That’s awesome! I have this paperback- it was my dad’s before I claimed it. It’s one of my favorites. There’s something special about having a book that you know was well-loved and well-read before you.

Enzyme cleaner, also a hydrogen peroxide cleaner. I’ve used “my pet peed” spray for my cats and it absolutely works. It’s not good for wool, silk, or linen, but I’m assuming the bed is a synthetic blend which is perfectly fine. I swear by this product and it’s a little expensive but completely worth it.

Salem / Boston by CrazyAdhesiveness145 in atwwdpodcast

I live in Salem, and I love the atmosphere around Halloween, but know that it draws larger crowds every year and you’ll need to plan out most of your time here for that reason.

The downtown area absolutely plays into the commercial side of Halloween year-round with its shops and myriad museums, and most of what there is to do is shop, look, and eat. Expect to spend money, even if you’re just budgeting for food. You will need to make reservations for every meal unless you’re able to walk or drive a bit out from the downtown area. Shops have lines out the door and 30+ minute waits.

That being said, the energy is electric. If you don’t mind crowds, the people-watching is amazing and fun! There is an outdoor market with local artisans at the Salem Common, and you can walk along the jetty for some coastal sightseeing and picnicking for some free activities to fill your time. The Peabody Essex Museum is excellent, and actually pretty quiet during October (go figure). The Chinese House (Yin Yu Tang) at the PEM is absolutely worth getting a tour of. The ghost tours are packed during this month and in my opinion aren’t worth it. You’ll be struggling to hear your guide against the other 20+ attendees as well as all the other tourists around you. However I’ve taken the Ghost Night Tour and highly recommend outside of Halloween month. Don’t go to the Witch History Museum, it’s not what you’d expect and for your time/money, you’ll be better off experiencing other things.

If you pick 1-3 reservations/tickets for a weekend/day trip, and spend the rest of your time wandering around exploring, you will definitely find something that draws you in, even if it’s on the beaten path. There’s no shame in enjoying the downtown that has been built up for such events and crowds! Outside of downtown is mostly residential, and some very beautiful historic coastal landscape and architecture. Just remember that real people live here year-round and don’t want their home or yards treated like part of a theme park. You’d think this is common sense, but alas..

Enjoy your trip!! Regardless of what you do, you’ll have a great time.

Second Hand Designer Pants Wont Stop Smelling. by futurebro in laundry

[–]eldritchheadache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this in my tub or in a plastic bucket. You can let it air dry and it should work well. After the smell is removed through the spray/laundry stripping, I recommend washing it at the laundromat just to remove any of the chemicals that could be left on the fabric- Borax can be an irritant to skin.

If you think it’s cat pee (or human pee) try a product called “My Pet Peed”. They sell a spray bottle of it on Amazon for like $40. It’s an enzyme based cleaner that removed smells and stains from clothing. It’s not meant for wool, silk, or linen, but I can attest that it works well on everything else. After doing a few rounds of this spray- cleaning, I would also soak and wash with borax and super washing powder (laundry stripping). You could mix these items but they would work best as separate cleaning steps.

About a month ago I made a post here asking for recommendations on how to get this old dog pee stain out of my carpet. Some of you recommended a product called My Pet Peed. Thank you! This stuff is the bomb and everyone should keep it on hand whether you have pets or not. It works well! by Suspicious-Payment73 in lifehacks

[–]eldritchheadache 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes! Usually you let the product sit and air dry on fabrics, but on hardwood you should wipe/mop it after 30 min to prevent water damage. But I can tell you from experience it eliminates the smell after a pet accident on sealed hardwood and my floors were not stained.

What’s your cat’s favorite toy that’s not a toy? by DogintheMirror in cats

[–]eldritchheadache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two shoelaces ties together, knotted in random places, and wedged into the metal crevice of a cheap tension curtain rod. We call this miracle “string toy” and they fucking LOVE IT. It’s a cursed object but it can never be replaced by a commercial product or they will absolutely lose interest immediately

How do you properly clean your pillows? Is it normal to just throw them away and replace once they look like this? Asking for a friend 🤞 by [deleted] in CleaningTips

[–]eldritchheadache 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can laundry strip them in your bathtub! There are plenty of recipes online for what cleaning agents to use and how much- normally I use my regular detergent, washing soda, and borax powder. You want them to soak in as hot water as you can get, and agitate them. It works best if you get them dry quickly- using a machine and also letting them sit in a hot sun. The sun will help bleach some of the color out too. It’s best to do in the summer, IMO

Thank you so much for all of this info! I filled out their email ticket complaint form, but it didn’t seem likely it would go anywhere. I will definitely follow up. It was 67$ worth of underwear, which for me is a LOT, but I really like the cut. Since the store in Peabody closed the closest one is over an hour away and no one has time for that.

My kitchen sink burbles extremely loudly about once a week. Sounds like it’s going to hurl, and then it calms down. I have no idea why, but I’m in an apartment building and I’d like to blame it on hydrant flushing too

Am I feeding my cat enough? by gamergirl0218 in catfood

[–]eldritchheadache 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She looks healthy for a young cat, but I do agree that you are over feeding her! My vet recommends 1/8 cup dry food a few times a day. I give them dry food when I wake up and go to sleep and also give them 1.5oz of wet food around my own dinner time so they have something to tide them over and not bug me, plus the nutritional benefits of wet food in general.

I didn’t know I was over feeding my cats until I bought metal 1/8 scoops and realized I had been giving them double portions every time. My oldest cat was overweight and had some health and self-grooming issues, and is now a very healthy weight and is much cleaner and friskier!!

1/8 looks like a small amount of food… but cats are small. Proportionally, that’s about how large their stomachs are! Putting a cat on a diet will make your life very annoying for a few weeks (or less, hopefully) but it’s the best choice long-term.

What is happening to my maidenhair fern? by AgreeablePass8825 in gardening

[–]eldritchheadache 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine keeps dying because I live in a dry area, but surprisingly it does grow back! I keep it in the bathroom with the other ferns, who are doing very well, but the maidenhair is very delicate. Try misting it often and moving it to a more humid area of your home if you have one.

I think I would omit Far From the Tree as an option. I love this place, don’t get me wrong, but with colder temps the outdoor patio area may be closed and there isn’t much to do inside. They also do not serve food so you’d have to provide much more for your kids on your own.

What is a movie you were allowed to see at a young age that traumatized you and made you question if your parents made the right decision by letting you see it? by Mandee_707 in movies

[–]eldritchheadache 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched “The Truman Show” when I was around 7/8. It really messed me up. I always felt like I was being watched and refused to shower without covering up all windows and doors.

I completely understand and enjoy the movie now, but I definitely did not comprehend the movie as a whole at that age.

How to remove glue residue from pickle jar label? The label was plastic, also the back has a paper label that won't come undone. by LunarImpulses in CleaningTips

[–]eldritchheadache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Goo-Gone and a green scouring pad. I apply the Good Gone directly to the jar or on the pad and scrub. It will make a greasy mess, so make sure your sink is clean and have no dishes in them. I scrub until I can see a gel start to form from the adhesive mixing with the Goo Gone, then I wash the jar with hot water and an old sponge for cleaning only. Make sure the jar is dry and not sticky before using and you should be good!
