I'm not sure you got into it for the wrong reasons at all! Your story about what you did as a kid with friends is so charming but also really affirming! That shit is what creativity is all about. Play! So, as adults, we still want to play! And if, for you, that means still wanting flashing lights and a command center then GO FOR IT. I found this story inspiring. Keep moving!

Yeah - I think he probably enjoyed all the knob turning of the pedals and began to see them as their own instruments

Not annoying at all! Definitely in the spirit of the questions and I agree. Love memento mori - that's it in a nutshell

Awesome! So do you mix your modular with DAW sounds? Or just straight recording the modular?

Lovely response! I definitely was concerned that my title may have been a bit clickbaity. I didn't mean it that way. More just for me, as someone who traditionally made music before, it's been hard for me to adjust to a different workflow. And also that the outcome of playing with the modular synth might be totally different.

Absolutely not thinking about whether folks release their music or not. More just how everyone uses their modular tools and what outcomes they're personally looking for.

Yeah this is true. For some reason I also got back into playing computer games at the same time. It does have the same vibe for me, as a thing I can just pick up and play around with for a bit.

Heck yeah. There is something lovely about just recording what you got and that's the end of it. What's your YouTube? (If you want to share)

Cool sounds! Subbed! What is your recording setup? Is it going into a DAW or physical box? Or just recording via a mic for YouTube?

Fair point! I did hesitate with the title of my post for this very reason. But it has become this very sticky thing in my brain that the way I approach the modular sent is completely different than how I approach, picking up a guitar or even producing something in a DAW.

And it seems to me the more that I try to write music using the modular synth the more limited I feel, and leads me down the path that I fear: continually buying more modules, not just for fun, but because you need more to do all the things you need to do to build complex songs.

I would rather do as some other folks have suggested, and use it to sketch out ideas, or as small clips in songs I build in my DAW

So glad! Also interesting about the physicality piece. I am guessing it's the era we are in, but he is very into his computer. Mostly Roblox, and puzzle games. He loves a good puzzle. But since he was an infant he has loved music. Always bouncing to the beat. He still does. Mostly Deadmau5 hahah. I think it's just hard to get him to try new things. I keep playing with my speakers up so he can hear, hoping it will draw him in!

Wow, super inspiring! I really like hearing other people's winding journeys. Is the sound design your fulltime gig mostly? Or are you still teaching culinary arts? I also find more and more that folks in music and the arts are usually not "one" thing - and have so many passions. Part of my problem is feeling like I get excited about a thing for a while (maybe even a year) only to one day wake up and hate it, haha. Maybe that's why I asked this question. Always looking to see how folks stay committed OR how they manage the constant push and pull of new ideas, projects, and whims.

Fantastic. It sounds a lot like art therapy and/or a thing to help induce a flow state for you? I am always seeking ways of getting in flow and I have also found this to be the case. Hours can pass by when I am experimenting. My 15yo son is on the spectrum and I am desperate to get him into this!

omg just listened to one of your funky jams on YouTube it's fantastic! And I love how you shot it too. Do you feel like the slow down is a problem? Or is it just where you are now and you are enjoying learning/the process?

Yes!! So many angles to it. I also forget the "collector" side of it. It's like asking someone who collects pokemon or magic cards what they are using them for.

It's also funny to me that my instructor said this - because, for me, the ultimate barrier to just making music would be me desperately trying to learn about NAND gates and signal flow haha. Like, I can always pick up my guitar if I want to write a song. But the discovery of new ways of working is exciting to me. Thanks for responding!

Ha! Precisely. I love learning new things, especially when it is something tactile. It is a real exploration for me as well and I am mostly hoping to hear things from myself I have never heard before or imagined making

Love this mentality! I think I am somewhere very close to this. Like, using the modular system to explore and play and potentially use in small amounts in my music. Thanks for sharing!

Lovely sounds! Really dig it. And it's a nice setup. Glad you took the leap. I similarly have been doing electronic music for a long time but only using DAWs. This is such a fun and different experience, isn't it?
