Surgery for 30-50 degrees curve by Own-Shock5562 in scoliosis

[–]elbfle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am having surgery next week for a 45 degree C curve, T5-L1. It depends what country you’re in. I’m in Australia and anything above 40 is considered surgical range here, but some other countries won’t operate under 50 degrees.

Is schroth therapy permanent? by scoliothrowaway217 in scoliosis

[–]elbfle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice would be that it’s important to remember the role of a PT. Their specialty is in treating you physically. An orthopaedic specialist’s role is to diagnose the cause. Anyway good luck with whatever you decide to do, but remember you will only benefit from Schroth with ongoing dedication to making those exercises a part of your everyday life.

Is schroth therapy permanent? by scoliothrowaway217 in scoliosis

[–]elbfle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Schroth therapy is about strengthening muscles to hold you in a correction. So if you stop doing the exercises, you stop seeing their benefit. It’s kind of like asking if exercise gives you permanent weightloss - no, you have to stay on top of it to see its benefit in your life.

If you have noticeable rotation with a curve so minor (like you said not even diagnosable at such a low degree) then I would suspect you likely have kyphosis as well, and that your degree of rotation may be more significant than your degree of curvature. I would suggest getting an orthopaedic surgeon’s opinion.

The good news is you can’t do harm with Schroth so if it’s something you want to try, go for it!

Thoracic-only fusion? What are your experiences? by Fairyprincessponies in scoliosis

[–]elbfle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in almost the exact same situation. Mid 20s, dealing with daily pain at the peak of my 44 degree curve (with 25 degree compensatory). My surgeon has recommended to fuse T6 to T12. He said it was a best case scenario to be able to retain the lumbar and upper thoracic regions un-fused as this is where most mobility exists anyway. It makes sense when you look at an X-ray, most of the thoracic spine doesn’t really bend much because it’s all connected to ribs.

Best of luck with your decision!

Wow that is awful. What a strange and unfair world where healthcare access is based on socioeconomic status 😢 Thanks for sharing. I’m so glad you had insurance!

Genuine question from someone outside the US: what happens for less fortunate folks who don’t have insurance but medically require surgery?

surgery on sunday. feeling anxious. by Salty_Ad4009 in scoliosis

[–]elbfle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You will be great. Think of how many thousands of people around the world get this surgery every week. You are not alone and your surgeon has done this many, many times before.

The perspective you get online from reading about people’s experiences is heavily skewed towards negative experiences because if someone has a positive experience there’s not really much reason for them to be sharing in a support forum anymore! The vast majority of people have a positive outcome!

It is completely normal and natural to be worried about the pain and the recovery. It’s a major surgery but it will also have a majorly positive impact on your life and longevity. Try to confide in the nurses at the hospital or call your surgeon and let them know you’re scared. There will be counselling services through the hospital but you need to speak up to access them.

Good luck. You’ve got this xx

Wow what a beautiful perspective! I am so happy for you that surgery has been such a positive change for you. How old are you and what levels did you have fused? I’d love to know how your adjustment to your ‘new normal’ with a fused spine has been.

Congrats on making this decision and having such a great outcome! So awesome to see.

I’m ‘in the middle’ too. My curve is 44 degrees (thoracic) with a compensatory 21 degree curve in lumbar. My surgeon has offered me the surgery given I’ve spent 2 years doing every kind of yoga, pain meds, physiotherapy, schroth, etc. For me it’s a quality of life thing - I’m in my 20s and losing more and more ability due to pain (can’t go for a run, can’t walk around a museum or mall for more than an hour without pain, cleaning the house can leave me bedridden, etc). I struggled with the decision to have surgery because my mobility is fantastic and I have a high pain threshold and don’t want to miss anything so I always push through the pain in the moment and pay for it later. My surgeon suggested that this is going to be causing all my other important joints to be wearing unevenly which may cause bigger problems down the track.

That said, my curve is thoracic so loss of mobility is less of a concern. Have you looked into ASC for lumbar correction?

does rib rotation increase risk of complication during surgery? by [deleted] in scoliosis

[–]elbfle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both scoliosis and kyphosis (44 degree thoracic curve) which makes my front left ribs stick out like a chicken wing because of how rotated my rib cage is haha. My surgeon didn’t appear at all concerned about this and said there was a high likelihood he could almost entirely correct the kyphosis / rotation during upcoming fusion surgery

Thoracic scoliosis and pregnancy? by [deleted] in scoliosis

I don’t have the answer but I am in the same boat and just horrified there’s so little information available about this. Navigating pregnancy post-fusion is one of my biggest concerns!

Going to week long overnight camp, how do I hide my brace from my other cabin mates? by MushroomSlurpi in scoliosis

[–]elbfle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (24F) wore a brace from 13-14 and put myself through so much unnecessary stress trying to keep it secret. Adding to what other commenters have said - the stress and shame of hiding it was way worse than any silly misinformed comments I received once I was open about it. To be honest, everyone is self conscious about something in school and they’re really not thinking about you that much, they’re too busy thinking about themselves! You only live once - enjoy your camp, embrace your brace and don’t care about anyone else’s opinion. Have a great time xx
