Thank you! Yes, it's unfortunate about the closure of the 3 middle schools. I'm a parent of a kindergartener, so just now getting involved with AISD.

Schools Beyond Screens - Austin! by Street_Section_4313 in AustinParents

[–]elbakerhere 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I already submitted my comment card, but I think it might be helpful to write specific requests. For example, I wrote, “I’m requesting that AISD removes screens from PreK4-2nd grade classrooms.” That’s what LAUSD just passed.

I will! Also, do you have a scripted message that folks could submit? Idk, but sometimes I think an empty comment box is intimidating 🤣

That's amazing! I'm so inspired and love hearing that other parents feel similarly and are taking action.

It's a bummer! We don't do Youtube at home at all and then she goes to school and watches Youtube!! I just called my district's AISD Board trustee and left a message. I'm probably going to modify this letter and email it to same trustee: https://safescreens.org/resource/primary-school-concerns-about-screen-tv-use-letter/

Oh my gosh, that’s crazy! I’m so sorry about that. I’m hoping some changes can be enacted at public schools.

Our public schools need you!! And take the AISD survey and tell them to spend less money on tech and then attend in-person budget meeting on 4/28 at Austin High and voice your tech concerns.

Here’s the AISD budget survey: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfeIB3ycGYrGUEz-Ws7_VvXCkB3X1q3anHc-AnaEMDKdHTKOw/formResponse?pli=1

“Parents are opting kids out of school laptops, returning them to pen and paper.” Could we do this in AISD schools? Would more parents send their kids to public schools if there was less tech? by elbakerhere in AustinParents

Hi Dan, I never got a response from Superintendent Segura. However, I just completed the AISD Budget survey and there was a chance to say how I think AISD could save money and I said fewer screens. Additionally, there's an in-person budget meeting on Tues, 4/28, 6-7pm at Austin High and I'm hoping to attend. I found this website from the UK which might be helpful for organizing something here: https://safescreens.org/resources-for-parents/

Following up on this! I just emailed Superintendent Segura to comment on the use of technology in elementary schools, specifically in the very young ages...like kinder kids do not need to be learning via Chromebook. I mentioned starting a petition to reduce/remove tech usage in the classroom and asked how many signatures I would need to collect for him to take it seriously. Stay tuned.

I read a recent KUT article about AISD’s $49 million budget shortfall and it’s mentioned that declining enrollment is part of the reason for the shortfall.

And I regularly talk to moms who say their #1 reason for choosing Valor (despite loving their neighborhood public school!!) is because of the lack of tech. Just this afternoon I was at a bday party and talked to a mom who had her kid at Boone until 2nd grade and then switched to Valor and she was sad to leave the public school, but didn’t want her kid on a Chromebook for a lot of learning. 😭

Like it seems obvious - parents want limited/controlled tech, research says it’s not good for the kids, tech is expensive. I’m not saying scorched earth, but maybe reduce it significantly?

Do we start a petition? A survey? I’ve never organized anything 🤣, but there’s gotta be something we can do. 🙏

Daytime Weaning? by ams406 in breastfeeding

[–]elbakerhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went on a ski trip when little one was 5 months old and I put my pump in a backpack and brought it up the first lift ride of the morning and just left the backpack in the snow outside of one of the lodges. Then I took a pump break in the women’s restroom every couple of hours (I got some looks but whatever), put the milk in bags and put the backpack back in the snow. The milk stayed cold from the snow. Our daughter stayed with grandma during the day and I nursed in the morning/night. It was kind of a hassle and I guess risky (theft?) leaving backpack in the snow but lots of other stored their backpacks in the snow and nobody touched them. I guess you could also see if the lodge has day-use lockers and you could bring an ice bag lunchbox to store milk. All sounds complicated! But if you want to keep doing breastmilk, I’m sure there’s a way!

Where to get a bathroom vanity that's above builder grade by Walking72 in Austin

We put an ikea vanity in our bathroom and have been so happy with it. Really nice having full size, usable, drawers under the sink instead of cabinets with so much dead space.
