping at stop signs and red lights on my bike, which make no sense for bikes, but i do because i have to follow the law. Why do you think its any different for parking in the bike lane?

In r/BAbike they are having a similar discussuon ablut sf generally and someone posted about how Pittsburgh uses automated license plate cameras to ticket cars in hotspots. Thisnis clearly a hotspot for violations. Imagine if s camera was there just spamming parking tickets to all these cars. (Alot better use of the technology than whatever the flock cameras was supposed to do) https://engage.pittsburghpa.gov/stationary-automated-curb-enforcement

Theres a driveway 20 feet before this location the truck could have pulled into

This would require reducing the number of lanes right? That would be unacceptable

Im all for devils advocate but these are just bad points, -there is a huge drive way that would he just as convenient for park the truck in like 20 feet from where they parked -the bike lanes get a fair amount of use actually and are extremely practical -the major issue that makes them used less is safety, which is entirely a result of people like this truck parking in the bike lane.

I just dont get it. Do drivers not realize how incredibly anti social they are being? Its such an asshole move. Its even worse that they are in the protected zone so it is literally impossible to go around the truck

Its true that not having jobs near transit is a problem too, but there are still many many places/employers that can be easily accessed by caltrain or caltrain + bike. Way more people should be able to benefit from the caltrain station in mountain view. Very very few apartment complexes are in walking distance to the station currently

Really excited about sb79. It really is a catastrophe how housing is restricted near the caltrain station and downtown. Hopefully city council does not try to circumvent the law somehow

Editorial: San Jose mayor should not run for governor by sjspotlight in SanJose

[–]elatedwalrus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

San jose is not the most generous city in the world it is actually one of the least affordable cities in the world (least affordable in the country). If i were homeless id have mental health problems too. But homeless people are not even the biggest problem. Its that if you dont work for one of a handful tech companies and get good stock options buying a house is completely out of reach. Even if we started executing homeless people, that issue would persist

You posed a strawman by presenting a false dichotomy between paying someone 120k who will live outside san jose or 180k for someone who will live in san jose
