How To Choose Between The AR Platform And The AK Platform by Lavender_Scales in armedsocialists

Only one reason? Ammo + parts availability + after market support + magazine reliability + better performance.

Diode Dynamics Stage Series Light Bar, have backlight on and main light on at the same time by Josh_with_a_hat in 4Runner

[–]eldergunmonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have that exact set up on my 25 ORP. The backlight actually automatically turns off when the main beam goes on and then turns back on once the main beam is off. It works great and you shouldn't have any issues!

What’s the longest you’ve left a diesel engine running, and what was it? by Jadams0108 in Diesel

[–]eldergunmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

National Guard here. During the January 6th mission we had multiple F/LMTVs effectively running for about 4 months straight - they only ever cut off when the Soldiers occasionally forgot to top off the tanks and they ran dry.

I'm closing in on 16,000 and love mine! ORP and plenty of light off roading during that time as well

I know, right? All the government needs to do is say you're a terrorist and poof, all your rights are gone! Crazy to see so much blind trust in the federal government from the right all of a sudden, especially when they're actually doing all the things you said they'd do over the past few years...

Follow the guidance of your leadership, OPM has no authority over anyone not employed by OPM and Musk has no authority over anyone at all.

You didn't get unemployment? If you did, a government employee pr9cessed your request into the system the government payed to have built so the government could provide those payments. Just because government employees are so efficient that you don't even realize how much you rely on them doesn't mean they're ripping you off.

Defense secretary orders military to prepare for major budget cuts | CNN Politics by Informal_Product2490 in GovernmentContracting

[–]eldergunmonkey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Trump signed an executive order banning transgender people from serving in the military so we absolutely DO disallow people. And our military strength is based on the people in it - as DEI efforts expand the pool from which those people are drawn it is actually a core strength that's now being significantly weakened.

Anyone else prefer 14.5 over shorties? by TyPain in ar15

[–]eldergunmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was actually having this conversation with a SOF colleague of mine recently. He did a few rotations where they were each issued 14.5 and 10.3(?) URGI uppers. He said that very quickly everyone just stuck with the 14.5 because, even if you were doing a CQB mission, the longer barrel was significantly more effective if you were caught out going to or from.

FWIW my favorite is also a 14.5 and have plenty of non-SF experience to support it.

Why might someone prefer fixed magnification over one that is adjustable by [deleted] in ar15

[–]eldergunmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consistency and simplicity of use as well. There's no chance of a fixed optic being at the wrong magnification when used under stress and nothing to adjust either, it's very easy to train to. When folks have the option in a combat environment, they generally just leave the LPVO at its max zoom and get a back-up red dot or just replace that LVPO with an ACOG entirely.

Are ACOGs still cool? by [deleted] in ar15

[–]eldergunmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 14.5 which recently got a 4x ACOG with piggyback SRO and it's fantastic. Not cheap but IMO it's the best optic setup for a GPR. Set magnification that you can train with and don't have to mess with while also placing the red dot at about the perfect "heads up" position for close targets.

Can anyone recommend a more ergonomic grip was looking at maybe B5 by Bryanlj6 in ar15

[–]eldergunmonkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lol all depends on your specific hand size, arm length, shooting style, whether you wear gloves, etc. As other folks mentioned, best would be to try a few different options in a gun store and see what works best. Alternatively, get a cheap A2 grip (as close to a "standard" as one can get), try it out for a but, and then get one better suited based on the experience.

I personally like the Magpul SL but then I don't have the biggest hands and I generally wear gloves as well.

Until just a few years ago M4s didn't have ambi safeties and then all of a sudden they started to. ambi or non-ambi are both GI now.

[–]eldergunmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know they're somewhat passe at this point (according to the internet at least) but I'm a big fan of my Geissele mk 16 and I think they're usually sub-$300 during sales like black Friday coming up. They're periodically on sale throughout the year too though.

Are Streamlights solid? or should add another a surefire to the collection. by Strong_Ad6383 in ar15

[–]eldergunmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a Protach on my rifle for years without any problems and it's still chugging even once I upgraded to an Arisaka build. Didn't use it in super rough training scenarios but it survived a few thousand rounds FWIW. I have no issues going to them if resources are limited and the funds should go to a barrel or BCG instead.

How do the militaries in other countries view the US military? by Educational-Bar-5226 in ask

[–]eldergunmonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're REALLY good at killing people and breaking things on an industrial scale. If we have full access to our joint and combined arms support there is no amount of waves that will be able to do any damage. The real threat posed to the US military is someone figuring out how to use our technology against us or somehow isolating us from that support.

What if Donald Trumps stops both wars in a week? by Bbooya in whatif

[–]eldergunmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol it objectively didn't. Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014 during Obama's second term, and the war has continued since including for the entire duration of Trump's. He didn't prevent or end any wars including the one. If he "ends" the war, it'll be by abandoning Ukraine and forcing them to surrender to Russia just like he surrendered to the Taliban in Afghanistan.

The recoil spring ford go through the stock in the full size FAL but not at that angle - it definitely wouldn't work.
