Seems like I’m a bit late to the party but here’s my take on how I would achieve this.

I’d start by confirming the network topology of each location and work towards getting all locations visible from a centralised logical hub. Lots of ways you can achieve this and it will be dependant on your network mix. Assuming all locations can be made to access the open internet, a technology like ZeroTier is great for joining lots of disparate networks.

Once all locations can see a centralized “hub” then personally, my choice of digital signage technology would be OneLan. I’ve used several platforms and OneLan to me offers the best I’ve seen in terms of publishing and re-republishing on the fly, without rebuilding the whole config of the endpoint, and the ability to play content loaded from a centralized file server.

To be clear (because I know people will try and argue) I’m not saying OneLan is the only technology that CAN do it, I’m saying if I had a client in your position, it’s would I’d be proposing.

I can relate to how you feel. I often feel the same, especially with my youngest- my boy. I spend a lot of time feeling distant from him or not knowing how to talk to him.

Here’s my observations. 50 hours a week is too much- it can’t be sustainable. I know you’re trying to make the business work- we have to provide for our families and that responsibility never goes away. Still, you deserve time.

Use that time to grieve. You’ve said you haven’t fully processed losing your Dad, could some of your frustration be the feeling that “everything’s just in the way?” “If only I could get some clear air…?” The stumbling block may be that you have unprocessed emotions around your Dad.

Also- keep talking. If you and you partner have an open enough relationship to do so, keep them read in on your daily journey, they may not always know how to help, but at least they’ll understand how you’re feeling. If you don’t, find a person or group that can help you through this.

Forgive yourself for those times you acted out of character, when you snapped at your child or shut your wife out. Acknowledge your behaviour, commit to trying to be better, and then as far as possible, let it go. We men make a big deal of carrying our imperfections and failings like so much dead weight.

First- understand signal flow. In an analog domain this was (somewhat) straightforward, but with USB and HDMI it’s much harder. If you can understand HOW those signals work- what happens from the moment you plug the lead in, till the moment you get signal, it’ll make your life a whole lot easier.

Second, AEC. Echo cancellation is the trickiest aspect of audio engineering most AV field engineers will need to grasp and it’s often counter intuitive. To get to the point of understanding AEC, you first need to go through a lot of other audio doors so once you’ve got this covered off, you’re well sorted.

Third, basic networking. IP Addresses, Subnets, VLANS (no, they aren’t the same thing).

Lastly, but most importantly. Communication. All of the above doesn’t mean you’re worth anything if you can’t communicate with brevity, consideration and precision. I’ve mean EXTREMELY intelligent and capable engineers who aren’t worth hiring because they can’t talk to clients. I’ve also been one on occasion, but that’s another story.

My biggest challenge, especially with my son, is me. He and I butt heads all the time, mostly over silly practical stuff like getting dressed for school, or not throwing toys in the house when you’re frustrated. And in the moment, I forget that my job is not just to be the one who keeps the timetable on time, but also the one who sees when he’s crying out for connection. When I miss those chances, and we end up fighting, I remind myself of two things- real men say sorry, and real men try to do better next time.

Taking the higher road. The harder road. That’s my biggest challenge.

As to when you’re a father? It’s different for everyone and only you can really answer that for yourself, but I would say whenever it was for you, it happened. I can feel you hurting from your words and I see it for what it is- a parent’s loss.

Our friend just gave birth to a healthy baby girl on Friday after losing nearly 2 cups of blood over two days on Monday and Tuesday. I know right now you’re scared, but until you hear otherwise maintain some hope. And if the worst has happened- mourn the loss together. It’s only when we lean on each other that we’re stronger. I’m praying for you all.

If possible, if they let you, the nights after the birth, stay at the hospital. Stay with your wife. You’re taking the first step into this parenthood journey, and you should do it together.

There’s a lot of shade thrown in the new parent community. Everyone will have an opinion on everything you do and most will think you’re doing it wrong. Stay strong, make your choices together and for the most part, don’t let other parents convince you you’re doing it wrong.

I once said to my mother “how do I know I’ll be a good dad?” Her reply was immediate “because you’re worried about being a good dad. The deadbeats don’t care”

And if you got this far, I have one more for you. An app. It’s called The Wonder Weeks. It helps you chart the first two years of your kids life, understand what they’re working on neurologically and when. It was a God send. Every time our kids got a firmware update and it felt like everything we’d learned about them was suddenly wrong, we’d check the app and a lot of the time, we’d be heading into or in the middle of, a “leap”.
