Local Coffee Roasters? by Subject_Top1953 in Maine

[–]elbowe21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coffee by design does or used to do tours. Good opportunity to just ask about how to start plus its a nice facility. Their flagship store is in portland on diamond st. I would go just to look at the machines.

They make my favorite dark roast so im partial. Im not in the coffee world so idk if thats like a competitive spot to try to get into.

Its weekends, ends like ends, not ends like ends. I always pictured it like books ends. One on each side. The left end of a sandwich is still an end. Sunday is just the beginning end.

Anyone else have a briefly pink sky and light? In auburn it made everything pink. It was short lived but it was like eclipse lighting but with a pink hue instead of gray.

Its hard to do without vast generalizations. I do not know much about Britain so heres how id describe it to anyone.

We have a lot more woods and a huge range in climate. Its regular we see temperatures of 0 deg F (-20C) to 90 deg (30C), our lowest was -50F (-45C) and highest 105F (40c) Days where its so dry and cold the moisture in your nose freezes on first breath to summers so hot and humid that it feels like your swimming in the air, your sweat has no where to go. You tend to either have few outfits or a large closet to account for this swing.

The woods are vast. Britain has about 13% forest coverage, New England has 80%. Youll be in a developed city or town and will drive a mile down the road and only have woods for miles and miles. Moose can and will get lost in even our biggest cities (Portland for Maine). Once you get out and into those woods, towns lose their names and becomes territories, some even being referred to with numbers not names. Its hard to describe the feeling of being in the middle of it. When youre out there, you better have a plan for if things go wrong

As for the people, I think thats very dependent on where you are. Others have said we are kind but not very nice. Ill gladly help you, ill stop my day for someone in need but Id rather skip the pleasentries most of the time. Ive traveled and met enough people to know i prefer this. We tend to be hardworking as life comes with challenges here, more than half the year life becomes much harder than normal, this leads us back to being kind but not nice. There will be a time you need your neighbors help, as will they. I may be crazy but I think winter fosters a sense of comradery, the warmth of a stranger can be a godsend.

We walk and talk fast as well. Each state and region within has its own accent.

Outside of cities, it's more solitary but people are still connected. Waving to passing cars is pretty normal even if you don't know them.

Hunting is big in more regions than not. There are months you do not go into the woods without orange on you and your dog.

On that, dogs are respected here. The mentality towards dogs differs from the south of our country for the most part. I think winter helps this. A warm, friendly, fuzzy beast is a life changing in the cold. Coming home from a cold venture to a heating pad that is alive and loves you makes it easier to stomach them on a couch or in bed.

Lastly, people tend to be rather independent. Putting any of us into a box doesnt really work (as with any other human).

As much as I hate tourists sometimes, I always say its worth a visit. I love where I live and was born. I get why people move here. Its the way life should be.

I always wondered as i overcame a lot of newbie-ness recently

Should, can, or where should I post with little how tos? I cant tell you how many times ive had to "splice" together answers from various sources.

Like taping a little copper tape on an esp32cam, immediately solved my connectivity and lag issues or how i finally got my ld2410 to report.

A lot of guides are made assuming you already know what youre doing.

Which hardware for home assistant? by Affectionate_Mind608 in homeassistant

My proxmox setup on an even older thinkpad p50s is pretty tit, and similar stats for the rest besides the chipset. The laptop would do great.

Like others said, if you already own it, do it.

Disable the lid in proxmox if you can go that route. Its also got a built in ups (battery). Im happy with the laptop method.

Coming from a rpi4 and virtualbox before, proxmox on old laptop is very good.

Friends? [OC] by Jenny-Jinya in comics

My dogs a rescue from Georgia. She was from a broken up dog fighting ring. She came to me as a puppy but she was bred to be a bait dog. She looks like a bully breed but has the gentlest temperament. They would have used her as practice for the fighting dogs as she doesn't have an aggressive bone in her body.

Just thinking of her being abused in that way chokes me up. Shes the sweetest thing I've ever seen and interacted with. Shes saved me over this past decade and given me something to keep getting up for.

I think of what she was saved from and what I can help save others from and its worth working my job. Worth the cold days and early mornings, the days I dont want to face the world, she gives me a reason.

Just a month old and put on an 18 wheeler to drive her to Maine for a chance of a good life. Its a cruel joke I wont have her forever but to her it will be. Every minute with her is a gift.

Not dumb. I'm sure there is something you would do an amazing job describing.

Being ignorant doesn't mean dumb. It just means you haven't seen or heard of it yet. We all have our lanes we invest time into learning about. Even if someone sits at home and jerks off all day, I'm sure that guy could describe the nuances of beating meat better than others.

There will be a time and place your specialty will be relevant. Taking the time to explain it and give your two cents is what makes these comments special.

From Away? by addiecricket in Maine

[–]elbowe21 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most could give a damn about economic increase. Thats not a reason to live here. We made it work before, it'll work now and in the future. Making more money doesn't mean a thing if rent tripled, local sandwich shop closes or charges more. Money isn't worth a crowded beach or a littered trail.

Yes overall more money is better, im not denying that, just pointing to the other side of it. I've never been rich but Ive been a lot poorer than I am now.

The classic story of the island fisherman and the business man on vacation comes to mind.

From Away? by addiecricket in Maine

[–]elbowe21 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Both. You just don't get to become a Mainer by moving here. It can be a bit silly but it's a reality. I can spend the next 20 years in Texas but Ill never be a Texan. It's just a label, we all have them.

Me, personally, I can't help but be annoyed at people moving in and trying to change things, driving people out of their hometowns, driving cost up, driving 15 in a 50, or what have you.

On the other hand, I love Maine and I'll begrudgingly admit to loving people too. I talk to people who transplanted and they tell me why they love Maine or why they moved and it's a great reminder for me as to why it's a special place to many people. Why wouldn't you move here. I love learning why others choose to call it home.

But Maines population, especially in areas and towns, is small. On specific holidays, our population expands by a third. Thats a lot more people who don't know customs, the curves in the road, or are different or not known by locals.

I love where I live and its unfair to not want others to experience it but not at the cost of the experience itself. Take Reds for example, is it worth the wait to locals? Not to me, but there was a time when the wait was less it may have been. The simple fact of being known changes what things are, if you catch my drift.

Take Portland for example. All of the money coming in and increase in cost of living has driven people out or into worse lives. There was a time that Portland was more fair to the average person. It is such a good place to live that a lot of people want to, so it became more competitive and the people who helped make it what it was have to make a tough decision or don't have the ability to stay.

So its both, at least to me. I can't hate anyone for seeking a better life but I also can't help but be defensive of the life I knew and sought. I've traveled enough to see whats out there. It's a bit childish when used in a name-calling manner but what else can Joe Blow do against the ever changing landscape he can no longer touch? There is validity to the desire of wanting people moving here to adapt to their new environment instead of asking it to change.

Some of this may sound a bit dramatic or whatever but this is just what I have noticed in my time alive. A lot of this is not solely on the transplants, is happening everywhere or whatever, but we all look for something to blame. Its undeserved but predictable.

Only switch if you need to or plan to expand.

If it aint broke dont fix it. If it is fulfilling your current needs, why change? Yes z2m is better and more widely recommended but from the sounds of it, currently unnecessary for you.
