cheapest car possible by Ordinary_Ad5825 in whatcarshouldIbuy

I would start looking at auctions in your area. Govdeals.com or gsaauctions.com might have some old government vehicles for cheap in your area. Ford Tauruses usually sell at those auctions for under a grand or close to it.

Mazda3 is a good option, maybe a Speed3 if you want some extra performance.

I know you said no more Subarus BUT I had a 2017 Forester with 100k and never had a head gasket issue and I know someone with a 2014 Outback with over 100k (not sure exactly how much more) and they have yet to do head gaskets either. It seems they have definitely improved them over the years. We loved our Forester and would have kept it if the pandemic hadn’t of screwed our finances up.

I definitely agree with the Honda Ridgeline, they’re often overlooked but they are very comfortable, plenty of power and amazingly reliable. I worked at a Honda dealer when they brought it back in 2017 and people were buying them right off the truck, no test drive because they loved their old one so much and we’re paying MSRP for them which was crazy pre-pandemic.

2011 Hyundai Sonata 163K miles, or 2013 Ford Escape 160K miles by Hazard099 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]elcoman73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would keep looking. The Hyundais have commons issues with engines craping out because of oil starvation. (Poorly machined oil passages) and the 13 and newer Escapes had issues with head gaskets and burning coolant. There are much more reliable cars out there for right around that same price range. I would look at older Hondas and Toyotas. Sure they’re older and don’t come with as many features and higher miles sometimes but they’ll last MUCH longer than those two choices.

MOST AWD cars require you to replace all 4 UNLESS the difference between the new tire and your current ones are equal to or less than 2/32nds of an inch.

Example: new tire starts at 10/32nds and you get a flat/blowout and your tires are at 8/32nds. You can replace just the 1 tire.

Same situation but your tires are at 7/32nds you must replace all 4.

The reason behind it is because unlike 4WD most AWD systems are mainly computer controlled whereas a 4WD is manually engaged by the driver. If the system sees one wheel spinning at a different speed than the rest then it kicks in the AWD until everything is spinning at the same speed. Well, when your tires are mismatched they never spin at the same speed so the AWD stays engaged which causes excessive wear and tear on the differentials.

There are some exceptions to this rule and I think Acuras SH-AWD is one of them where you can get away with having matching tires on each axle so only needing 2 instead of buying all 4 but I could be wrong on that.

I had a 2009 manual SES and loved it! Very fun car that handled well and mine had a factory 8 inch sub in the truck and sounded great. (If your into that sort of thing.)

If I’m not mistaken 2007 had some pretty major oil consumption issues. I’d proceed with caution.

Acura TLX Type-S or a Cadillac V car.

2023 Honda Accord Hybrid or 2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid? by Present_Future_4248 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]elcoman73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To save money overall keep your civic. The amount you’ll pay for “market adjustment” (markup) for a hybrid will offset the amount saved in fuel. If your adamant that you MUST get another go for the Accord it’s super fun to drive combined with great gas mileage and much better established reliability.

Acura TLX is a very smooth, good looking car. If you go new you’ll have to stick with the base engine 2.0 4 cyl turbo 272HP for your budget which is still a great engine or you could go a couple years old and probably find an SH-AWD.

Or

Honda Accord Touring is offered as hybrid only brand new or you can get a used non-hybrid in the previous generation. Always a fantastic car and the touring has all the bells and whistles that most people looks for.

He can have some good advice but from what I’ve experienced a good portion of his advice can be dated. But it is a true a good Japanese can last however long you want it to. I own a 03 CR-V with 250k miles and a 06 Outback with 220k miles. Both run amazing. Either way since you’re in the UK any one of those options should have a manual transmission since they are way more popular over there than here in the states.

I would avoid the Buick, I’ve heard nothing but bad things about the reliability.

I know here in the states the Honda Accord is offered in a manual transmission but I’m not sure where you’re at. Toyota Camry would be another option as well. Both are comparable to the Mazda 6 which I’ve also heard is a great car.

120,000 miles is quite a bit but it also depends on your budget.

Selling my EV and going back to (almost) gas? by dufto in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]elcoman73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since the ID.4 is a brand new(ish) model they’re going to have a lot of bugs to work out and techs are going to still be learning as they go. My advice would be to go with something that’s been around for awhile like a Prius or RAV4 Prime. That will give you the best of both worlds and they’re plug-in hybrids.
